Wireless local area network (WLAN)Some places, like France, have restrictions on the use ofwireless LAN. Check with your local authorities for moreinformation. This device can detect and connect to a wireless localarea network (WLAN). To use wireless LAN, a networkmust be available in the location and your device mustbe connected to it.See wireless LANavailabilityYour device can show you whether wireless LAN isavailable. To have your device show wireless LAN availability, select Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > WirelessLAN > Show availability. If wireless LAN is available, is shown on the display.Tip: You can also scan for networks in range.Wireless LAN connectionsImportant: Always enable one of the availableencryption methods to increase the security of yourwireless LAN connection. Using encryption reduces therisk of unauthorized access to your data.To use wireless LAN, you must create an internet accesspoint (IAP) in a wireless LAN. Use the access point forapplications that need to connect to the internet. Awireless LAN connection is established when you createa data connection using a wireless LAN Internet accesspoint. The active wireless LAN connection is endedwhen you end the data connection. You can also endthe connection manually. See "Connectionmanager," p. 57.You can use wireless LAN during a voice call or whenpacket data is active. You can only be connected to onewireless LAN access point device at a time, but severalapplications can use the same internet access point. When the device is in the Offline profile, you can still usewireless LAN (if available). Remember to comply withany applicable safety requirements when establishingand using a wireless LAN connection. If you move the device to another location within thewireless LAN and out of range of a wireless LAN accesspoint, the roaming functionality can automaticallyconnect your device to another access point thatbelongs to the same network. As long as you remainwithin range of access points that belong to the samenetwork, your device can stay connected to thenetwork.Tip: To check the unique media access control(MAC) address that identifies your device, forexample to configure the MAC address of yourdevice to a WLAN router, enter *#62209526#59Wireless local area network (WLAN)file:///C:/USERS/MODEServer/lkatajis/13055716/rm-227_slender/en/issue_1/rm-227_slender_en-US_1.xml Page 59 Dec 20, 2006 9:03:12 AM

The two operating modes areinfrastructure and ad hoc.•The infrastructure operating mode allows two kindsof communication: wireless devices communicatewith each other through a wireless LAN access pointor wireless devices communicate with a wired LANdevice through a wireless LAN access point. Theadvantage of the infrastructure operating mode isthat you can have more control over networkconnections because they pass through an accesspoint. A wireless device can access the services thatare available in a regular wired LAN: companydatabase, e-mail, the Internet, and other networkresources, for example.•In the ad hoc operating mode you can send data toand receive it from other devices with compatiblewireless LAN support , for example, to be printed. These functions may require an additional thirdparty application to work. No wireless LAN accesspoint is required. Simply make the necessaryconfigurations and start communicating. Ad hocnetworking is easy to set up, but communication islimited to devices that are within range and supportcompatible wireless LAN technology.WLAN wizardThe WLAN wizard helps you to connect to a wirelessLAN.The WLAN wizard shows the status of your wireless LANconnections and network searches in the activestandby mode. Theexistence of a certificate does not offer any protectionby itself; the certificate manager must contain correct, authentic, or trusted certificates for increased securityto be available. Certificates have a restricted lifetime. If"Expired certificate" or "Certificate not valid yet" isshown even if the certificate should be valid, check thatthe current date and time in your device are correct. Before changing any certificate settings, you mustmake sure that you really trust the owner of thecertificate and that the certificate really belongs to thelisted owner.Digital certificates are used to verify the origins ofsoftware but do not guarantee safety. There are threedifferent types of certificates: authority certificates, personal certificates, and server certificates. During asecure connection, a server may send a servercertificate to your device. Upon receipt, it is checkedthrough an authority certificate stored on your device. You receive notification if the identity of the server isnot authentic or if you do not have the correctcertificate in your device.Download a certificate from a web site, or receive acertificate as an e-mail attachment, or as a messagesent through a Bluetooth or infrared connection.Certificates should be used when you connect to anonline bank or a remote server to transfer confidentialinformation. They should also be used if you want toreduce the risk of viruses or other malicious software, and to check the authenticity of software when youdownload and install software to your device.Tip: When you add a new certificate, check itsauthenticity.92Securityfile:///C:/USERS/MODEServer/lkatajis/13055716/rm-227_slender/en/issue_1/rm-227_slender_en-US_1.xml Page 92 Dec 20, 2006 9:03:12 AMfile:///C:/USERS/MODEServer/lkatajis/13055716/rm-227_slender/en/issue_1/rm-227_slender_en-US_1.xml Page 92 Dec 20, 2006 9:03:12 AM

The SAR limit stated in the ICNIRPguidelines is 2.0 watts/kilogram (W/kg) averaged over10 grams of tissue. Tests for SAR are conducted usingstandard operating positions with the devicetransmitting at its highest certified power level in alltested frequency bands. The actual SAR level of anoperating device can be below the maximum valuebecause the device is designed to use only the powerrequired to reach the network. That amount changesdepending on a number of factors such as how closeyou are to a network base station. The highest SAR valueunder the ICNIRP guidelines for use of the device at theear is 0.57 W/kg.Use of device accessories and enhancements may resultin different SAR values. SAR values may vary dependingon national reporting and testing requirements and thenetwork band.
