Insert the SIM cardinto the card holder.Ensure that thebevelled corner on thecard is facing towardthe slot, and that thecontact area on thecard is facing down.15Get started
3. Insert the battery.4. To replace the cover,direct the top lockingcatch toward its slotfirst and then pressdown until the coverlocks into place.Switch the device on1. Press and hold the power key.2. If the device asks for a PIN codeor lock code, enter it, and pressthe left selection key. Thefactory setting for the lockcode is 12345.Your device has internalantennas.Note: Your device may haveinternal and external antennas. As with any radiotransmitting device, avoid touching the antennaunnecessarily when the antenna is in use. Contactwith such an antenna affects the communicationquality, may cause the device to operate at a higherpower level than otherwise needed and may reducethe battery life.1 — Bluetooth and wireless LAN antenna, and GPSreceiver2 — FM transmitter antenna3 — Cellular antennaNote: The Bluetooth, WLAN, GPS, and FM transmitterantennas are in the back cover of your device. Charge the battery1. Connect a compatiblecharger to a walloutlet.2. Connect the powercord to the device. Ifthe battery iscompletelydischarged, it maytake a while before the charging indicator startsscrolling.3. When the battery is fully charged, the chargingindicator stops scrolling. Disconnect the chargerfrom the device, then from the wall outlet.Tip: Disconnect the charger from the walloutlet when the charger is not in use. Acharger that is connected to the outletconsumes power even when it is notconnected to the device.Wrist strap1. Remove the back cover.2. Thread a strap as shown andtighten it.3. Audio themesIn Audio themes, you can select a sound schemesuch as 'Space' to cover all device events, such ascalling, battery low, and mechanical events. Thesounds can be tones, synthesised voice tags, or acombination of both.Select the sound scheme you want to use in Activeaudio theme. Note that activating an audio themechanges all your previous sound settings. If youwant to return to using the default tones, selectaudio theme 'Nokia'.You can change the sounds for different eventsindividually by selecting one of the sound groups,for example, Menu events.To add 3-D effects to the audio theme, selectOptions > 3-D ringing tones. Positioning (GPS)You can use applications such as Maps and GPS datato find out your location, or measure distances andcoordinates. These applications require a GPSconnection.About GPSThe Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwideradio navigation system that includes 24 satellitesand their ground stations that monitor theoperation of the satellites. Your device has aninternal GPS receiver.A GPS terminal receives low-power radio signalsfrom the satellites and measures the travel time ofthe signals. From the travel time, the GPS receivercan calculate its location to the accuracy of metres.The coordinates in the GPS are expressed in degreesand decimal degrees format using the internationalWGS-84 coordinate system.The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated bythe government of the United States, which is solelyresponsible for its accuracy and maintenance. Theaccuracy of location data can be affected byadjustments to GPS satellites made by the UnitedStates government and is subject to change withthe United States Department of Defense civil GPSpolicy and the Federal Radionavigation Plan.Accuracy can also be affected by poor satellitegeometry. When you receive a position request, a message isdisplayed showing the service that is making therequest. Youcan sort the saved locations into differentcategories, such as business, and add otherinformation to them, such as addresses. To use GPS data, the GPS receiver of your devicemust initially receive position information from atleast four satellites to calculate the coordinates ofyour location. When the initial calculation has beenmade, it may be possible to continue calculating thecoordinates of your location with three satellites.However, the accuracy is generally better whenmore satellites are found.Route guidancePress , and select Tools > Connectivity > GPSdata > Navigation.Start the route guidance outdoors. If startedindoors, the GPS receiver may not receive thenecessary information from the satellites.Route guidance uses a rotating compass on thedevice display. A red ball shows the direction to thedestination, and the approximate distance to it isshown inside the compass ring.Route guidance is designed to show the straightestroute and the shortest distance to the destination,measured in a straight line. Any obstacles on theroute, such as buildings and natural obstacles, areignored. Differences in altitude are not taken intoaccount when calculating the distance. Routeguidance is active only when you move.To set your trip destination, select Options > Setdestination and a landmark as the destination, orenter the latitude and longitude coordinates. SelectStop navigation to clear the destination set foryour trip.Retrieve position informationPress , and select Tools > Connectivity > GPSdata > Position.In the position view, you can view the positioninformation of your current location. An estimate ofthe accuracy of the location is displayed.To save your current location as a landmark, selectOptions > Save position. MapsAbout MapsPress , and select Maps.With Maps, you can see your current location on themap, browse maps for different cities and countries,search for addresses and different points of interest,plan routes from one location to another, and savelocations as landmarks and send them tocompatible devices.You can also purchase extra services, such as guidesand a turn-by-turn navigation service with voiceguidance.Tip: You can try out the turn-by-turnnavigation service for three days using freelicence. If no position was saved from the lastsession, the Maps application zooms in to thecapital city of the country you are in based on theinformation the device receives from the cellularnetwork. This option is available only when acompatible memory card is inserted. When thememory is full, the oldest map data is deleted. You can also use it todownload voice files for turn-by-turn navigation.To use Nokia Map Loader, you must first install it toa compatible PC. You can download the PC softwarefrom the internet at www.nokia.com/maps. Followthe instructions on the screen.You must use the Maps application and browsemaps at least once before using Nokia Map Loader.Nokia Map Loader uses the Maps historyinformation to check the version of map data to bedownloaded.After you have installed the PC software to your PC,to download maps, do the following:1. Connect your device to the PC by using acompatible USB data cable. Select Massstorage as the USB connection mode.2. Open Nokia Map Loader in your PC. CameraAbout the cameraYour Nokia N78 has two cameras. The main, highresolution camera (up to 3.2 megapixels), is on theback of the device. The secondary, lower resolution,camera is on the front. You can use both cameras totake still pictures and record videos.Your device supports an image capture resolutionof 2048x1536 pixels. The image resolution in thisguide may appear different.The images and video clips are automatically savedin the Photos application. See "Photos", p. 75. Thecameras produce .jpeg images. Changing the source, amount, and direction of lightcan change photographs dramatically. Here aresome typical lighting conditions:●Light source behind the subject. Avoid placingyour subject in front of a strong light source. Ifthe light source is behind the subject or visible inthe display, the resulting picture may have weakcontrast, may be too dark, and may containunwanted light effects.●Sidelit subject. Strong side light gives a dramaticeffect but may be too harsh, resulting in toomuch contrast.●Light source in front of the subject. Harshsunlight may cause the subjects to squint theireyes. Crop imageTo crop an image, select Options > Applyeffect > Crop, and a predefined aspect ratio fromthe list. To crop the image size manually, selectManual.If you select Manual, a cross appears in the upperleft corner of the image. Use the scroll key to selectthe area to crop, and select Set. Another crossappears in the lower right corner. Again select thearea to be cropped. To adjust the first selected area,select Back. The selected areas form a rectanglethat forms the cropped image.If you select a predefined aspect ratio, select theupper left corner of the area to be cropped. To resizethe highlighted area, use the scroll key. To freezethe selected area, press the scroll key. To move thearea within the picture, use the scroll key. To selectthe area to be cropped, press the scroll key.Reduce red-eyeTo reduce red-eye in an image, select Options >Apply effect > Red eye reduction.Move the cross onto the eye, and press the scroll key.A loop appears on the display. Contact your network serviceprovider for details of the maximum multimediamessage size that you can send.To send a video clip that is over the maximummultimedia message size allowed by your serviceprovider, you can send the clip using Bluetoothconnectivity. You can also cut the video clip to send it in amultimedia message. In the video editor main view,select Options > Movie > Edit for MMS. Theduration and size of the video clip is displayed. Toedit the size of the clip, scroll left or right. When theclip is the proper size to send, select Options >Send via MMS.If your video clip is in .mp4 format, you may not beable to send it in a multimedia message. To changethe file format of the clip, scroll to it in Photos, andselect Options > Edit > Video editor >Options > Settings > Resolution > MMScompatible. Return to the video editor main view,select Options > Movie > Save, and enter a namefor the clip. The video clip is saved in .3gpp formatand can be sent in a multimedia message. You can also print images usingwireless LAN. If a compatible memory card isinserted, you can store the images to the memorycard, and print them using a compatible printer.You can only print images that are in .jpeg format.The pictures taken with the camera areautomatically saved in .jpeg format.Printer selectionTo print images with Image print, select the imageand the print option in Photos, camera, imageeditor, or image viewer.When you use Image print for the first time, a list ofavailable compatible printers is displayed. Select aprinter. The printer is set as the default printer.To use a printer compatible with PictBridge,connect the compatible data cable before you selectthe print option, and check that the data cable modeis set to Image print or Ask on connection. Home networkAbout home networkYour device is compatible with UPnP. Using awireless LAN (WLAN) access point device or a WLANrouter, you can create a home network and connectcompatible UPnP devices that support WLAN to thenetwork, such as your device, a compatible PC, acompatible printer, and a compatible sound systemor television, or a sound system or a televisionequipped with a compatible wireless multimediareceiver.To use the WLAN function of your device in a homenetwork, you must have a working WLAN homeconnection setup and have other UPnP enabledhome devices to connect to the same homenetwork. See "Wireless LAN", p. 101.The home network uses the security settings of theWLAN connection. Use the home network feature ina WLAN infrastructure network with a WLAN accesspoint device and encryption enabled.You can share and synchronise media files in yourmobile device with other compatible UPnP devicesusing the home network. To manage your homenetwork settings, press , and select Tools >Connectivity > Home media. You can also use thehome network to view, play, copy, or printcompatible media files from your mobile device. Navigate pagesMini Map and page overview help you navigate webpages that contain a large amount of information.When Mini Map is set on in the browser settings andyou scroll through a large web page, Mini Map opensand shows an overview of the web page youbrowse.To set Mini Map on, select Options > Settings >General > Mini map > On.To move in Mini Map, scroll left, right, up, or down.When you find the desired location, stop scrolling.Mini Map disappears and leaves you at the selectedlocation.When you are browsing a web page that contains alarge amount of information, you can also use Pageoverview to view what kind of information thepage contains.To show the page overview of the current page,press 8. Connection securityIf the security indicator ( ) is displayed during aconnection, the data transmission between thedevice and the internet gateway or server isencrypted.The security icon does not indicate that the datatransmission between the gateway and the contentserver (or place where the requested resource isstored) is secure. The service provider secures thedata transmission between the gateway and thecontent server.Security certificates may be required for someservices, such as banking services.
