8. TravellingNeed directions? Looking for a restaurant? Your device hasthe tools to get you where you want to be.Positioning (GPS)You can use applications such as GPS data to determineyour location, or measure distances and coordinates. These applications require a GPS connection.About GPSThe coordinates in the GPS are expressed using theinternational WGS-84 coordinate system. The availabilityof the coordinates may vary by region. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated by thegovernment of the United States, which is solelyresponsible for its accuracy and maintenance. Theaccuracy of location data can be affected by adjustmentsto GPS satellites made by the United States governmentand is subject to change with the United StatesDepartment of Defense civil GPS policy and the FederalRadionavigation Plan. Accuracy can also be affected bypoor satellite geometry. Availability and quality of GPSsignals may be affected by your location, buildings, natural obstacles, and weather conditions. The GPSreceiver should only be used outdoors to allow receptionof GPS signals.Any GPS should not be used for precise locationmeasurement, and you should never rely solely on locationdata from the GPS receiver and cellular radio networks forpositioning or navigation. The trip meter has limited accuracy, and rounding errorsmay occur. Accuracy can also be affected by availabilityand quality of GPS signals.Different positioning methods can be enabled or disabledin positioning settings.Assisted GPS (A-GPS)Your device also supports assisted GPS (A-GPS).A-GPS is a network service.Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is used to retrieve assistance dataover a packet data connection, which assists in calculatingthe coordinates of your current location when your deviceis receiving signals from satellites. When you activate A-GPS, your device receives usefulsatellite information from an assistance data server overthe cellular network. With the help of assisted data, yourdevice can obtain the GPS position faster.54TravellingCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
Your device is preconfigured to use the Nokia A-GPSservice, if no service provider-specific A-GPS settings areavailable. The assistance data is retrieved from the NokiaA-GPS service server only when needed. To disable the A-GPS service, select Menu >Applications > GPS > GPS data and Options >Positioning settings > Positioning methods >Assisted GPS > Disable. You must have an internet access point defined in thedevice to retrieve assistance data from the Nokia A-GPSservice over a packet data connection. The access point forA-GPS can be defined in positioning settings. A wirelessLAN (WLAN) access point cannot be used for this service.Only a packet data internet access point can be used. Yourdevice asks you to select the internet access point whenGPS is used for the first time.Hold your device correctlyThe GPS receiver is located on the back of the device. Whenusing the receiver, make sure that you do not cover theantenna with your hand.Establishing a GPS connection may take from acouple of seconds to several minutes.Establishing a GPS connection in a vehicle maytake longer. The GPS receiver draws its power from thedevice battery. Using the GPS receiver maydrain the battery faster.Tips on creating a GPSconnectionIf your device cannot find the satellite signal, consider thefollowing:•If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a bettersignal.•If you are outdoors, move to a more open space.•Ensure that your hand does not cover the GPS antennaof your device.•If the weather conditions are bad, the signal strengthmay be affected.•Some vehicles have tinted (athermic) windows, whichmay block the satellite signals.Check satellite signal statusTo check how many satellites your device has found, andwhether your device is receiving satellite signals, selectMenu > Applications > GPS > GPS data and Options >Satellite status. If your device has foundsatellites, a bar for each satelliteis displayed in the satelliteinformation view. The longerthe bar, the stronger thesatellite signal is. When yourdevice has received enough data from the satellite signalto calculate the coordinates of your location, the barcolour changes.Initially, your device must receive signals from at least foursatellites to be able to calculate the coordinates of yourlocation. When the initial calculation has been made, it 55TravellingCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
may be possible to continue calculating the coordinates ofyour location with three satellites. However, the accuracyis generally better when more satellites are found.MapsAbout MapsWith Maps, you can see your current location on the map, browse maps of different cities and countries, search forplaces, plan routes from one location to another, savelocations, and send them to compatible devices. You canalso purchase licences for traffic information andnavigation services, if available for your country or region. When you use Maps for the first time, you may need toselect an internet access point for downloading maps.If you browse to an area which is not covered by mapsalready downloaded in your device, a map for the area isautomatically downloaded through the internet. Somemaps may be available in your device or on a memory card. You can also use the Nokia Map Loader PC software todownload maps. To install Nokia Map Loader to acompatible PC, see www.nokia.com/maps.Tip: To avoid data transfer costs, you can also useMaps without an internet connection, and browsethe maps that are saved in your device or memorycard.Note: Downloading maps may involve thetransmission of large amounts of data through yourservice provider’s network. Contact your service providerfor information about data transmission charges.Almost all digital cartography is inaccurate andincomplete to some extent. Never rely solely on thecartography that you download for use in this device.Network positioningSelect Menu > Applications > GPS > Maps. You can use the mobile network to find your currentlocation, even indoors. This is faster but less accurate thanwith GPS, and you cannot use the location as a startingpoint for navigation. To use the mobile network for positioning, select thenetwork-based positioning method from the devicesettings. Itis designed not to exceed the limits for exposure to radiowaves recommended by international guidelines. Theseguidelines were developed by the independent scientificorganisation ICNIRP and include safety margins designedto assure the protection of all persons, regardless of ageand health. The exposure guidelines for mobile devices employ a unitof measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate orSAR. The SAR limit stated in the ICNIRP guidelines is 2.0watts/kilogram (W/kg) averaged over 10 grams of tissue.Tests for SAR are conducted using standard operatingpositions with the device transmitting at its highestcertified power level in all tested frequency bands. Theactual SAR level of an operating device can be below themaximum value because the device is designed to use onlythe power required to reach the network. That amountchanges depending on a number of factors such as howclose you are to a network base station. The highest SARvalue under the ICNIRP guidelines for use of the device atthe ear is 1.05 W/kg.Use of device accessories may result in different SARvalues. SAR values may vary depending on nationalreporting and testing requirements and the network113Additional safety informationCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
band. Additional SAR information may be provided underproduct information at www.nokia.com.Your mobile device is also designed to meet therequirements for exposure to radio waves established bythe Federal Communications Commission (USA) andIndustry Canada. These requirements set a SAR limit of 1.6W/kg averaged over one gram of tissue. The highest SARvalue reported under this standard during productcertification for use at the ear is 0.99 W/kg and whenproperly worn on the body is 0.67 W/kg.114Additional safety informationCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
