ConnectivityYour device offers several options to connect to theinternet or to another compatible device or PC.For more information on different connection methodsand applications, such as Bluetooth, data cable, andsync, see the extended user guide on the productsupport pages of the Nokia website.Wireless LANAbout WLANTo use a wireless LAN (WLAN) connection, it must beavailable in the location, and your device must beconnected to the WLAN. Some WLANs are protected, and you need an access key from the service providerto connect to them.Note: In France, you are only allowed to useWLAN indoors.Features that use WLAN, or that are allowed to run inthe background while using other features, increasethe demand on battery power and reduce the batterylife.Your device supports the following WLAN features:●IEEE 802.11b/g standard●Operation at 2.4 GHz●Wired equivalent privacy (WEP) with keys up to 128bits, Wi-Fi protected access (WPA), and 802.1xauthentication methods. These functions can beused only if they are supported by the network.Important: Always enable one of the availableencryption methods to increase the security of yourwireless LAN connection. Using encryption reduces therisk of unauthorised access to your data.WLAN connectionsTo use a WLAN, you must create an internet accesspoint in a WLAN. Use the access point for applicationsthat need to connect to the internet. A WLANconnection is established when you create a dataconnection using a WLAN access point. The activeWLAN connection is ended when you end the dataconnection. You can also end the connection manually. You can use a WLAN during a voice call or when packetdata connection is active. You can only be connectedto one WLAN access point device at a time, but severalapplications can use the same internet access point.26ConnectivityCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlackCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
When the device is in the Offline profile, you can stilluse a WLAN, if available. Remember to comply with anyapplicable safety requirements when establishing andusing a WLAN connection. If you move the device to another location within theWLAN and out of range of a WLAN access point, theroaming functionality can automatically connect yourdevice to another access point that belongs to thesame WLAN. As long as you remain within range ofaccess points that belong to the same network, yourdevice can stay connected to the network.Tip: To check the unique media access control(MAC) address that identifies your device, forexample to configure the MAC address of yourdevice to a WLAN router, enter *#62209526# inthe home screen. Positioning (GPS)You can use applications such as GPS data to determineyour location, or measure distances and coordinates. These applications require a GPS connection.About GPSThe coordinates in the GPS are expressed in thedegrees and decimal degrees format using theinternational WGS-84 coordinate system. Theavailability of the coordinates may vary by region. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated by thegovernment of the United States, which is solelyresponsible for its accuracy and maintenance. Theaccuracy of location data can be affected byadjustments to GPS satellites made by the UnitedStates government and is subject to change with theUnited States Department of Defense civil GPS policyand the Federal Radionavigation Plan. Accuracy canalso be affected by poor satellite geometry. Availabilityand quality of GPS signals may be affected by yourlocation, buildings, natural obstacles, and weatherconditions. GPS signals may not be available insidebuildings or underground and may be impaired bymaterials such as concrete and metal.GPS should not be used for precise locationmeasurement, and you should never rely solely onlocation data from the GPS receiver and cellular radionetworks for positioning or navigation. The trip meter has limited accuracy, and roundingerrors may occur. Accuracy can also be affected byavailability and quality of GPS signals.Different positioning methods can be enabled ordisabled in positioning settings.Assisted GPS (A-GPS)Your device also supports assisted GPS (A-GPS).A-GPS is a network service.Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is used to retrieve assistance dataover a packet data connection, which assists incalculating the coordinates of your current locationwhen your device is receiving signals from satellites. When you activate A-GPS, your device receives usefulsatellite information from an assistance data serverover the cellular network. With the help of assisteddata, your device can obtain the GPS position faster.Your device is preconfigured to use the Nokia A-GPSservice, if no service provider-specific A-GPS settings35Positioning (GPS)CyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlackCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
are available. The assistance data is retrieved from theNokia A-GPS service server only when needed. To disable the A-GPS service, select Menu >Applications > GPS data and Options >Positioning settings > Positioning methods >Assisted GPS > Disable. You must have an internet access point defined in thedevice to retrieve assistance data from the Nokia A-GPSservice over a packet data connection. The access pointfor A-GPS can be defined in positioning settings. Awireless LAN (WLAN) access point cannot be used forthis service. Only a packet data internet access pointcan be used. Your device asks you to select the internetaccess point when GPS is used for the first time.Hold your device correctlyWhen using the GPS receiver, ensure you do not coverthe antenna with your hand.Establishing a GPSconnection maytake from a coupleof seconds toseveral minutes.Establishing a GPSconnection in avehicle may takelonger. The GPS receiverdraws its power from the device battery. Using the GPSreceiver may drain the battery faster.Tips on creating a GPSconnectionIf your device cannot find the satellite signal, considerthe following:●If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a bettersignal.●If you are outdoors, move to a more open space.●Ensure that your hand does not cover the GPSantenna of your device.●If the weather conditions are bad, the signalstrength may be affected.●Some vehicles have tinted (athermic) windows, which may block the satellite signals.Check satellite signal statusTo check how many satellites your device has found, and whether your device is receiving satellite signals, select Menu > Applications > GPS data andOptions > Satellite status.36Positioning (GPS)CyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlackCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
If your device has foundsatellites, a bar for eachsatellite is displayed in thesatellite information view. The longer the bar, thestronger the satellite signalis. When your device hasreceived enough data from the satellite signal tocalculate the coordinates of your location, the barcolour changes.Initially, your device must receive signals from at leastfour satellites to be able to calculate the coordinatesof your location. When the initial calculation has beenmade, it may be possible to continue calculating thecoordinates of your location with three satellites. However, the accuracy is generally better when moresatellites are found.Nokia MapsFor more information on Maps, see the extended userguide on the product support pages of the Nokiawebsite.About MapsWith Maps, you can see your current location on themap, browse maps of different cities and countries, search for places, plan routes from one location toanother, save locations, and send them to compatibledevices. These guidelines were developed by theindependent scientific organisation ICNIRP and includesafety margins designed to assure the protection of allpersons, regardless of age and health. The exposure guidelines for mobile devices employ aunit of measurement known as the Specific AbsorptionRate or SAR. The SAR limit stated in the ICNIRPguidelines is 2.0 watts/kilogram (W/kg) averaged over10 grams of tissue. Tests for SAR are conducted usingstandard operating positions with the devicetransmitting at its highest certified power level in alltested frequency bands. The actual SAR level of anoperating device can be below the maximum valuebecause the device is designed to use only the powerrequired to reach the network. That amount changesdepending on a number of factors such as how closeyou are to a network base station. The highest SAR value under the ICNIRP guidelines foruse of the device at the ear is 0.76 W/kg.Use of device accessories may result in different SARvalues. SAR values may vary depending on nationalreporting and testing requirements and the networkband. Additional SAR information may be providedunder product information at www.nokia.com.Your mobile device is also designed to meet therequirements for exposure to radio waves establishedby the Federal Communications Commission (USA) andIndustry Canada. These requirements set a SAR limit of1.6 W/kg averaged over one gram of tissue. Thehighest SAR value reported under this standard duringproduct certification for use at the ear is 1.01 W/kg andwhen properly worn on the body is 1.00 W/kg.52Additional safety informationCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlackCyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
