Many of the features require specialnetwork features. Software updates using yourPCSoftware updates may include new features and enhancedfunctions that were not available at the time of purchaseof your device. Updating the software may also improvethe device performance.Nokia Software Updater is a PC application that enablesyou to update your device software. To update your devicesoftware, you need a compatible PC, broadband internetaccess, and a compatible USB data cable to connect yourdevice to the PC.To get more information, to check the release notes forthe latest software versions, and to download the NokiaSoftware Updater application, see www.nokia.com/softwareupdate in the United States or www.nokia-latinoamerica.com/nsu in Latin America.To update the device software, do the following:1. Download and install the Nokia Software Updaterapplication to your PC.2. Connect your device to the PC using a USB data cable,and start the Nokia Software Updater application. TheNokia Software Updater application guides you to backup your files, update the software, and restore yourfiles.Access codesIf you forget any of the access codes, contact your serviceprovider.•Personal identification number (PIN) code — This codeprotects your SIM card against unauthorised use. ThePIN code (4 to 8 digits) is usually supplied with the SIMcard. After three consecutive incorrect PIN code entries,the code is blocked, and you need the PUK code tounblock it.•UPIN code — This code may be supplied with the USIMcard. The USIM card is an enhanced version of the SIMcard and is supported by UMTS mobile phones.•PIN2 code — This code (4 to 8 digits) is supplied withsome SIM cards, and is required to access somefunctions in your device.•Lock code (also known as security code) — The lockcode helps you to protect your device againstunauthorised use. The preset code is 12345. You cancreate and change the code, and set the device torequest the code. Keep the new code secret and in asafe place separate from your device. If you forget thecode and your device is locked, your device will requireservice and additional charges may apply. For moreinformation, contact a Nokia Care point or your devicedealer.•Personal Unblocking Key (PUK) code and PUK2code — These codes (8 digits) are required to change ablocked PIN code or PIN2 code, respectively. If the codesare not supplied with the SIM card, contact the operatorwhose SIM card is in your device.•UPUK code — This code (8 digits) is required to changea blocked UPIN code. Remote lockTo prevent unauthorised use of your device, you can lockyour device and memory card remotely using a textmessage. You must define the message text, and to lockyour device, send that text message to your device. Tounlock your device, you need the lock code.To enable remote locking and to define the text messagecontent to be used, select Menu > Ctrl. panel andPhone > Phone mgmt. > Security > Phone and SIMcard > Remote phone locking > Enabled. Enter thetext message content (5 to 20 characters), verify it, andenter the lock code.Prolong battery lifeMany features in your device increase the demand onbattery power and reduce the battery lifetime. To savebattery power, note the following:•Features that use Bluetooth technology, or allowingsuch features to run in the background while usingother features, increase the demand on battery power.Deactivate Bluetooth technology when you do not needit.•Features that use wireless LAN (WLAN), or allowing suchfeatures to run in the background while using otherfeatures, increase the demand on battery power. WLANon your Nokia device deactivates when you are nottrying to connect, not connected to an access point, ornot scanning for available networks. To further reducebattery consumption, you can specify that your devicedoes not scan, or scans less often, for availablenetworks in the background.•If you have set Packet data connection to Whenavailable in connection settings, and there is no packetdata coverage (GPRS), the device periodically tries toestablish a packet data connection. To prolong theoperating time of your device, select Packet dataconnection > When needed.•The Maps application downloads new map informationwhen you scroll to new areas on the map, whichincreases the demand on battery power. You canprevent the automatic download of new maps.•If the signal strength of the cellular network variesmuch in your area, your device must scan for theavailable network repeatedly. This increases thedemand on battery power.If the network mode is set to dual mode in the networksettings, the device searches for the UMTS network. Youcan set the device to use only the GSM network. To useonly the GSM network, select Menu > Ctrl. panel >Settings and Phone > Network > Networkmode > GSM.•The backlight of the display increases the demand onbattery power. In the display settings, you can changethe length of the time-out period after which thebacklight is switched off, and adjust the light sensorthat observes lighting conditions and adjusts thedisplay brightness. Select Menu > Ctrl. panel >Settings and General > Personalisation > Displayand Light time-out or Brightness.•Leaving applications running in the backgroundincreases the demand on battery power. key, scroll to the application, and press the backspacekey.•To save power, activate the power save mode. Press thepower key, and select Activate power saving. Todeactivate it, press the power key, and selectDeactivate power saving. You may not be able tochange the settings of certain applications when thepower save mode is turned on.2. Get startedInsert the SIM card andbatterySafe removal. Always switch the device off and disconnectthe charger before removing the battery.1. Remove the back cover.2. Remove the battery, if inserted.3. Pull out the SIM card holder, and insert the SIM card.Ensure that the contact area on the card is facing downand that the bevelled corner on the card is facing thebevelled corner on the holder. Push the SIM card holderback in.4. 5. Replace the back cover.Insert the memory cardA memory card may already be inserted in the device. Ifnot, do the following:1. Insert a compatible memory card in the slot. Ensurethat the contact area on the card is facing down andtowards the slot.2. Push the card in. You can heara click when the card locks intoplace.Remove the memorycardImportant: Do not remove the memory card duringan operation when the card is being accessed. Doing somay damage the memory card and the device, and corruptdata stored on the card.1. Before you remove the memory card, press the powerkey, and select Remove memory card. All applicationsare closed.2. When Removing memory card will close all openapplications. Remove anyway? is displayed, selectYes.3. Remove memory card and press 'OK' is displayed.4. Press the memory card to release it from the slot.5. Pull out the memory card, and close the memory cardslot cover. If the device is switched on, select OK.Antenna locationsYour device may have internal and external antennas.Avoid touching the antenna area unnecessarily while theantenna is transmitting or receiving. Switch the device onand offTo switch on the device:1. Press and hold the power key.2. If the device asks for a PIN code or lock code,enter it, and select OK. The preset lock codeis 12345. If you forget the code and yourdevice is locked, your device will requireservice and additional charges may apply. Formore information, contact a Nokia Care point or yourdevice dealer.To switch off the device, press the power key briefly, andselect Switch off!.Charge the batteryYour battery has been partially charged at the factory. Ifthe device indicates a low charge, do the following:1. Connect the charger to a wall outlet.2. Connect the charger plug to the device.3. When the device indicates a full charge, disconnect thecharger from the device, then from the wall outlet.You do not need to charge the battery for a specific lengthof time, and you can use the device while it is charging. Ifthe battery is completely discharged, it may take severalminutes before the charging indicator appears on thedisplay or before any calls can be made.Charging with the USB data cableCharging with the USB data cable is slower than chargingwith the charger. Charging with the USB data cable maynot work if you use a USB hub. USB hubs may beincompatible for charging a USB device.When the USB data cable is connected, you can transferdata at the same time as charging.1. Connect a compatible USB device to your device usinga compatible USB data cable.Depending on the type of the device that is used forcharging, it may take a while for charging to start.2. You may need to select thecable mode.To make handsfree phone calls, use a headset with acompatible remote control unit, or use the microphone onthe device.Screen saver clockWhen the screen saver of your device is activated (thedisplay is black), press the scroll key to see the time anddate.Write textThe input methods provided in the device may varyaccording to different sales markets.Write text with the keyboardYour device has a full keyboard.To insert punctuation marks, press the corresponding keyor a combination of keys.To switch between the different character cases, press theShift key.To insert digits or characters printed at the top of keys,press and hold the corresponding key, or press and holdthe function key and press the corresponding key.To erase a character, press the backspace key. To eraseseveral characters, press and hold the backspace key.To insert characters and symbols that are not shown onthe keyboard, press the Chr key.To copy text, press and hold the Shift key, and scroll tohighlight the word, phrase, or line of text you want tocopy. Press Ctrl + C. MapsAbout MapsWith Maps, you can see your current location on the map,browse maps of different cities and countries, search forplaces, plan routes from one location to another, savelocations, and send them to compatible devices. You canalso purchase licences for traffic information andnavigation services, if available for your country or region.When you use Maps for the first time, you may need toselect an internet access point for downloading maps.If you browse to an area which is not covered by mapsalready downloaded in your device, a map for the area isautomatically downloaded through the internet. Somemaps may be available in your device or on a memory card.You can also use the Nokia Map Loader PC software todownload maps. Music playerSelect Menu > Media > Music player.Music player supports files formats such as AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, MP3, and WMA. Music player does not necessarilysupport all features of a file format or all the variations offile formats.You can also use Music player to listen to podcast episodes.Podcasting is a method for delivering audio or videocontent over the internet using either RSS or Atomtechnologies for playback on mobile devices and PCs.FM radioThe FM radio depends on an antenna other than thewireless device antenna. A compatible headset oraccessory needs to be attached to the device for the FMradio to function properly.Select Menu > Media > Radio.The quality of the radio broadcast depends on thecoverage of the radio station in that particular area.12. Security and data managementManage the data and software on your device, and takecare of the security of the device and its contents.Important: Your device can only support oneantivirus application. Having more than one applicationwith antivirus functionality could affect performance andoperation or cause the device to stop functioning.Lock the deviceThe lock code protects your device against unauthoriseduse. The preset code is 12345.To lock the device, in the home screen, press the powerkey, and select Lock phone.To unlock your device, select Unlock, enter the lock code,and select OK.To change the lock code, select Menu > Ctrl. panel >Settings and General > Security > Phone and SIMcard. Enter the old code and then the new code twice. Thenew code can be 4-255 characters long. Both alphabetsand digits can be used, and both uppercase and lowercasealphabets are possible.Keep the new lock code secret and separate from yourdevice.If you lose the lock code, you must take the device to aNokia authorised service facility. You can also lock the device remotely by sending a textmessage to the device. To enable remote locking, and todefine the text for the message, select Menu > Ctrl.panel > Settings and General > Security > Phoneand SIM card > Remote phone locking > Enabled.Enter the remote lock message, and confirm the message.The message must be at least 5 characters long.Memory card securitySelect Menu > Office > File mgr..You can protect a memory card with a password to preventunauthorised access. To set a password, select Options >Memory card password > Set. The password can be upto 8 characters long and is case-sensitive. The password isstored in your device. You do not need to enter it againwhile you use the memory card on the same device. If youuse the memory card on another device, you are asked forthe password. Not all memory cards support passwordprotection.To remove the memory card password, select Options >Memory card password > Remove. When you removethe password, the data on the memory card is notprotected against unauthorised use.To open a locked memory card, select Options > Unlockmemory card. Enter the password.If you cannot recall the password to unlock a lockedmemory card, you may reformat the card, in which casethe card is unlocked and password removed. Formattinga memory card deletes all data stored on the card.EncryptionSelect Menu > Ctrl. panel > Phone > Encryption.Encrypt your device or memory card to prevent outsidersfrom accessing your important information.Encrypt device memory ormemory cardTo encrypt the device memory, select Phone memory.To encrypt the memory card, select Memory card andfrom the following:•Encrypt without saving key — Encrypt the memorycard without saving the encryption key. To set the keypad to lock automatically after a definedperiod, select Phone and SIM card > Keypad autolockperiod.To set a time-out after which the device is automaticallylocked and can be used only if the correct lock code isentered, select Phone and SIM card > Phone autolockperiod. Enter a number for the time-out in minutes, orselect None to set off the autolock period. When the deviceis locked, you can still answer incoming calls, and calls maystill be possible to the official emergency numberprogrammed into your device.To set a new lock code, select Phone and SIM card > Lockcode. Some or all access points may be presetfor your device by your service provider, and you may notbe able to change, create, edit, or remove them.When you select one of the access point groups ( , ,, , ), you can see the access point types: indicates a protected access point indicates a packet data access point indicates a wireless LAN (WLAN) access pointTip: You can create internet access points in a WLANwith the WLAN wizard.To create a new access point, select Access point. Thedevice asks to check for available connections. After thesearch, connections that are already available aredisplayed and can be shared by a new access point. BatteryBattery and chargerinformationYour device is powered by a rechargeable battery. Thebattery intended for use with this device is BP-4L. Nokiamay make additional battery models available for thisdevice. This device is intended for use when supplied withpower from the following chargers: AC-8. The exactcharger model number may vary depending on the typeof plug. The plug variant is identified by one of thefollowing: E, EB, X, AR, U, A, C, K, or UB.The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds oftimes, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk andstandby times are noticeably shorter than normal, replacethe battery. Use only Nokia approved batteries, andrecharge your battery only with Nokia approved chargersdesignated for this device.If a battery is being used for the first time or if the batteryhas not been used for a prolonged period, it may benecessary to connect the charger, then disconnect andreconnect it to begin charging the battery.
