GPRS uses packet data technology whereinformation is sent in short bursts of data over themobile network. The benefit of sending data in packetsis that the network is occupied only when sending orreceiving data. As GPRS uses the network efficiently, itallows for quick data connection set-up and fast datatransmission speeds. You must subscribe to the GPRS service. For availabilityand subscription to GPRS, contact your networkoperator or service provider.Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) is similar to GPRS, but it enablesfaster connection. For more information on theavailability of EGPRS and data transfer speed, contactyour network operator or service provider. Note thatwhen you have selected GPRS as a data bearer, thedevice uses EGPRS instead of GPRS if this is available inthe network.During a voice call, you cannot establish a GPRSconnection, and any existing GPRS connection is put onhold unless the network supports dual transfer mode.UMTSUMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) isa 3G mobile communication system. Besides voice anddata, UMTS enables audio and video delivery to wirelessdevices.Your device can automatically switch between the GSMand UMTS networks. To select which network to use, select Menu > Tools >Settings > Network and the network in Networkmode. Check with your local authorities for moreinformation.Features using wireless LAN, or allowing such featuresto run in the background while using other features, increase the demand on battery power and reduce thebattery life. This device can detect and connect to a wireless localarea network. If you move the device to another location within thewireless LAN and out of range of a wireless LAN accesspoint, the roaming functionality can automaticallyconnect your device to another access point thatbelongs to the same network. As long as you remainwithin range of access points that belong to the samenetwork, your device can stay connected to thenetwork.Tip: A wireless LAN connection is establishedwhen you create a data connection using awireless LAN Internet access point. The activewireless LAN connection is ended when youend the data connection.Your device enables different types of communicationin a wireless LAN. The two operating modes areinfrastructure and ad hoc.•The infrastructure operating mode allows two kindsof communication: wireless devices communicatewith each other through a wireless LAN access pointor wireless devices communicate with a wired LANdevice through a wireless LAN access point. Theadvantage of the infrastructure operating mode isthat you can have more control over networkconnections because they pass through an accesspoint. A wireless device can access the services thatare available in a regular wired LAN: companydatabase, e-mail, the Internet, and other networkresources, for example.•In the ad hoc operating mode you can send data toand receive it from other devices with compatiblewireless LAN support , for example, to be printed. These functions may require an additional thirdparty application to work. No wireless LAN accesspoint is required. Simply make the necessaryconfigurations and start communicating. Ad hocnetworking is easy to set up, but communication islimited to devices that are within range and supportcompatible wireless LAN technology.Connection managerSelect Menu > Connect. > Conn mgr.To view the status of data connections or endconnections, select Act. data conn..To search for wireless LANs available within range, select Availab. The existence of a certificatedoes not offer any protection by itself; the certificatemanager must contain correct, authentic, or trustedcertificates for increased security to be available.Certificates have a restricted lifetime. If Expiredcertificate or Certificate not valid yet is shown even ifthe certificate should be valid, check that the currentdate and time in your device are correct. Before changing any certificate settings, you mustmake sure that you really trust the owner of thecertificate and that the certificate really belongs to thelisted owner.Digital certificates are used to verify the origins ofsoftware but do not guarantee safety. There are threedifferent types of certificates: authority certificates, personal certificates, and server certificates. During asecure connection, a server may send a servercertificate to your device. Upon receipt, it is checkedthrough an authority certificate stored on your device. You receive notification if the identity of the server isnot authentic or if you do not have the correctcertificate in your device.Download a certificate from a web site, or receive acertificate as an e-mail attachment, or as a messagesent through a Bluetooth or infrared connection.Certificates should be used when you connect to anonline bank or a remote server to transfer confidentialinformation. They should also be used if you want toreduce the risk of viruses or other malicious software, and to check the authenticity of software when youdownload and install software to your device.Tip: When you add a new certificate, check itsauthenticity.VPNSee "Mobile VPN ," p. 69.Security settings forwireless LAN access pointsSee "Security settings for wireless LAN accesspoints," p. 100.105Securityfile:///C:/USERS/MODEServer/lkatajis/12724600/rm-89_smailer/en/issue_1/rm-89_smailer_en_1.xml Page 105 Jan 12, 2006 8:40:21 AMfile:///C:/USERS/MODEServer/lkatajis/12724600/rm-89_smailer/en/issue_1/rm-89_smailer_en_1.xml Page 105 Jan 12, 2006 8:40:21 AM

Battery informationYour device is powered by a rechargeable battery. Thefull performance of a new battery is achieved only aftertwo or three complete charge and discharge cycles. Thebattery can be charged and discharged hundreds oftimes, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk andstandby times are noticeably shorter than normal, buya new battery. Use only Nokia approved batteries, andrecharge your battery only with Nokia approvedchargers designated for this device.Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and thedevice when not in use. Do not leave fully chargedbattery connected to a charger, since overcharging mayshorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fully chargedbattery will lose its charge over time.If the battery is completely discharged, it may take afew minutes before the charging indicator appears onthe display or before any calls can be made.Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never useany charger or battery that is damaged.Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental short-circuiting can occur when a metallic object such as acoin, clip, or pen causes direct connection of the positive(+) and negative (-) terminals of the battery. (These looklike metal strips on the battery.) This might happen, forexample, when you carry a spare battery in your pocketor purse. Short-circuiting the terminals may damagethe battery or the connecting object.Leaving the battery in hot or cold places, such as in aclosed car in summer or winter conditions, will reducethe capacity and lifetime of the battery. Always try tokeep the battery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). A device with a hot or cold battery may not worktemporarily, even when the battery is fully charged.Battery performance is particularly limited intemperatures well below freezing.Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode.Batteries may also explode if damaged.
