Do not useliquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners.Use a damp cloth for cleaning.6 AttachmentsDo not use attachments not rec-ommended by the product manu-facturer as they may cause hazards.7 Water and MoistureDo not use this product near wa-ter — for example, near a bath tub,wash bowl, kitchen sink, laundrytub, in a wet basement, or near aswimming pool, and the like.8 AccessoriesDo not place this product on anunstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket,or table. The product may fall,causing serious injury to a child oradult, and serious damage to theproduct. Use only with a cart,stand, tripod, bracket, or table rec-ommended by the manufacturer,or sold with the product. Anymounting of the product shouldfollow the manufacturer’s instruc-tions, and should use a mountingaccessory recommended by themanufacturer.9A product and cart combinationshould be moved with care. Quickstops, excessiveforce, and un-even surfacesmay cause theproduct and cartcombination tooverturn.10 VentilationSlots and openings in the cabinetare provided for ventilation and toensure reliable operation of theproduct and to protect it fromoverheating, and these openingsmust not be blocked or covered.The openings should never beblocked by placing the product ona bed, sofa, rug, or other similarsurface. This product should notbe placed in a built-in installationsuch as a bookcase or rack unlessproper ventilation is provided orthe manufacturer’s instructionshave been adhered to.11 Power SourcesThis product should be operatedonly from the type of powersource indicated on the markinglabel. If you are not sure of thetype of power supply to yourhome, consult your product dealeror local power company. Forproducts intended to operate frombattery power, or other sources,refer to the operating instructions.12 Grounding or PolarizationThis product is equipped with apolarized alternating-current lineplug (a plug having one blade widerthan the other). This plug will fitinto the power outlet only oneway. This is a safety feature. If youare unable to insert the plug fullyinto the outlet, try reversing theplug. If the plug should still fail tofit, contact your electrician to re-place your obsolete outlet. Do notdefeat the safety purpose of thepolarized plug.13 Power-Cord ProtectionPower-supply cords should berouted so that they are not likelyto be walked on or pinched byitems placed upon or against them,paying particular attention tocords at plugs, convenience recep-tacles, and the point where theyexit from the product.14 Outdoor Antenna GroundingIf an outside antenna or cable sys-tem is connected to the product,be sure the antenna or cable sys-tem is grounded so as to providesome protection against voltagesurges and built-up static charges.Article 810 of the NationalElectrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70,provides information with regardto proper grounding of the mastand supporting structure, ground-ing of the lead-in wire to an an-tenna discharge unit, size ofgrounding conductors, location ofantenna-discharge unit, connec-tion to grounding electrodes, andrequirements for the groundingelectrode.15 LightningFor added protection for thisproduct during a lightning storm,or when it is left unattended andunused for long periods of time,unplug it from the wall outlet anddisconnect the antenna or cablesystem. 3overhead power lines or otherelectric light or power circuits, orwhere it can fall into such powerlines or circuits. When installingan outside antenna system, ex-treme care should be taken tokeep from touching such powerlines or circuits as contact withthem might be fatal.17 OverloadingDo not overload wall outlets, ex-tension cords, or integral conve-nience receptacles as this can re-sult in fire risk or electric shock.18 Object and Liquid EntryNever push objects of any kindinto this product through openingsas they may touch dangerous volt-age points or short-out parts thatcould result in a fire or electricshock. Never spill liquid of anykind on the product.19 ServicingDo not attempt to service thisproduct yourself as opening orremoving covers may expose youto dangerous voltage or other haz-ards. Refer all servicing to quali-fied service personnel.20 Damage Requiring ServiceUnplug this product from the walloutlet and refer servicing to quali-fied service personnel under thefollowing conditions:(a) When the power-supply cordor plug is damaged.(b)If liquid has been spilled, or ob-jects have fallen into the product.(c) If the product has been ex-posed to rain or water.(d) If the product does not oper-ate normally by following theoperating instructions. Ad-just only those controls thatare covered by the operatinginstructions as an improperadjustment of other controlsmay result in damage and willoften require extensive workby a qualified technician torestore the product to its nor-mal operation.(e) If the product has beendropped or damaged in anyway.(f) When the product exhibits adistinct change in perfor-mance – this indicates a needfor service.21 Replacement PartsWhen replacement parts are re-quired, be sure the service techni-cian has used replacement partsspecified by the manufacturer orhave the same characteristics asthe original part. Unauthorizedsubstitutions may result in fire,electric shock or other hazards.22 Safety CheckUpon completion of any serviceor repairs to this product, ask theservice technician to performsafety checks to determine thatthe product is in proper operat-ing condition.23 HeatThe product should be situatedaway from heat sources such asradiators, heat registers, stoves, orother products (including amplifi-ers) that produce heat.CONDENSATIONLeave the VCR on, without a tape in it,for 2 hours if the VCR has been ex-posed to sudden changes in tempera-ture. Sudden temperature changescause moisture to form on the metalparts inside the VCR. This moisture cancause the tape to stick and damage thehead. Leaving the VCR on for a 2 hourperiod will dry the inside of the VCR.PROTECT THE POWER CORDDo not damage the power cord. Dam-age to the power cord may cause a fireor shock hazard. When unplugging thepower cord, please hold it by the plugand remove it carefully.DO NOT PLACE HEAVYOBJECTS ON THE RECORDERHeavy objects placed on the recorderwill cause damage.WHEN NOT IN USEWhen you finish operating the re-corder, always unload the cassette andturn OFF the VCR POWER.CARE OF THE VIDEO CASSETTETAPES• Avoid violent vibration or shock.• Do not place in a location wherestrong magnetic fields exist (near amotor, transformer or magnet).• Never place or store in direct sun-light.• Avoid dusty places.• Place the cassette in the cassette caseand store vertically.• Never store tape in a high humiditylocation.INFORMATIONThis equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part15 of the FCC Rules. Individual televisions, stereo systems and satellite receiverscan vary from those shown here. The first diagrams show connections for common equipment. This network“passes” remote control commands between Mitsubishicomponents. That is, when the A/V Network is con-nected, you can point your VCR remote control at the TV,and the TV will “pass” the commands onto the VCR.1You will need a cable with a “mini” jack at both ends.A mini jack is the kind you find on headphones forpersonal stereos. This cable may be included withyour Mitsubishi TV. 10PlaybackSetting Up Your VCRThe first thing you need to do is set up your VCR so that you can see thepicture coming from the VCR. It’s important to take a few minutes to set upyour VCR correctly before you try to use it. Based on your type of TV, chooseone of the following:TV with Audio/ Video Inputs1Turn on your TV and switch it to the correct external input. Now your remote is ready to operate your HS-U776.Loading a TapeTapes can be loaded into your VCR as long as the VCR is plugged in. Even whenthe VCR POWER is off, loading a tape will automatically turn the VCR on. Useonly tapes that have a or label.1Hold the tape so that the long narrow edge with the contents label facesyou. The other edge is hinged and should face the VCR. The plasticwindow that shows the videotape should face up.2Gently insert the tape evenly into the cassette slot until the VCRautomatically takes it in.If the VCR will not automatically take the tape in, press EJECT and try again.Your VCR will eject the tape if it is loaded improperly. If the VCR ejects thetape; remove the tape, check to see that the contents label is facing you, thatthe geared tape reels are facing down, wait a few seconds, and try again.Playing a Tape1Press PLAY on the front panel or the remote control.The VCR will automatically play the tape at the correct speed. This system has been developed to simplify the operation of your VCRwith clear, understandable language and design.Before your VCR can receive television channels or you can program your VCRto record, you need to memorize all of the channels you can receive into yourVCR and set the clock. Additionally, if you are using a satellite receiver, youneed to do a first time setup to memorizing satellite brand code. Fortunately,your VCR makes this an easy process with our menu system.When using the on-screen menus, use the ADJUST buttons to move thehighlight bar up or down and to change the setting of selected features. Pressthe ENTER button to enter a selection or adjustment. Press the CANCELbutton to cancel or clear a setting.Memorizing Channels AutomaticallyUsing this process, your VCR will automatically memorize all of the televisionstations available to you. You can later get rid of unwanted or unused stations.You need to manually set the brand code for the a satellite receiver.If your local cable company scrambles some or all stations, and/or requiresyou to use a cable box, then your ability to memorize channels wouldnormally be limited. 18Setting the ClockYou have to set the clock using either Setting the Auto Clock or Settingthe Clock Manually before you can program your VCR to record.Setting the Auto ClockYour VCR can set the clock automatically by picking up a time signal whichsome TV and cable channels transmit with their broadcasts. Most PBS stationssend this signal; however, this function works only if a channel in your area isbroadcasting a time signal. If you don’t receive this signal, set the clock manu-ally.1Press MENU on the remote control. VCR Main Menu will appear.2Press the ADJUST buttons to select First Time Set-Up. Press ENTER. 23Using Standby One-Touch Recording (OTR2)Standby One-Touch Recording (also called OTR2) is a programming method tobegin recording within 24 hours and record in 30 minutes intervals. Before youuse OTR2, make sure the clock has been set correctly.1Load a tape with its erasure prevention tab intact into the VCR.2Set the recording format. See Selecting Recording Format on page 24.3Set the speed at which you would like to record by pressing SP/EP on theremote control or REC SPEED on the front panel.4Set the VCR’s input to tuner. The VCR will display thefunctions and settings on your TV screen. The SAP broadcast is recorded only on the mono track.Use the normal recording function to record the SAP broadcast on the monotrack by choosing STEREO+SAP. Otherwise, choose Stereo. 30Canceling a recording in progressThere are two ways to cancel a recording in progress:Press STOP. The recording stops, but the program is not cancelled.Therefore, if you press REC, the recording will start again.Press POWER on the front panel. The recording stops and the programis cancelled.Changing while programmingTo change one of your settings (such as start time) while you are programming:Press ENTER to move forward through the program list.Press CANCEL to move backward.Then use the ADJUST buttons to change the setting.You will cancel the entire program if you press CANCEL while the channelnumber is flashing.Quick ProgramQuick Program is an exclusive Mitsubishi feature that simplifies the process ofprogramming your VCR to record. When you press QUICK PROGRAM/VCRPlus+ on the remote control, you will immediately see the VCR Plus+ Programto record menu and can begin programming right away.You can use this feature even when the VCR is stopped, playing, recording, fastforwarding, rewinding, or off. 33Timer Recording HintsTo use the VCR before timer recording begins, press POWER on the remoteonce. This turns the programmed recording light off and the VCR on.If you use POWER on the front panel for this purpose, press it twice. Pressingit once turns off the programmed recording light; pressing it again turns theVCR on.When you are finished using the VCR, turn the VCR power off again. Make surethe programmed recording light is back on.After a program has been recorded, the VCR memory of that program iscleared (unless you have scheduled the VCR to record the program every dayor every week).If there is already a program in the VCR’s memory, you will see the Recapscreen when you bring up the menus for programming to record (unless youare programming with the QUICK PROGRAM/VCR Plus+). If the VCR’smemory is full, Program memory is full will appear on the screen. If so, youmust erase a program before you can enter a new one.If a tape runs out during timer recording, the VCR ejects the tape and theprogrammed recording light and the tape status symbol will flash. If you do not have these cables, they are available at your local electronics dealer. You can use either astandard RCA video cable or an S-video cable. 39Adjusting the Trackingautomatic trackingYour VCR automatically adjusts the tape to give you the best quality picture.When you start playback of a newly inserted tape, the DIGITAL TRACKINGlight (D) will flash, showing that the VCR is adjusting the picture. When the VCRhas finished adjusting the picture, the DIGITAL TRACKING light will shinesteadily.A certain amount of “noise” in the picture or sound is normal while the VCR istracking a tape.manual trackingFrom time to time, you might play a tape that has excess noise in the picture,often looking like vibration or interference at the top or bottom of the screen.To correct the picture, you have to manually track the tape.1While the tape is playing, press CHANNEL on the front panel until thepicture is clear of excess noise.2To continue automatic tracking, press both front panel CHANNEL buttonsat the same time. 40Searching TechniquesYour VCR lets you search through a tape in a number of ways. These include:Quick search (CM skip) -- 30 second intervalsSpeed search -- visually searchCounter zero stop -- direct to start of recordingIndex search -- find specific index pointsQuick search (CM skip)Quick search lets you skip over the tape you are playing in about 30 secondintervals. It is designed so that you can quickly speed through any commercialsyou may have recorded. To do this:1Make sure that you have set the VCR/TV slide switch on the remotecontrol to the VCR position.2While playing a tape, choose the desired search time by pressing a numberbutton.The VCR will speed through the selected length of tape, then resume playback.This screen will show the search time and the gauge. Each mark on the gaugerepresents 15 seconds. The marks will disappear, one by one, every 15 secondsof the search time. You can select a search time up to 3 minutes.Speed searchUse speed search to visually search through the contents of a videotape.1While playing a tape, press FF or REW on the front panel or on theremote control. You will see the picture as it fast forwards or rewinds.Noise bars may appear in the pictures.2If you press FF or REW and hold it down for about 1 second, the searchspeed will increase.3To resume normal playback, press FF or REW again quickly, or press PLAY.IMPORTANTIMPORTANTThe fastest search speed that allows you to see the picture is about 30times normal speed. To do this, pressSTOP, then FF or REW. 41Counter zero stopCounter zero stop allows you to quickly access the beginning of a recorded orplayback section of a tape. The counter zero stop will automatically fastforward or rewind the tape to “0H00M00S” and stop.1Press CANCEL on the remote control at the point you wish to locatelater. The counter will reset to “0H00M00S”.2When you wish to return to the point specified in step 1, press AUDIO/VIDEO on the remote control. The function menu appears on yourscreen. Press AUDIO/VIDEO until the Counter zero stop functionappears.3Press ENTER to start the counter zero stop.The VCR will automatically search to the counter “0H00M00S” and then stop.The VCR may stop slightly before or after the counter “0H00M00S”.Index searchIndex search is a way to find specific points on a tape. Index marks are added automatically whenever yourVCR starts a new recording; you can also add index marks manually at any pointduring recording.automatic index marksWhenever recording is begun from the STOP mode, an index mark is automati-cally added to the tape. 47Displaying the Time Gauge and the Remaining TimeThe time gauge is a graphic representation of your position on a video tape.The left side of the gauge is the tape start (S), and the right side is the tape end(E). For a T-120 length tape played at standard (SP) speed, each mark on thegauge represents about 15 minutes. The remaining time display shows the time,in hours and minutes, left until the end of a tape.the time gauge and the remaining time automatically appear during:fast forward and rewind (from a stopped tape)counter zero stopindex searches,rewinding for repeat playbackTurn off the time gauge and the remaining time by pressing DISPLAY twice.to make the time gauge and the remaining time appear:Press DISPLAY once. The time gauge and remaining time appear on the TVscreen, and the remaining time appears on the front panel display. They disap-pear after 4 seconds when playing a tape.To turn off the display, press DISPLAY twice.IMPORTANTIMPORTANTThe time gauge and remaining time work by detecting control signals onrecorded tapes. Therefore they do not function while playing blank tapes.The remaining time display may not show the correct remaining time if theTape function is incorrectly set, if you are using speed search, if you are using aspecial length cassette (such as T-10 length), or if you are using an S-VHS-C or aVHS-C tape with an adapter.
