Getting Started Thank you for purchasing a Motorola Spirit radio. Your radio is a product of Motorola’s 50 years of experience as a world leader in the designing and manufacturing of communications equipment. With proper care and use, your Motorola radio should give you years of reliable communication. This may permanently damage the battery. The Ni-Cd battery ships uncharged, it must be fully charged for 16 hours before use (first charge only). It is recommended that only Motorola batteries and chargers are used with the radio. The Ni-Cd rechargeable battery pack will provide approximately 8 hours of use on a 2 watt radio and 10 hours on a 1 watt radio with normal use i.e. 5% sending messages, 5% receiving messages and 90% in standby mode. To Install/Remove battery : Note : Radio must be in OFF position before installing/removing battery. 1. Push back battery cover latches until you see the orange tabs. 2. Slide battery cover down and lift to remove. 3. To replace/install battery, insert the battery pack with arrows facing you and towards top of radio.. 4. Replace the battery cover and lock latches. 5. To remove battery: remove cover (steps 1 & 2), turn the radio over and tap the battery end of the radio against the palm of your hand. The battery will drop into your hand. Charging the Ni-Cd battery Pack Charging Adapter Instructions : 1. Turn the radio off. 2. Lift accessory cover and plug the Charger Adapter firmly into the small jack (lower hole). 3. Plug the Charger into an electric outlet. The red light on the charger will glow continuously if charging properly. 4. Allow 10 hours for the battery to fully charge. NOTE: For optimum battery life, the battery should not be left charging for prolonged periods after reaching full charge. Charging the battery over the weekend is acceptable. NOTE: Transmitting while radio is charging in the Wall Charger can cause the radio transmitter or the charger to operate improperly. Do not transmit while radio is charging. If radio is on while charging, at least twice as much time is required to charge the battery. Turn the radio off when charging. 10 Hour Desktop Charger Instructions : 1. Connect Desktop Charger and Charger Adapter. 2. Charge the battery while inside the radio by placing the radio in the Charger Tray with radio facing towards you. You can also charge the battery by removing battery from radio and placing it in Charger Tray with silver contacts facing down and arrow facing toward the front. FCC ID: AZ489FT3797 3. The LED light on top of the charger will glow red continuously when radio / battery is inserted in charger. If light does not come on, check radio / battery is properly inserted and check battery/ charger contacts to be sure they are clean. The red LED will continue to glow until the radio / battery is removed from Charger Tray. 4. Allow 10 hours for the battery to fully charge. Low Battery Alert: When the battery is low, the radio will beep 3 to 4 seconds after turning power on, every 10 minutes, and after release of the Push-To-Talk button. Recharge the battery pack immediately to avoid interrupted use. Note: Remove battery pack before storing your radio for extended periods. Batteries corrode over time and may cause permanent damage to your radio. Antenna To attach the antenna, rotate the antenna clockwise onto the top of the radio until hand tight. Note: The antenna should always be installed when operating the radio. Operating the radio without an antenna greatly reduces the range of the radio and causes battery to get used more quickly. Belt Clip Spirit radios come standard with a belt clip. To Attach / Remove: 1. 2. 3. 4. Align the belt clip to the mounting rails on the back of the radio Push the belt clip down until it clicks into place. To remove, pull tab on belt clip away from radio to release. Slide belt clip up and off. Before You Can Talk Please read this manual carefully to ensure you know how to properly operate the radio before use. There are default settings programmed into your radio for Frequency per Channel, Interference Eliminator Code and Bandwidth. If it is necessary to change these default settings, the radio will audibly guide you through a series of programming steps. Once you have reached your chosen Frequency, move your Channel Selector Knob to the next channel and the radio will announce the Frequency of this channel. Repeat step 2 until you reach your desired frequency. For 4 Channel radios, repeat steps 2 and 3 for the remaining channels. 4. When you have selected the frequency for each channel you wanted to change, press monitor button to save your selections. You are now in the Code change mode. The radio will announce the Code the radio is set to. 5. Press Push-To-Talk repeatedly or hold down to hear Code choices. See Interference Eliminator Table below for details. 7. Select and save your chosen Code by pressing the monitor button. You are now in Band change mode. The radio will announce Band 25 as the current setting. 6. FCC ID: AZ489FT3797 Things to Note : • Interference Eliminator Code: Codes filter out static, noise and unwanted chatter on radio channels. You can only communicate with radios using the same channel and code. This will not make your conversations private as other users with uncoded radios will hear you. If the channel you are using is busy, change to another channel. For compatibility with radios that do not have the Interference Eliminator Code feature, the radio can be set to “Code Off” mode. • Bandwidth : In the USA, the FCC is allocating new frequencies to the business radio service. All these future frequencies must operate on 12.5kHz Bandwidth. All frequencies currently available for Business Radio use operate on 25kHz Bandwidth. All M-Series radios will ship with Band 25 as default but will have the capability to upgrade to Band 12.5 to work with next generations of business radio. This gives users the flexibility to add to their radio fleet in the future without changing out their complete radio system. FOR ALL M SERIES RADIOS, ENSURE YOU SET YOUR RADIO TO BAND 25kHz. • To talk to others in your group, the radios must be set to the same channel and code (see Tables below for complete list). If you do not want to change frequencies on each channel, then push the monitor button after you have changed the positions you need and the radio will then go into code change mode. No programming is required for the “S” position on your Channel Selector Knob. Only select models have “S” position. Code numbers that have two digit (10-38) will be announced as “one zero”...”one one”... etc. You cannot transmit when you are in change Frequency, Code or Band mode. You will hear a beep and see the red LED flash momentarily to indicate the radio is on. To turn the radio off, turn the volume/on/off knob counterclockwise. You will hear a click to indicate the radio is turned off. Adjust The Volume: Hold Monitor button down to listen to audio level while rotating Volume knob. Rotate dial clockwise to increase and counter clockwise to decrease volume. To Send and Receive messages: Check channel activity by pressing Monitor button. You will hear static if the channel is clear to use. Do not transmit if someone is talking on channel. 1. To send a message, press the Push-To-Talk and speak into the radio. (To maximize clarity, hold radio 3 to 5 inches from mouth). 2. The red LED Indicator Light will glow continuously when sending messages. 3. To listen for messages, release the Push-To-Talk button. Time-out Timer: The Time-out Timer feature helps extend battery life. The radio will emit a warning tone if the Push-To-Talk button is pressed for 2 continuous minutes and will stop transmitting. Hands-Free Use (Optional Feature) Built-in Voice Activated Transmission (VOX) allows you hands free operation of your radio. The sound of your voice activates transmission when the radio is used with a Headset With Swivel Boom Mic (HMN9038) or Earpiece with Microphone (HMN9039) (Both headset and earpiece are sold separately). To Use VOX Feature: 1. Turn the radio off. 2. Open accessory connector cover and plug the accessory’s connector into jack. 3. Turn radio on and lower volume before placing accessory on head or in ear. Press Monitor button while rotating Volume Knob to adjust volume to a comfortable listening level. 4. To transmit, speak into accessory microphone. To receive, stop talking. Note: There will be a brief delay between when you start or stop talking and radio transmission. FCC ID: AZ489FT3797 Exit VOX mode: Press Push-To-Talk button once. To transmit, press Push-To-Talk button on radio. To receive, release the Push-To-Talk. To return to VOX mode, turn the radio off, then on again. Note: The accessory jack cover is not detachable and should be closed when not in use. Scan (Optional Feature) Some M Series models have scan. Scan allows the user to monitor two or more channels for activity, so you will not miss any messages. To scan : 1. Move Channel Selector Knob to scan “S” position. The radio will scan the radio’s programmed channels. If there are any transmissions on any of the channels, the radio will switch to that channel and you will receive the message. 2. You can transmit back to last channel that you received a message from by pressing the PushTo-Talk button within 5 seconds of message being received. If you do not want to reply to the message, the radio will go back to Scan mode after 5 seconds. While in Scan mode, if you press the Push-To-Talk button before the radio picks up any activity on a channel, you will transmit on Channel 1. Care and Safety 1. Don’t use cleaners or solvents on the radio, they can harm the body and leak inside, causing permanent damage. 2. Battery contacts may be wiped with a dry, lint-free cloth. 3. To clean the radio, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with water. If the radio gets wet, turn it off and remove batteries immediately. Dry battery compartment with a soft cloth to minimize potential water damage. If possible, leave cover off the battery compartment overnight or until completely dry. FCC ID: AZ489FT3797 Troubleshooting Problem Solution Radio is dead Reposition or charge battery pack. Battery does not charge If Charger Tray is used, make sure battery is positioned properly. See page xx. If using Charger Adapter, make sure the red LED on the adapter glows indicating correct charging status. Radio should be turned off when using Charger Adapter. Charge time will be longer if radio is left on. Message not Transmitted Make sure the Push-To-Talk button is completely pressed as you transmit. Reposition or charge battery pack. Message not Received Confirm radios have the same Channel and Interference Eliminator Code settings. Make sure Push-To-Talk is not inadvertently being pressed. Obstructions, operating indoors or in vehicles may interfere with communication. Change your location. Check to make sure volume is turned up. Hearing Other Conversations Check that your Interference Eliminator or noise on radio Code is set (Active settings are 1 - 38) Other users may be using channel - change channel to avoid congestion. Limited Talk Range Steel/concrete structures, heavy foliage and use in buildings and in vehicles will decrease range, check for clear line of sight to improve transmission. Wearing radio close to body such as in a pocket or on a belt will decrease range, change location of radio. FCC ID: AZ489FT3797 Heavy Static or interference Radios too close. Radios must be at least 5 feet apart. Increase your distance apart. Radios too far apart. Obstacles interfere with transmission. Talk range is up to two miles in clear unobstructed conditions. If the radio still doesn’t work properly contact your place of purchase or call Motorola product services at 1800-448-6686 Battery / Charger Safety Information : WARNING Do not replace or recharge batteries in a hazardous atmosphere. Sparking may occur while installing or removing batteries from the radio and chargers which could trigger an explosion. Charge batteries at about 77°F. Charging in cold temperatures (below 45°F) can result in electrolyte leakage and destroy the battery. Charging in hot temperatures (above 95°F) does not damage the battery, but reduced charge capacity will result. WARNING Do not dispose of batteries in fire. This could create a fire or explosion hazard. Also, improper use of batteries may create a fire or explosion. CAUTION • • • • To reduce risk of damage to electric plug and cord, pull by the plug rather than the cord when disconnecting the charger. Make sure cord is located so that it will not be stepped on, tripped over, or otherwise subjected to damage or stress. Do not operate charger with damaged cord or plug, replace them immediately. Do not operate charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped, or otherwise damaged in any way; contact place of purchase or call 1-800-448-6686. Do not expose chargers to rain or snow. However, if an extension cord must be used, make sure: • • • That pins and plug of extension cord are the same number, size and shape as those on the plug of the charger. That extension cord is properly wired and in good condition. That cord size is 18AWG for lengths of up to 100 feet, and 16AWG for lengths up to 150 feet. CAUTION • • • • Do not disassemble charger; contact place of purchase or call 1-800-448-6686 if charger is not functioning. Incorrect reassembly can result in electric shock or fire. To reduce risk of injury, charge only Motorola Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries. Other types of batteries may burst, causing personal injury and damage. Use of an attachment not sold or recommended by Motorola can result in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to personnel. To reduce risk of electric shock, unplug charger from outlet before cleaning. Turning off controls does NOT reduce this risk. For body worn operation, the antenna should be kept at least one inch from the body when transmitting. ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE/COMPATIBILITY Nearly every electronic device is susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI) if inadequately shielded, designed or otherwise configured for electromagnetic compatibility. • • Turn your radio OFF in any facilities where posted notices instruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF energy. Turn your radio off when on board aircraft when instructed to do so. They include fueling areas such as below deck on boats, fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities; areas where the air contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine. WARNING (use appropriate ANSI symbol) BLASTING CAPS AND AREAS • To avoid possible interference with blasting operations, turn your radio OFF near electrical blasting caps or in a “blasting area” or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio” . Obey all signs and instructions. WARNING (use appropriate ANSI symbol) FOR VEHICLES WITH AN AIR BAG • An air bag inflates with great force. Do not place objects, including portable or mobile twoway radios, in the area over the air bag or in the air bag deployment area. WHAT THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER: a) Defects or damage resulting from use of the Product in other than its normal and customary manner. b) Defects or damage from misuse, accident, liquid, or neglect. c) Defects or damage from improper testing, operation, maintenance, installation, alteration, modification, or adjustment. d) Breakage or damage to antennas unless caused directly by defects in material workmanship. e) A Product subjected to unauthorized Product modifications, disassemblies or repairs (including, without limitation, the addition to the Product of non-Motorola supplied equipment) which adversely affect performance of the Product or interfere with Motorola’s normal warranty inspection and testing of the Product to verify any warranty claim. f) Product which has had the serial number removed or made illegible. g) Rechargeable batteries if: 1) any of the seals on the battery enclosure of cells are broken or show evidence of tampering. 2) the damage or defect is caused by charging or using the battery in equipment or service other than the Product for which it is specified. h) Freight costs to the repair depot. i) A Product which, due to illegal or unauthorized alteration of the software/firmware in the Product, does not function in accordance with Motorola’s published specifications or the FCC type acceptance labeling in effect for the Product at the time the Product was initially distributed from Motorola. j) Scratches or other cosmetic damage to Product surfaces that does not effect the operation of the Product. k) Normal and customary wear and tear. PATENT AND SOFTWARE PROVISIONS: MOTOROLA will defend, at its own expense, any suit brought against the end user purchaser to the extent that it is based on a claim that the Product or parts infringe a United States patent, and MOTOROLA will pay those costs and damages finally awarded against the end user purchaser in any such suit which are attributable to any such claim, but such defense and payments are conditioned on the following: a) that MOTOROLA will be notified promptly in writing by such purchaser of any notice of such claim; b) that MOTOROLA will have sole control of the defense of such suit and all negotiations for its settlement or compromise; and c) should the Product or parts become, or in MOTOROLA’s opinion be likely to become, the subject of a claim of infringement of a Unites States patent, that such purchaser will permit MOTOROLA, at its option and expense, either to procure for such purchaser the right to continue using the Product or parts or to replace or modify the same so that it becomes non-infringing or to grant such purchaser a credit for the Product or parts as depreciated and accept its return. The depreciation will be an equal amount per year over the lifetime of the Product or parts as established by MOTOROLA. MOTOROLA will have no liability with respect to any claim of patent infringement which is based upon the combination of the Product or parts furnished hereunder with software, apparatus or devices not furnished by MOTOROLA, nor will MOTOROLA have any liability for the use of ancillary equipment or software not furnished by MOTOROLA which is attached to or used in connection with the Product. The foregoing states the entire liability of MOTOROLA with respect to infringement of patents by the Product or any parts thereof. Laws in the United States and other countries preserve for MOTOROLA certain exclusive rights for copyrighted MOTOROLA software such as the exclusive rights to reproduce in copies and distribute copies of such Motorola software. MOTOROLA software may be used in only the Product in which the software was originally embodied and such software in such Product may not be replaced, copied, distributed, modified in any way, or used to produce any derivative thereof. No other use including, without limitation, alteration, modification, reproduction, distribution, or reverse engineering of such MOTOROLA software or exercise of rights in such MOTOROLA software is permitted. No license is granted by implication, estoppel or otherwise under MOTOROLA patent rights or copyrights. VII. PRODUCT WARRANTY SCHEDULE: Spirit Radios: One (1) year Spirit Accessories: One (1) year. Rechargeable Batteries will be replaced during the applicable warranty period if: a) the battery capacity falls below 80% of rated battery capacity or, b) the battery develops leakage. EXHIBIT 8
