Releasing the Pager from theHolsterPress on the bottom tag with your fingerand slide the pager upward.(ii) 1Introduction and Getting StartedCongratulations on selecting the TLA 850alphanumeric pager from Multitone. Yourpager has all the features you expect of atop class product yet it retains simplicity ofoperation through the superbly designeduser interface and icon menu selection.This guide will describe the operation of theproduct and ensure that you receive the fullbenefits of paging with the TLA 850.On the back of your pager you will find thebattery cover. Press down on the centretab while sliding the battery cover outwardsto remove. Insert the battery into thespring end first so that the + symbol on thebattery is aligned with the moulded +symbol in the battery compartment.Carefully slide the cover back into position.Switching the Pager OnTo turn the pager on press and hold the •>button for one second. A short alert will

This is the standby screen:Standby ScreenStatus and Operating SymbolsThe standby screen shows the current timeand date. It also shows if there are unreadmessages, whether audible or vibrate alertis selected and, if appropriate, gives lowbattery and out-of-range warnings bydisplaying the following symbols:Status Symbols14:26 23.03.983From the standby screen press •> to enterthe pager options screen. 4To turn the pager off press •> to show thepager options screen and then press < or >several times until the symbol isflashing. Press •> and the display willshow the symbol plus a flashing ?.Press •> again to turn the pager off.Setting the Time and DateThe standby screen will normally show thetime and date. To set the current time anddate press •> once to display the pageroptions and then press < or > several timesuntil the symbol flashes. Press •> todisplay the time function edit screen.Time Function ScreenThe clock symbol will flash. To set theclock press •> and the clock symbol will5appear with 12 or 24 hour mode indicated.The hour will flash and the correct valuemay be selected by pressing either < or >.Once the hour is correct press •> and thetens of minutes will flash.Press < or > until the correct number isshown and then press •>.Press < or > until the correct number isshown and then press •> to set theminutes.The date is set with the same method.5:27 pm 23.03.98125:27 pm 23.03.98125:29 pm 23.03.9812
6Once the display shows the correct timeand date the 12 or 24 hour mode can beselected by pressing the < or > buttons tochange as required.Press and hold •> for one second to returnthe pager to the standby screen.Setting the Pager AlarmThe pager has a daily alarm feature and itmay be set by pressing the •> to show thepager options and then selecting the symbol using the < or > buttons.Press the •> to display the alarm optionsscreen.To turn the alarm on press < or > until the symbol shows and the time that thealarm is set to sound is displayed.17:27 pm 23.03.98247To turn the alarm off press < or > until the symbol shows and the alarm time isturned off.To change the alarm time press •> and thehour will flash. Press < or > to change thenumbers and when the correct value is setpress •> and the tens of minutes will flash.Press < or > to change the numbers andwhen the correct value is shown press •>.Press < or > until the minutes display iscorrect and then press •> for one second toreturn to the standby screen.07:00
8The display will show the symbolindicating that the alarm is set. When thealarm time is reached the standby screenwill show the symbol flashing and thealert will sound for eight seconds. Pressingany button within the eight second periodwill stop the alert.Selecting the Pager AlertTo set the alert on the pager press •> toshow the pager options and then press < or> several times until the symbol isflashing.Press •> to display the alert options screenwhich allows you to select the type of alertthat the pager produces when a call isreceived. The pager has nine possible alert9settings. These are numbered 0 for Noalert, 1 for Vibrate alert and 2 to 8 for theseven audible alerts. Press < or > tochange the alert and the pager gives you asample of the alert.To stop the alert press any button.If the vibrate alert is required then pressthe < or > until the symbol is displayedand the pager will vibrate for one second.The pager will now vibrate discreetly whena call is received.Once the desired alert has been selectedpress •> for one second to return to thestandby screen. In the standby screen thepager will now show the symbol if theaudible alert has been selected.The will be displayed if the vibrate alerthas been selected and will be displayedif the no alert option is selected.
10It is also possible to toggle rapidly betweenaudible and no alert by pressing andholding the •> button for three seconds.Receiving a MessageWhen receiving a message your pager willeither alert you audibly or vibrate asselected. The alert will continue for eightseconds or until you acknowledge receiptof the message by pressing any of thebuttons on the front of the pager. Thereceived message will also be displayedduring this initial alert. If you are away fromyour pager the alert will continue for eightseconds after which the symbol willbe shown to indicate you have an unreadmessage. A reminder alert will soundevery five minutes during the following hour.To display the message press the > button.If the message length exceeds one screenyou can scroll through to the end of the11message by pressing the •> button. A !symbol marks the end of each message.Each message is time and date stampedwhen received. This information cansubsequently be seen when the messagesare reviewed.Reviewing Stored MessagesWhen the pager has received a newmessage the standby display will show the symbol. To scroll through receivedmessages starting with the newestmessage press >. To read a particularmessage select it using < or > and if themessage occupies more than one screenpressing •> allows subsequent screens tobe viewed.To return to the standby screen at any timepress •> for one second.Once the pager has received 32 messagesits memory will be full and the standby
12screen will show the symbol. If a newmessage is received when the pagermemory is full then the oldest message willbe deleted. However, if there are no readmessages then the oldest unread messagewill be deleted.When the end of message block has beenviewed press •> to enter the messageoptions screen which contains themessage timestamp.Archiving MessagesArchive messages by transferring them tothe pager archive store. To do this press >followed by < or > several times to selectthe message to be archived and then viewthe complete message by pressing •> sothat the !!!!! symbol is seen.Press •> again to enter the message optionscreen and press < or > until the 13symbol is flashing. Press •> and thedisplay will show the symbol plus aflashing ?. Press •> to transfer themessage to the archive memory. If thearchive memory is full the symbol willflash and a message must be deleted fromthe archive memory before a new one canbe archived.Reviewing Archived MessagesTo view the contents of the archivemessage memory starting with the mostrecent message press the •> twice. Press< or > to scroll through the messages. Toview a long message press •> to readsubsequent screens.Deleting MessagesTo delete messages from either the pagermessage or archive memories first selectthe message to be deleted using < or > and
14then read the message using the •> button.When the last screen of the message isdisplayed press •> and press < or > until symbol is flashing. Press •> and thedisplay will show the symbol plus aflashing ?. Press •> to delete themessage.Deleting All MessagesThe pager message memory (but not thearchive store) may be completely erased bypressing •> to show the pager options andthen pressing either the < or > until the symbol is flashing. Press •> again and thedisplay will show the symbol plusflashing ?. Press •> to delete all of themessages.Timed OffThe pager may be switched off and on atpreset times (e.g. overnight).15To set the off and on times press •> whenin the standby screen and then press either< or > until the symbol is flashing.Press •> then press the < or > until the symbol is flashing. Then press •> todisplay the timed off edit screen.To disable the timed off feature press < or >until the off and on times are not shown.To enable the timed off feature press < or >until the off and on times are shown.The off and on times may be set bypressing •> to select the hours or minutesand < or > to adjust the values. Once thedesired times are displayed press •> forone second to return to the pager standbydisplay and the symbol will showindicating that the timed off feature isactive.
16Reviewing Information ServiceMessagesThe Information services menu is reachedby pressing the < button when in thestandby screen. Each enabled service hasa number symbol.Press < or > until the number symbol of thethe service you require is flashing thenpress •> to display the service message.To review other messages received on thesame service, press < or > until therequired message is displayed.The ‘history depth’ of each service hasbeen programmed at manufacture tooptimise the memory allocation for theservices provided.To return to the information services menupress •> repeatedly until the informationservice menu is displayed.To archive an information service messageuse the same method as described forarchiving messages.Caring for your PagerProtect your pager from strong magneticfields, liquids, extreme temperatures andlong periods exposed to strong sunlight.Clean the exterior of your pager using aclean, soft, non-abrasive cloth. Ifnecessary, dampen cloth with water only.Fault-FindingIf your pager appears to have a faultplease check the following:•Is the pager switched on?•Is the battery dead?•Is the battery fitted correctly?•Is the +ve sign on the battery alignedwith the moulded +ve sign in the batterycompartment?17
