The5972CustomerDisplayhasinternalPowerUpDiagnosticsthat
occursoonafterpower‐uporifaResetDisplaycommandisreceived
fromthehostsoftware.
Whenthehardwareispowereddown,allregistersandmemoryare
lost.Norecoveryispossible.
ThePowerUpDiagnosticsincludethefollowingtests:
• Micro‐controllertest
• ExternalcharacterPROMtest(VFDonly)
• PixelNumberDisplay
Micro-controller Test
Forserialcommunications,theCTSlineissetinaMarkingcondition
(negativevoltage)atthestartofthetest.ForVFDparallel
communications,theBusylineissetactiveatthestartofthetest.The
firsttestistheMicro‐controllertestwhichchecksoperationatthe
Micro‐controller.
Ifanerrorisdiscovered,testinghalts,andthefirmwarebegins
executingaforeverdonothingloop.Noresponseissenttothehost.If
theMicro‐controllerTestpasses,theCTSandBusylineexception
conditionsarelifted.
External Memory Test Character (VFD Only)
AseparatetestisperformedontheexternalcharacterPROM,ifit
exists.ThePROMstatusisnotedandsavedforterminalretrievallater
usingtheResetcommand.
Ifanerrorisdiscovered,allcharactersetsstoredinthePROMare
consideredinvalid,andanycommandreceivedattemptingtoswitchto
oneofthesecharactersetsistreatedasaninvalidcommandand
ignored.

capabilitytodetermineifitpassesthispixeltest.Youmustvisually
examinethedisplayforanypixelfailure.

commandbyteisreceivedimmediately,thefirmwarewaitsforeverif
needbeandusesthenextreceivedbyte(s)tocompletethecommand.
Note: Eachcommandconsistsofatleasttwobytes.Thefirstbyte
(0x1B)isacommandidentifierindicatingthenextbyte(s)isa
commandbyte.Thecommandbytemaybefollowedbyparameter
ordatabytesdependingonthecommand.AlsonotethattheESC
charactercanbedisplayedbyusingtheDisplayESCCharacter
command.

commandcausesthefirmwaretoblankorturnofftheRetail
Display.Displaydatacanbeprocessedwhilethedisplayisinthe
LowPowerState,butitdoesnotappearuntiltheLowPowerState
ischanged.Thedisplayedcharactersarepreservedsothatupon
leavingtheLowPowerState,thedisplayisrestored.Toleavethe
LowPowerState,oneoftheotherstatecommandsmustbe

Servicing the Display
Warning: Before servicing the equipment plug your safety strap
into a proper grounding outlet. Failure to do so could damage the
equipment.
Normal Operation
Onpower‐up,theunitdisplaysthefirmwarepartnumberfor2
seconds,thenlightsallpixelsfor2seconds,thengoesblankandawaits
commandsfromthehost.

Servicing the VFD or LCD
Iftheunitstilldoesnotperformproperly,youneedtoreplacethe
display.Beforedisassembly,verifyifyourmodelhasthelabelingand
serialnumbersindicatedontherearofthecoverofthedisplayoron
thebottomofthecabinet.Thiscovermustberetainedwhenreplacing
thedisplay.
Donotreplacethiscabinetwithanon‐serializedcover.
Caution: Becarefulnottodamagescrewholesorcableswhen
replacingthedisplay.
Ifyouarereplacingthedisplayhavingaserializedcoverproceedas
follows:

3. Disconnecttheboardfromthe24‐positionconnector.
4. ReinstallanewPCboard.
5. Routethecable.
VFD:Pullthecabledownsothestrainreliefbecomesflushwith
thehousing.
LCD:Routethecablethroughthestrainreliefguideslocatedinthe
cabinet.

6. Replacethecoverandsecureitwithcabinetscrews(2).
7. ReassemblethefaultyboardandmailittoNCRCustomerServices
forrepair.
Note: Ifyouarereplacinganon‐serializedunit,youmayremoveall
screws(4)ordisassemblethedisplayinwhatevermethodiseasiestfor
you.
Cleaning the Display
Removepowerfromtheunitbeforecleaning.
Whencleaningisrequired,asoftclothdippedinamilddetergentcan
beusedtocleanthecabinet.Onlyadampclothisrequiredsothatno
moisturecanenterthecabinet.Neverspraythecleanerdirectlyonto
theunit.Careshouldbetakennottoscratchthelensduringcleaning.
Note: NopreventivemaintenanceisrequiredtomeettheServiceCalls
perMachineperYearrequirement.
