NoWiresNeededPage 12 of 41 11 Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card User manual2 Wireless LAN basicsWireless Local Area Network systems (WLANs) offer a great numberof advantages over a traditional, wired system. WLANs are moreflexible, easier to setup and manage and more cost effective thantheir wired equivalence.Using radio frequency (RF) technology, WLANs transmit and receivedata through the air, minimizing the need for wired connections. Thus, WLANs combine data connectivity with user mobility, and, through simplified configuration, enable movable LANs.Through wireless LANs, users can access shared informationwithout looking for a place to plug in and network administrators canset up or augment networks without installing or moving wires.Wireless LANs offer the following productivity, convenience and costadvantages over traditional wired networks:• Mobility - WLANs can provide LAN users with access toreal-time information anywhere in their organization. Thismobility supports productivity and service opportunities notpossible with wired networks.• Installation Speed and Simplicity - Installing a WLAN is fastand easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable throughwalls and ceilings.• Installation Flexibility - Wireless technology allows thenetwork to go where wires cannot go.• Reduced Cost-of-Ownership - After an initial investment inwireless LAN hardware, overall installation expenses andlife-cycle costs will be significantly lower than is the casewith wired networks. Long-term cost benefits are mostsignificant in dynamic environments requiring frequentmoves, additions and changes.
NoWiresNeededUser manual 11 Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card Page 13 of 41• Scalability - WLANs can be configured in a variety oftopologies to meet the needs of specific applications andinstallations. Configurations are easily changed and rangefrom peer-to-peer networks suitable for a small number ofusers to full infrastructure networks of thousands of usersroaming over a broad area.
