OWNER’S GUIDE Part Number: 4280373 REV A © 7/2011 KIA MOTORS AMERICA REMOTE START REMOTE START OWNER’S GUIDE INTRODUCTION Congratulations on your purchase of a Kia Remote Start System featuring PowerCode Technology. This easy-touse manual details the operating instructions and benefits of the Remote Start System. Should you have questions or concerns regarding this system that this manual does not address, please contact your local Kia dealer. Press for Progressive Car Find x1= 5 Soft Chirps x2= 5 Louder Chirps x3= 5 Full Volume Chirps Red L.E.D. flash with every button press to confirm proper operation and a good battery. During Remote Start operation, press 1 time to activate the Rear Defroster feature. Press and hold for Personal Protection Alarm. Caution: Do not remote start a vehicle in an enclosed environment (i.e. closed garage). Prolonged operation of a motor vehicle in an enclosed environment can cause a harmful build-up of Carbon Monoxide. Carbon Monoxide is harmful to your health. Exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide can cause headaches, dizziness or in extreme cases unconsciousness and/or death. Do not leave children or animals unattended in a vehicle while using the remote start function. FCC COMPLIANCE This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules and with RSS-210 of Industry Canada. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. This device may not cause harmful interference. 2. This device must accept any interference received, including any interference that may cause undesired operation. Warning! Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user’s authority to operate STEERING WHEEL / STALK OF / PANEL FEATURES AND BENEFITS THE SYSTEM • Remote Start - Start your vehicle with the press of a button. Preheat or precool the vehicle’s interior. • Remote Keyless Entry - Unlock the vehicle’s doors and tailgate with the factory Smart key transmitter during Remote Start operation. • Rear Defroster - Activate the Rear Defroster feature during Remote Start operation. • Personal Protection Alarm - The red “panic” button on your remote control transmitter triggers the vehicle’s horn and hazard or parking lights to scare away a potential attacker. • Progressive Car Find - Helps locate your vehicle in a parking lot. STEERING WHEEL OPERATION / STALK / PANEL REMOTE CONTROL Your Remote Control Transmitter The remote control transmitter controls the Remote Start, Rear Defroster, Personal Protection Alarm and Progressive Car Find. Personal Protection Alarm with RPS (Real Panic Sound) The remote control panic feature helps draw attention to your vehicle and yourself in a threatening situation. Press and hold the button on your remote control transmitter for 3 seconds to activate the panic feature. The horn and hazard or parking lights will sound/flash in random pulses for 30 seconds. Pressing the button a second time will turn off the panic feature. Progressive Car Find The remote control car find feature can help locate your vehicle in a dark or crowded parking lot. Pressing the button on your remote control transmitter will chirp the horn 5 times. Subsequent presses of the button within 5 seconds of the first press will activate the car find feature again; sounding the horn slightly louder on the second and third activations and then at a constant sound level (equal to the third activation). Important Note: The factory Smart key transmitters will function during Remote Start operation, except the panic feature. Important Note: The outside door handle lock/unlock buttons will NOT function during Remote Start operation. Important Note: If the driver’s door is unlocked, opened and closed with the factory Smart key transmitter outside the vehicle, a warning chime may be heard. This is normal and not cause for concern. STEERING PANEL USING THE WHEEL REMOTE/ STALK START / FUNCTION Starting Your Vehicle The remote start function is activated by pressing the button 2 times within 3 seconds on your remote control transmitter. The system will check the vehicle to ensure that it is safe to start and if all safety parameters are correct, the engine will start within 15 seconds and run for up to 15 minutes. Press and hold the button again for 3 seconds to turn off the vehicle. Remote Start Safety Features For safety and security reasons, the system will fail to start and chirp the horn accordingly or shut down the engine during remote start operation if any of the following occur: Chirps Safety Feature Hood opened Valet/Service Mode engaged Hatch opened Brake Pedal pressed (Not applicable during remote start operation) Any door opened (Not applicable during remote start operation) Gear selector moved from “Park” position or Start button pressed As a safety precaution, the vehicle will shut off if left unattended after 15 minutes. Important Note: Whenever the remote start function is activated, the system can take up to 15 seconds to start the engine. Important Note: If the system determines it is NOT safe to start the engine, it will abort the operation. STEERING WHEEL / STALK PANEL USING THE REMOTE START /FUNCTION Entering the Vehicle While it is Running via Remote Start Important Note: The outside door handle lock/unlock buttons will NOT function during Remote Start operation. 1. Press the button 1 time on the factory Smart key transmitter to unlock the driver’s door. 2. Press the button a second time within 4 seconds to unlock the remaining doors and tailgate. 3. Enter the vehicle with the factory Smart key transmitter. Wait 2-3 seconds for the flashing “KEY OUT” light on the instrument cluster to turn off. 4. Press the brake pedal and shift the gear selector into the desired gear as you normally would. 5. The remote start system disengages and the vehicle will operate normally, without the engine stopping. Important Note: If the Gear Select Lever is moved from the “Park” position before the flashing “KEY OUT” light turns off, the engine will shut down. To restart the engine; press and hold the brake pedal, move the gear select lever to the “Park” position and press the Start button on the dashboard. USING STEERING THE REMOTE WHEEL / STALK START /FUNCTION PANEL Pre-Heating or Pre-Cooling the Interior Before exiting the vehicle, set the temperature controls to the desired setting and operation. After the system starts the vehicle, the heater or air-conditioner will activate and heat or cool the interior to your setting. Using the Rear Defroster Feature This feature is activated by pressing the button on the remote control transmitter during remote start operation. The vehicle will confirm activation by flashing the hazard or parking lights one time and illuminating the Rear Defroster indicator on the dashboard. This feature is deactivated by pressing the button on the remote control transmitter a second time. The vehicle will confirm deactivation by flashing the hazard or parking lights one time and cancelling the Rear Defroster indicator on the dashboard. Note: The Rear Defroster feature can only be activated during remote start operation and it will remain on for the remaining remote start run time (up to 10 minutes) or until it is deactivated by the remote control transmitter. Note: If the vehicle’s windshield wipers are left on when the vehicle was last driven, the wipers will turn on if the remote start function is activated. To avoid damage to the wiper blades (i.e. due to heavy ice or snow accumulated on the windshield), it is a good idea to get in the habit of turning the vehicle’s windshield wipers off when parking the vehicle. USING VALET/SERVICE MODE STEERING WHEEL / STALK / PANEL Using Valet/Service Mode Valet/Service Mode is used to prevent the system from unexpectedly starting the engine while being serviced. The system will chirp the horn 3 times if an attempt is made to activate the remote start system. To Engage Valet/Service Mode: Turn the ignition to the ON position, by pressing the Start button on the dashboard 2 times with a factory Smart key transmitter inside the vehicle, without pressing the brake pedal. Once the ignition is turned on, press and hold the brake pedal and press the button 3 times within 5 seconds. The system will chirp the horn once with each transmitter button press and 3 additional times indicating the system has entered Valet/Service Mode. To Exit Valet/Service Mode (Return the system to its normal operating mode): Turn the ignition to the ON position, by pressing the Start button on the dashboard 2 times with a factory Smart key transmitter inside the vehicle, without pressing the brake pedal. Once the ignition is turned on, press and hold the brake pedal and press the button 3 times within 5 seconds. The system will chirp the horn once with each transmitter button press and 1 additional time indicating the system has exited Valet/Service Mode. Important Note: When taking your vehicle to the dealer for service, it is recommended that you inform the service personnel that your vehicle is equipped with a Remote Start System. CHANGING STEERING THE WHEEL REMOTE / STALK CONTROL / PANEL BATTERY Changing the Remote Control Transmitter Battery The 3-volt lithium battery (Model CR2032) supplied in your remote control transmitter should last approximately three years, depending on usage. When the battery begins to weaken, you will notice a decrease in range or the distance from the vehicle that your remote control will operate. Replacement batteries are available at local electronics stores. Follow the instructions below to change the remote control battery. 1. 1. Insert a small flat tip screwdriver into the slot on the bottom, right of the remote control. Twist the screwdriver to pry the remote control halves apart. 2. Remove the old battery and replace with a new one. Be sure to observe the (+) sign when inserting the new battery. The (+) sign must face downward. 3. Carefully snap the case halves back together, then test the remote control. Twist Here 2. Important Note: Recycle or dispose of the old battery according to your local laws or regulations.
