S001_EnSelecting fine audio equipment such as the unit you’ve just purchased is only the start of your musical enjoyment. Now it’s time to consider how you can maximize the fun and excitement your equipment offers. This manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association’s Consumer Electronics Group want you to get the most out of your equipment by playing it at a safe level. One that lets the sound come through loud and clear without annoying blaring or distortion-and, most importantly, without affecting your sensitive hearing.Sound can be deceiving. Over time your hearing “comfort level” adapts to higher volumes of sound. So what sounds “normal” can actually be loud and harmful to your hearing. Guard against this by setting your equipment at a safe level BEFORE your hearing adapts. To establish a safe level: • Start your volume control at a low setting.• Slowly increase the sound until you can hear it comfortably and clearly, and without distortion.Once you have established a comfortable sound level:• Set the dial and leave it there.Taking a minute to do this now will help to prevent hearing damage or loss in the future. After all, we want you listening for a lifetime. We Want You Listening For A Lifetime Used wisely, your new sound equipment will provide a lifetime of fun and enjoyment. Since hearing damage from loud noise is often undetectable until it is too late, this manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association’s Consumer Electronics Group recommend you avoid prolonged exposure to excessive noise. This list of sound levels is included for your protection.DecibelLevel Example30 Quiet library, soft whispers40Living room, refrigerator, bedroom away from traffic50 Light traffic, normal conversation, quiet office60 Air conditioner at 20 feet, sewing machine70 Vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, noisy restaurant80Average city traffic, garbage disposals, alarm clock at two feet.THE FOLLOWING NOISES CAN BE DANGEROUS UNDER CONSTANT EXPOSURE90Subway, motorcycle, truck traffic, lawn mower100 Garbage truck, chain saw, pneumatic drill120 Rock band concert in front of speakers, thunderclap140 Gunshot blast, jet plane180 Rocket launching padInformation courtesy of the Deafness Research Foundation. Recording0652EnRead this before recording on discThis section explains things you must know to recordonto a disc. Read it before attempting to record.Types of discYou can use DVD-RW and DVD-R discs to record video.DVD-RW discs• Ver 1.1/1.2 discs can be formatted for recording ineither of the two modes: the VR mode or the Videomode. Ver.1.0 discs can only be formatted forrecording in the VR mode.• High quality images and sound can be repeatedlyrecorded about 1,000 times.• A disc formatted in the VR mode can have as manyas 99 original titles and playlist titles each. Discsformatted in the Video mode can have up to 99original titles.DVD-R discs• Discs can only be recorded in the Video mode.• Discs can be recorded only once.• Up to 99 titles can be created. For more information on recording format, see“Recording format” (page 10).Notes on recording in the Video mode• The Video mode cannot be selected for Ver. 1.0DVD-RW discs.• The remaining available area on the disc decreasesas recording progresses. Additional contents canbe recorded in the remaining time area, but itcannot be overwritten into the recorded area.• To format a new DVD-RW in the Video mode, setthe automatic format feature to the Video mode.(See page 27.)Note• Should a power failure occur or should the AC cordplug be disconnected while recording, editing, initializing, finalizing or any other function, theprogram being recorded will be lost or the disc maynot be playable. Manufacturer cannot guaranteeagainst loss of program or disc should this occur.Chapter 6RecordingRecordingmodeXPSPLPEPRecording timeApprox. 60 minApprox. 120 minApprox. 240 minApprox. 360 minQualityCan record high qualityimages. Can record normalquality images.Quality deterioratesslightly, but recordingtime is longer.Recording time isprioritized over quality.Recording modesThere are 4 modes for recording on disc. Recordingtime and quality vary according to mode.• Recording time above is based on a 4.7GB disc. Please note that there is a trade-off between recordingtime and quality. The longer the possible recording time, the lower the recorded picture quality. You may wish totry recording different kinds of program in differentmodes to determine the combination of picture qualityand recording time that suits your needs. We recommend that the XP mode be used for recordingfast moving or action programs.Since DVD recording is performed using VBR (VariableBit Rate), recording time varies according to therecorded content. To know the correct recording time, stop recording andcheck the media information. (See page 35.)Note• Recording time can change for the followingreasons.- When image quality is poor as during poor TVreception.- When recording on a disc that has been editedbefore.- When the video is followed with recordings of stillimages or just audio. 2G00201A_En_52_62 2/12/05, 3:25 PM52

There are 3 types ofcopy-restriction signals: “Copy Free”, “Copy Never” and“Copy Once”.“Copy Free” (unrestricted recording)Land-based TV broadcasts and images you recordyourself with a video camera allow unrestricted record-ing. There are no restrictions on recording.“Copy Never” (recording prohibited)• Images that contain the recording prohibited signalcannot be recorded.• If the recording prohibited signal appears halfwaythrough an image you are recording, recording ispaused at that instant. When the recordingprohibited signal ends, recording resumes.• This unit incorporates a built-in copy guard.
