VENTILATIONSlots and openings in the cabinet back or bottomare provided for ventilation and to ensure reliableoperation of the unit and to protect it from overheating.These openings must not be blocked or covered.The openings should never be blocked by placingthe unit on a bed, sofa, rug, or other  similar surface.This unit should never be placed near or over aradiator or heat source. This unit should not beplaced in built-in installation such as a bookcase orrack unless proper ventilation is provided or themanufacturer's instructions have been adhered to.10. POWER SOURCESThis unit should be operated only from the type ofpower source indicated on the rating plate. If you arenot sure of the type of power supply to your home,consult your appliance dealer or local power com-pany. For units intended to operate from batterypower, or other sources, refer to the operatinginstructions.11. GROUNDING OR POLARIZATIONThis unit is equipped with a polarized alternating-current line plug (a plug having one blade wider thanthe other). This plug will fit into the power outlet onlyone way. This is a safety feature. If you are unableto insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversingthe plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact yourelectrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do notdefeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug If yourunit is equipped with a 3-wire grounding-type plug, aplug having a third (grounding) pin, this plug will onlyfit into a grounding-type power outlet. This too, is asafety feature. If you are unable to insert the pluginto the outlet, contact your electrician to replaceyour obsolete outlet.Do not defeat the safety purpose of the grounding-type plug.12. POWER-CORD PROTECTIONPower-supply cords should be routed so that theyare not likely to be walked on or pinched by itemsplaced upon or against them, paying particularattention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles,and the point where they exit from the appliance.13. LIGHTNINGTo protect your unit from a lightning storm, or whenit is left unattended and unused for long periods oftime, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnectthe antenna or cable system. This will preventdamage to the unit due to lightning and power linesurges.14. POWER LINESAn outside antenna system should not be located inthe vicinity of overhead power lines or other electriclight or power circuits, or where it can fall into suchpower lines or circuits. When installing an outsideantenna system, extreme care should be taken tokeep from touching such power lines or circuits, ascontact with them might be fatal.15. OVERLOADINGDo not overload wall outlets and extension cords, asthis can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.16. OBJECT AND LIQUID ENTRYDo not push objects through any openings in this unitas they may touch dangerous voltage points or shortout parts that could result in fire or electric shock.Never spill or spray any type of liquid into the unit.17. OUTDOOR ANTENNA GROUNDINGIf an outside antenna or cable system is connectedto the unit, be sure the antenna or cable system isgrounded to provide some protection against voltagesurges and built-up static charges. Section 810 ofthe National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70,provides information with respect to proper groundingof the mast and supporting structure, grounding ofthe lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size ofgrounding conductors, location of antenna dischargeunit, connection to grounding electrodes, andrequirements for the grounding electrode.18. SERVICINGDo not attempt to service this unit yourself asopening or removing covers may expose you todangerous voltage or other hazards. DAMAGE REQUIRING SERVICEUnplug this unit from the wall outlet and referservicing to qualified service personnel under thefollowing conditions:a. When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged.b. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have falleninto the unit.c. If the unit has been exposed to rain or water.d. If the unit does not operate normally byfollowing the operating instructions. Adjust onlythose controls that are covered by the operatinginstructions, as an improper adjustment ofother controls may result in damage and willoften require extensive work by a qualifiedtechnician to restore the unit to its normaloperation.e. If the unit has been dropped or the cabinet hasbeen damaged.f. When the unit exhibits a distinct change inperformance, this indicates a need for service.20. REPLACEMENT PARTSWhen replacement parts are required, be sure theservice technician uses replacement parts specifiedby the manufacturer or those that have the samecharacteristics as the original parts.Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire, electricshock or other hazards.21. SAFETY CHECKUpon completion of any service or repairs to thisunit, ask the service technician to perform safetychecks to determine that the unit is in properoperating condition.22. HEATThe product should be situated away from heatsources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, orother products (including amplifiers) that produce heat.23. 5ENGLISH MOISTURE CONDENSATIONDO NOT OPERATE THIS VCR FOR AT LEAST TWOOR THREE HOURS WHEN MOISTURE IN THE AIRCONDENSES ON THE VCR.WHAT IS MOISTURE CONDENSATION?When a cold liquid is poured into a glass, for example,water vapor in the air will condense on the surface of theglass. This is called moisture condensation.MOISTURE WILL CONDENSE ON THE UNIT IN THEFOLLOWING CASES:•When you move this VCR from a cold to a warm place.•After heating a cold room or under extremely humidconditions.WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE THE ABOVE CONDITIONS,Plug the power cord into an AC outlet, press the POWERbutton to turn on and leave the unit at room temperatureuntil moisture condensation disappears.Depending on the surrounding conditions, this may taketwo or three hours.•When you finish operating the VCR, always unloadthe cassette and turn off the power.•When you leave your home for a long time, unplug theAC power cord.•To protect the VCR from a lightning storm, unplug theAC power cord from the wall outlet and disconnect theantenna. POWER SOURCETO USE AC POWER SOURCEUse the AC polarized line cord provided for operation onAC. Insert the AC cord plug into a standard 120V 60Hzpolarized AC outlet.NOTES:1. Never connect the AC line cord plug to other than thespecified voltage (120V 60Hz). Use the attachedpower cord only.2. If the polarized AC cord does not fit into a non-polarizedAC outlet, do not attempt to file or cut the blade. It is theuser’s responsibility to have an electrician replace theobsolete outlet.PRECAUTIONS LOCATION AND HANDLE•If you cause a static discharge when touching the VCR,and the VCR fails to function, simply unplug the unitfrom the wall outlet, wait 10 minutes and plug it backin. The VCR should return to normal operation.•Avoid extreme heat or cold. (41˚F/5˚C-104˚F/40˚C)•Do not place the VCR on or near appliances whichmay cause electromagnetic interference, e.g. TV,speakers, etc. Doing so may cause erratic operationof the VCR including picture and/or sound distortion ornoise.•Avoid extreme moisture and dust.•The ventilation holes prevent overheating. Do notblock or cover these holes. Especially avoid coveringthe holes with soft materials such as cloth or paper.•Do not insert fingers or any other objects into thecassette loading slot. Do not spray cleaner or waxdirectly on the VCR or use forced air to remove dust.•Avoid places subject to strong vibration. Use in ahorizontal (flat) position only.•Keep the VCR away from flower vases, sinks, etc.If liquids should be spilled into the VCR, seriousdamage will result. Connect the antenna to theVCR properly.•For better quality recording, an indoor antenna or a telescopic antenna is not recommended. The use of anoutdoor type antenna is required.•If you are not sure about the connection, please refer to qualified service personnel.If you are using an antenna system, follow the instructions. If you are a cable (CATV) subscriber,skip ahead topage 12 for the proper connections. ANTENNA TO VCR CONNECTIONThe VCR must be connected "between" the antenna and the TV. First, disconnect the antenna from the TV and connectit to the VCR. Then connect the VCR to the TV. Below are 3 common methods of connecting an antenna system to aVCR. 12Many cable companies offer services permitting reception of extra channels including pay or subscription channels.This VCR has an extended tuning range and can be tuned to most cable channels without using a cable companysupplied converter box, except for those channels which are intentionally scrambled. 13This VCR cannot receive scrambled programs since it does not contain a descrambler. In order to receive scrambledprograms, your existing descrambler must be used. Descrambler boxes are available from cable companies. Consultyour local cable company for more information concerning connection to their descrambler equipment. There aremany ways to connect your VCR to a cable system. 22The video heads are the means by which the VCRreads pictures from the tape during playback. In theunlikely event that the heads become dirty enough to beclogged, no picture will be played back. This can easilybe determined if, during playback of a known good tape,there is good sound, but no picture (picture is extremelysnowy). If this is the case, use a high quality headcleaning system or have them cleaned professionally.NOTES: •Video heads may eventually wear out andshould be replaced when they fail to produceclear pictures.•To help prevent video head clogging, useonly good quality VHS tapes. Discard wornout tapes.VIDEO HEAD CLOGGINGVIDEO HEAD CLEANINGVideo head cleaning is needed when the playbackpicture becomes unclear. This signifies that the headsare getting dirty and can occur when playing poor qualityor damaged tapes.
