3 4Keypad LayoutCONTROL LOCATIONSGETTING STARTEDOverview & Battery InstallationGetting Started-OverviewThis is what MASTERCONTROL™ RF10 is all about!The RF10 is designed to operate up to 8 differentAudio/Video Components and is pre-programmed tooperate virtually all brands of TV, VCR, DVD and CDPlayers, Cable Set Top Boxes, Satellite Receivers, TiVoand other DVRs, Audio Components, Tape Decks,Multimedia PCs, XM Radio, Ipod, X-Box, Lighting Controlsand other custom installation products. It also offers animpressive lineup of special features designed to provideyou with many time-saving conveniences and enhanceyour overall entertainment experience. However, westrongly recommend that you fully complete all of theBasic Setup steps before proceeding to customize yourRF10 with any of the special advanced features.Battery InstallationThe very first step is to insertthe four AAA batteries thatare included in the packageinto the battery compartmentlocated in the back of theremote. Just press the taband lift off the cover. Pleasebe sure to insert the batteriescorrectly as you see in thediagram. Remember, there is a positive and negative end to each battery and youcan tell by the + (positive) and– (negative) symbols. Oncethe batteries are correctlyinstalled, replace the cover.Now you’re ready to start!++++----
The SHIFT ButtonPress SHIFT to access a second command for eachCOMPONENT button. While RF10 is in SHIFT mode, thedisplay on the LCD screen will blink. The buttons labeledwith white text on the case, indicate just some of the sec-ondary commands available when you are in SHIFT mode.Note: If you don’t press a button within 10 seconds, the RF10 will exit SHIFTmode and return to normal operation.NOTE: The AUDIO COMPONENT has a unique SHIFT functionality. It cansend input commands to you’re A/V Surround Sound receiver by pressingthe COMPONENT buttons after SHIFT is selected.The LIGHT ButtonThe fully backlit keypad makes the RF10 easy to use in the dark or dim lighting conditions. Simply press theLIGHT button to backlight all the keypad buttons and LCD screen. To turn off the backlight, press the LIGHTbutton again, or just wait ten seconds (the backlight automatically shuts itself off). Lights out!Try it out!Activating Component Commands –Simple, Easy, IntuitiveOnce you’ve programmed RF10 for your Components, allyou have to do to operate a specific Component is pressthe desired COMPONENT button. 7 8Pre-Programmed Code MethodBASIC SETUPBASIC SETUPPre-Programmed Code MethodCOMPONENTBUTTONSELECTBUTTONBasic Setup - OverviewThere are three ways to program the RF10:> The Pre-Programmed Code Method> The Pre-Programmed Auto-Search Method> The Learning MethodThe Pre-Programmed Code Method allows you to setup allthe buttons at once, so it’s the fastest and easiest of thethree methods. The Auto-Search Method scans through allthe codes in the RF10, one at a time. The Learning Methodallows you to transfer functions from other remotes (old ornew), one button at a time.Pre-Programmed Code MethodSTEP 1: The pre-programmed 3-digitcodes are found in the back ofthis Manual on page 38. Thecodes are listed by Componentcategory (i.e., TV, VCR, DVD,etc.), then by brand name. Forinstance, if you want to locatea code for a Sony TV, firstlocate the TV category, andthen look for the Sony brand.Once you have located the3-digit code (or in some cases,several code numbers) for theComponent that you want tooperate with your RF10, writethem ALL down on a piece ofnote paper. It’s important thatyou write down all the codesbecause only one code is goingto work for you.STEP 2: Now, turn on the Component youwant to program… let’s say yourTV to start. Look up your TV’smanufacturer setup code fromyour reference list.STEP 3: Press and hold the COMPONENT button (in thiscase TV) and SELECT button atthe same time for approximately3 seconds. The LCD screen willdisplay “SET” signaling that youare now in Setup mode andready to program your TV. IMPORTANT:You now have 30 seconds toperform the next step while you are inSETUP mode. If you don’t press a buttonwithin 30 seconds, SET will disappearfrom the screen, signaling that you haveexited setup mode and you will need tostart over.
910Pre-Programmed Code MethodBASIC SETUPBASIC SETUPPre-Programmed Code MethodNOTE: If the Component fails to turn offafter you have entered all the codenumbers listed for your brand, you canuse either the Auto-Search Method onPage 11 or the Learning Method onPage 13.STEP 4:Point the RF10 toward theComponent you want to program,(in this example, TV), and punch inthe 3-digit code that you wrotedown for that specific Component.Use the Number buttons 0-9 on theremote to punch in the code. If the3-digit code number that you justpunched in is correct, theComponent will turn off. If theComponent does not turn off,continue entering code numbersfrom your list until the Componentturns off. Some brands haveseveral possible code numbers.STEP 5:When the Component turns off,press the ON button to turn theComponent back on. Now youcan test the Volume and Channelbuttons (for TV), or PLAY andSTOP (for VCR and DVD) to makesure they all work. If any of thebuttons do not work properly, youneed to find a new correct code.For example, maybe your Sony TVturned off with code number 147,but the volume controls did notwork properly. If this is the case,try the next code number listed forthat Component until you find aperfect match.STEP 6:Once you have found the rightcode, save the code number bypressing the Component buttonyou just programmed (in this caseTV) one more time. The LCDscreen will blink “SAVED” twotimes, signaling that the codenumber has been successfullysaved, and then return to normaloperating mode (in this case TV).NOW, PROGRAM THE REST OF YOURCOMPONENTS BY REPEATING STEPS2 THROUGH 6. IN MOST SYSTEMS,YOU CAN FINISH BASIC SETUP INJUST A FEW MINUTES AND PUT ALLYOUR OLD REMOTES AWAY.CODEDISPLAYONBUTTONVOLUMEBUTTONSTOPBUTTONPLAYBUTTON

Each time the UPARROW button is pressed, thecode will count up one codenumber and send a POWER OFFsignal. When the correct codeis sent out, the component willturn off.sure they all work. If any of thebuttons do not work properly,you need to find a new correctcode. So, continue pressing theUP ARROW button until you finda code that makes the VOLUMEand PLAY buttons work properly.STEP 5:Once you have found the rightcode, save the code number bypressing the Component buttonyou just programmed (in thiscase TV) one more time. TheLCD screen will blink “SAVED”two times, signaling that the codenumber has been successfullysaved, and then return to normaloperating mode.STEP 4:When the Component turns off,press the ON button to turn theComponent back on. Now youcan test the Volume and Channelbuttons (for TV), or PLAY andSTOP (for VCR and DVD) to makeSTEP 2:Press and hold both theCOMPONENT (in this case TV) andSELECT buttons for approximatelythree seconds. The LCD screenwill display "SET" signaling thatyou are now in Setup mode andready to program your TV.Pre-Programmed Auto-Search MethodThe Auto-Search Method is a way you can scan throughother codes in the table to find the right code for yourcomponent.TVCOMPONENTSELECTBUTTONUP ARROWBUTTONONBUTTONIMPORTANT:You now have 30 seconds toperform the next step while you are inSETUP mode. If you don't press a buttonwithin 30 seconds, SET will disappear fromthe screen, signaling that you have exitedsetup mode and you will need to start over.NOTE: If you can’t find the right code aftertrying the UP ARROW button for 5 minutes,please try the Learning Method on Page 13.
COMPONENTBUTTONENTERBUTTONLearning MethodThe RF10 can actually ‘learn’ commands from other remotecontrols (old or new), one-button-at-a-time, so it will neverbecome obsolete. RF10 is the last remote you’ll ever need!Just follow these simple steps:STEP 1: Line-up the RF10 with the otherremote control, head-to-head,one or two inches apart.STEP 2: Press and hold both the desiredComponent button (in this caseTV) and the ENT (Enter) buttonfor approximately 3 seconds.The display on the LCD screenwill show LEARN, signaling thatyou are now in LEARN mode andready to ‘teach’ your RF10.IMPORTANT:You now have 30 seconds toperform the next step while you are inSETUP mode. If you don’t press a buttonwithin 30 seconds, SETUP will disappearfrom the screen, signaling that you haveexited LEARN mode and you will need tostart over.STEP 3:Press any button on the RF10that you want to teach a com-mand to. Once you press a but-ton, the top of the screen displaywill change from “LEARN” to“READY”.NOTE REGARDING SHIFT FUNCTIONS: You can teach a second additional command to abutton by pressing the SHIFT button,then pressing the button you wantto teach. Additionally, using theSHIFT button, you may teach commands to the COMPONENT buttons themselves at the AUDIOmode. Simply select the AUDIOcomponent in STEP 2, press SHIFT,and then the component buttonsyou want to teach.STEP 4: Press and hold the button on theother remote control that youwant to ‘teach’ to the RF10 untilthe LCD display on the RF10changes to either “GOOD” or“FAIL”. It will then change to“READY”. If the “GOOD” labelappears on top of the display, youwere successful. Now, continue to teach the RF10any other commands from yourother remotes by repeating STEPS3 and 4 until the RF10 has learnedall the buttons you want.If the “FAIL” label appears on topof the display, try ‘teaching’ thesame button to the RF10 onceagain by repeating STEPS 3 and 4.13 14Learning MethodBASIC SETUPBASIC SETUPLearning Method
15 16Learning MethodBASIC SETUPBASIC SETUPTransmitting (Busy Signal) IconSTEP 5: Once you have completedteaching all the buttoncommands to the RF10, saveyour work and return to normaloperation by pressing both theCOMPONENT button youpressed in STEP 2 and theENT (Enter) button at the sametime. The remote will respondby flashing SAVED on the displaytwice, then return to normaloperating mode.NOTE: Test all your new commands.If any of them don’t work, try theLearning Method again, followingthese suggestions:• Move to another room. Plasma TVs, sunlight, halogen or quartz lighting can interfere with the learning process.• Even though the old remote seems to be working fine, put in fresh alkaline batteries.• Gradually vary the distance between the remote controls.Try 1”, 2” and so on, up to 4 feet.• Try tapping the button on your old remote instead of pressing and holding it during the learning process.Some additional Information regarding the Learning Process:• Learned functions override any existing pre-programmed functions on the remote control.• All buttons can be learned except for the PAGE, MAIN and LIGHT buttons.• Learned functions are automatically erased when a new function is learned on the same button.• Learned functions are retained even after a different Setup Code Number is programmed into the remote.• To return to an original pre-programmed function, a learned function must be erased.CHILD LOCK FEATUREThis ‘child-lock’ feature prevents the unauthorized use ofthe remote control by children. It blocks all operations ofthe remote control.To Activate:Press the +10 and ENT (Enter) buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. The LCD will blink “LOCK” three times and thendisplay “LOCK”.To Return to Normal Operation:Press the +10 and ENT (Enter) buttons simultaneously againfor 3 seconds. The LCD will display the last use mode.Transmitting (Busy Signal) Icon When a command is being transmitted, an icon will appearin the far right side of the LCD screen. This indicates that asignal is being sent.This is particularly useful when settingup Macros, since it flashes with every step of a sequenceof commands.
17 18ADVANCED SETUPADVANCED SETUPCustomizing Your RF10 with Special Advanced FeaturesCustomizing Your RF10 with Special Advanced Features After you’ve finished all your basic setup, you can chooseto make operation easier by customizing the RF10 just theway you want, using the Special Advanced Setup Featuresdescribed in this section.Customizing Component Names on the LCD ScreenYou can easily edit or change the name of any of the eightCOMPONENT buttons on the LCD screen. For example, youcan rename AUX to “LIGHTS” or SAT to “DISH”, etc.Here’s how:STEP 1: Press and hold both the COMPONENT button you wantto rename and the MENU button at the same time forapproximately 3 seconds, untilthe word “EDIT” is displayed onthe LCD screen. This signalsthat you are now in EDIT mode.IMPORTANT:You now have 30 secondsto perform the next step while you arein EDIT mode. If you don’t press a button within 30 seconds, EDIT willdisappear from the screen, signalingthat you have exited EDIT mode andyou will need to start over.STEP 2: The current COMPONENT namewill then appear on the screen,with the first space/characterblinking on and off. Change thecharacter by using any of theNUMBER buttons. Each pressof the same NUMBER buttonselects the next character ofthat number’s group, as shownin the diagram below: STEP 3: Once the character you wantappears, move to the next spaceby pressing the Right ( ) cursorbutton. Use the Left ( ) cursorbutton to move the blinkingcharacter to the left. Use theDown ( ) cursor button todelete the currently blinkingcharacter.STEP 4: When you are finished editingthe COMPONENT name, pressthe COMPONENT button youpressed in STEP 1 to save thechanges. The RF10 will respondby flashing “SAVED” twice, thenautomatically return to normaloperating mode.Customizing Y our RF10 with Special Advanced Features
19 20MacroPowerTMSetupADVANCED SETUPADVANCED SETUPMacroPowerTMSetupMacroPower™ SetupMacroPower™is a unique feature that enables you to turnall of your Components ON or OFF, at the same time, simplywith the press of one button. We call that a “Macro”. What would normally take multiple remotes and buttonpushes, the RF10 can accomplish with the press of one button. In addition to the Power ON or OFF buttons, any ofthe Component buttons can be set to be Macro buttons aswell. Feel the power! To setup a Power ON macro button that will turn ON severalcomponents at the same time (for example, TV, VCR andCABLE), follow these easy steps:STEP 1: Press and hold both the ONbutton and the MUTE buttons atthe same time for approximately3 seconds, until the word“MACRO” is displayed on theLCD screen. This signals thatyou are now in MACRO Setupmode.IMPORTANT:You now have 30 secondsto perform the next step while you arein MACRO mode. If you don’t press abutton within 30 seconds, MACRO willdisappear from the screen, signalingthat you have exited MACRO Setupmode and you will need to start over.STEP 2: Press the first COMPONENTbutton you want to turn on (in this example, TV) and thenconfirm the command by pressing the ON button. Repeatthis step for all the other components in the order youwant them to turn on (in thisexample, VCR followed byCABLE). The LCD screenchanges to the MACRO step display for each command.(NOTE: Whenever a button is pressed, anotherMacro step is counted and displayed on thescreen.)NOTE: Don’t worry about the number of steps.Each macro button can store up to 50 steps, soyou are not likely to run out of steps!You can also program delays in between com-mands by pressing the (II) PAUSE button. Eachpress adds half a second to the delay.STEP 3: Once you have entered all thedesired Power On commands,press the CHANNEL ( ) UP button to save your MacroPowercommands. The RF10 willrespond by flashing “SAVED”twice, then automatically returnto normal operating mode.SETTING UP A POWER OFF OR A COMPONENT BUTTON ASMACRO:If you want to program macro commands for the OFF or one ofthe 8 component buttons, in STEP 1, simply press the buttonyou want to be a macro insteadof the ON button. For example,you can setup an AUDIO buttonto be a macro by pressing AUD(Audio) and MUTE for 3 seconds.Once the screen displays“MACRO”, press the button withthe command you want. Thencomplete and save the Macroby following STEP 3 as outlinedabove.PROGRAMMING A “PRESS & HOLD” MACRO: Another option for macro buttonsis to only send the macro commands if the button ispressed and held. This is setupby entering a delay as the firststep of the macro. The amount ofdelay determines how long theuser must press the buttonbefore the macro is sent. Theadvantage of this option is that anormal press of the COMPONENTbutton will simply switchComponents without sending themacro command.

In a moreadvanced system, the sound maycome from your audioComponent such as a SurroundSound Receiver or Home Theatresystem. So, first, you need toidentify which Component youwant to use in your system forsound.STEP 1:In a basic home entertainmentsystem, the sound may comefrom your TV. So, first, you need toidentify which Component youwant to use in your system forsound.STEP 2:Press and hold both the COMPONENT button you want toadd volume control to, such asDVD or VCR, and the SEL(Select) button for approximately3 seconds, until the word “SET”is displayed on the LCD screen.This signals that you are now inSimpleSound Setup mode.STEP 3:Press the VOL+ button. Thescreen will alternately blinkPUNCH and FROM in the display.Now, let’s setup SimpleSoundTM. Here’s how: STEP 4:Now, press the COMPONENTbutton for the component thathas the Volume control youwant (i.e., TV for systems usingthe TV speakers, AUDIO forsystems using Surround Soundreceivers). The screen displaywill flash “SAVED” twice toconfirm the command is saved,and the RF10 will automaticallyreturn to normal operatingmode. This sets up a group ofthree buttons (Volume Up,Volume Down, and MUTE) inone action!• VOL - Volume Up, Volume Down andMute•CH- Channel Up, Channel Down,Previous Ch and Channel (0-9)buttons.• PLAY - Play, Stop, Pause, Rewindand Fast Forward• VOD - Menu, Guide, Info, Exit, Up,Down,Left, Right, SelectSimply perform the steps above andfor step 3, press the first button listed inthe group and all buttons will beprogrammed.STEP 5:Repeat STEPS 2-4 until all yourother components (VCR, CABLE,CD, etc.) operate the volumeperfectly.SimpleSoundTM is a dynamic feature that gives you totalvolume control over all the Components in your system,even those without their own built-in volume control,such as TiVo, DVD and VCR... saving you the hassle andinconvenience of constantly needing to switch betweenComponent modes on the remote. With SimpleSoundTM,you can set the RF10’s volume control buttons to alwayscontrol the sound in your system, even when you’re inVCR or DVD mode, without switching back to AUDIO orTV. Even more exciting, SimpleSound¢‚ is what is calleda ‘Punch Through’ feature and is not limited strictly tovolume control. Click and enjoy!IMPORTANT: You now have 30 seconds to per-form the next step while you are in Setup mode.If you don’t press a button within 30 seconds,“SET” will disappear from the screen, signalingthat you have exited Setup mode and you willneed to start over.NOTE: The Punch Through feature is not limitedto volume and can also be applied to othergroups of buttons and functions. If any ofthe buttons do not work properly,you need to find a new correctcode. For example, maybe yourSony TV turned off with codenumber 147, but the volume con-trols did not work properly. Now youcan test the Volume andAfter you’ve finished customizing the RF10’s programming forseven primary components, and you did not use AUX, youcan take advantage of the AUX function to program an 8thcomponent, such as a second TV, VCR, or any otheraudio/video component that you may have in your system.AUXBUTTONNUMBERBUTTONSNOTE: Any component button can be setupto operate any type of component byfollowing these same steps. Simplysubstitute the desired component buttonin place of AUX in STEP 2.IMPORTANT: You now have 30 seconds toperform the next step while you are in Setupmode. If you don’t press a button within30 seconds, ”SET” will disappear from thescreen, signaling that you have exited Setupmode and you will need to start over.

This signalsthat you are now in setupmode.IMPORTANT:You now have 30 secondsto perform the next step while you arein SETUP mode. If you don’t press abutton within 30 seconds, SETUP willdisappear from the screen, signalingthat you have exited setup mode andyou will need to start over.STEP 2: Press the INFO button. When used in combination with the optionalPowerBlaster™, the RF10 becomes an amazing remotecontrol powerhouse that sends multi-directional RF (RadioFrequency) signals that pass through walls, doors andfloors – both indoors and outdoors. This changes everything! It enables you to controlComponents that are completely out-of-sight, up to 100’away. The PowerBlaster™ picks up RF10’s radio frequencysignals from any direction, regardless of distance, so RF10doesn’t need to be pointed directly at any Component. Justimagine – no more pointing! Now you can close yourentertainment center doors, hide your Components, and stillcontrol them with ease. Control outdoor speakers on yourpatio. Control your Components anywhere!One of the best things about this is — nothing has to bedone to the RF10 for this feature to work. Every time youpress a button on the RF10, it sends both a standard IR(Infrared Command) AND an RF (Radio Frequency) signal. If you install the PowerBlaster™ kit, it will automaticallyreceive RF10’s radio signals and translate them into theinfrared commands that control your Components.NOTE:The RF10's radio signals will not control Componentsdirectly.You must have a PowerBlaster™ to receive the RF10'sradio signals. Components that came with "no pointing"radio remote controls cannot be operated by the RF10 unlessthe Component can be switched to standard IR (InfraredControl) via its internal menus. Some remote control ceilingfans are radio only and cannot be operated by the RF10.The RF10 sends radio signal to the PowerBlaster™, which is aradio receiver.The PowerBlaster™ converts radio signals to standardinfrared commands and sends them out via a built-in frontblaster to Components in the same cabinet space. Self-adhesive “flashers” (included in the PowerBlaster™kit) affix to the front panels of your Components. The flash-ers relay infrared commands to Components out-of-sight ofthe PowerBlaster’s front blaster. The flashers plug intoPowerBlaster’s rear flasher line output jacks. The LCD displayshows you which of your components it is currently set to control.When you press one of the eight COMPONENT buttons (thoselabeled AUDIO, CD, DVD, etc.), the RF10 changes the functions of allof other buttons to control that component.Why does the display flash at me sometimes?The RF10 has an extra “hidden” command (usually a power user orhobbyist feature) on some of your buttons. This command is issuedinstead of the normal command if you press the SHIFT button first.Once you have pressed the SHIFT button, the display will flash forten seconds. If you press it by accident, you can stop the SHIFTflashing by pressing the SHIFT button or the LIGHT button.Can I program the RF10 on a computer?No, the RF10 is only programmed by the methods explained in thismanual and the Quick Setup DVD Guide.What is a “macro” button?A “macro” is a button on the RF10 that you setup to make a lot ofthings happen when you press it. For example, to watch a DVD inmost home theaters requires several remote controls and many buttonpresses (power up the TV, power up the surround sound, powerup the DVD player, set the TV to the correct video input, set the surroundsound to the correct audio input and finally; press play on theDVD player remote control).Instead of pressing all of those buttons one at a time, the RF10enables you to setup one button that does all those stepsautomatically with one press. For more information on how and whyyou should setup macro buttons, watch the Quick Setup DVDProgram Guide or refer to pages 19 - 20 in this Manual.If the batteries run out, will I lose my settings?No. The RF10 stores all of your settings in non-volatile FLASH memo-ry.
