The SHIFT Button SHIFT Button/LIGHT Button GETTING STARTED 7 Pre-Programmed Code Method BASIC SETUP Once you have located the 3-digit code (or in some cases, several code numbers) for the Component that you want to operate with your RF10, write them ALL down on a piece of note paper. It’s important that you write down all the codes because only one code is going to work for you. Now, turn on the Component you want to program… let’s say your TV to start. Look up your TV’s manufacturer setup code from your reference list. The pre-programmed 3-digit codes are found in the back of this Manual on page 38. The codes are listed by Component category (i.e., TV, VCR, DVD, etc.), then by brand name. For instance, if you want to locate a code for a Sony TV, first locate the TV category, and then look for the Sony brand. IMPORTANT:You now have 30 seconds to perform the next step while you are in SETUP mode. If you don’t press a button within 30 seconds, SET will disappear from the screen, signaling that you have exited setup mode and you will need to start over. Press and hold the COMPONENT button (in this case TV) and SELECT button at the same time for approximately 3 seconds. The LCD screen will display “SET” signaling that you are now in Setup mode and ready to program your TV. STEP 3: STEP 2: STEP 1: Pre-Programmed Code Method There are three ways to program the RF10: > The Pre-Programmed Code Method > The Pre-Programmed Auto-Search Method > The Learning Method The Pre-Programmed Code Method allows you to setup all the buttons at once, so it’s the fastest and easiest of the three methods. The Auto-Search Method scans through all the codes in the RF10, one at a time. The Learning Method allows you to transfer functions from other remotes (old or new), one button at a time. Basic Setup - Overview SELECT BUTTON COMPONENT BUTTON Pre-Programmed Code Method BASIC SETUP 9 Pre-Programmed Code Method BASIC SETUP PLAY BUTTON STOP BUTTON VOLUME BUTTON ON BUTTON CODE DISPLAY Point the RF10 toward the Component you want to program, (in this example, TV), and punch in the 3-digit code that you wrote down for that specific Component. Use the Number buttons 0-9 on the remote to punch in the code. If the 3-digit code number that you just punched in is correct, the Component will turn off. If the Component does not turn off, continue entering code numbers from your list until the Component turns off. Some brands have several possible code numbers. STEP 4: YOUR OLD REMOTES AWAY. JUST A FEW MINUTES AND PUT ALL YOU CAN FINISH BASIC SETUP IN 2 THROUGH 6. IN MOST SYSTEMS, COMPONENTS BY REPEATING STEPS NOW, PROGRAM THE REST OF YOUR Once you have found the right code, save the code number by pressing the Component button you just programmed (in this case TV) one more time. The LCD screen will blink “SAVED” two times, signaling that the code number has been successfully saved, and then return to normal operating mode (in this case TV). When the Component turns off, press the ON button to turn the Component back on. Now you can test the Volume and Channel buttons (for TV), or PLAY and STOP (for VCR and DVD) to make sure they all work. If any of the buttons do not work properly, you need to find a new correct code. For example, maybe your Sony TV turned off with code number 147, but the volume controls did not work properly. If this is the case, try the next code number listed for that Component until you find a perfect match. NOTE: If the Component fails to turn off after you have entered all the code numbers listed for your brand, you can use either the Auto-Search Method on Page 11 or the Learning Method on Page 13. STEP 6: STEP 5: 10 Pre-Programmed Code Method BASIC SETUP 11 Pre-Programmed Auto-Search Method BASIC SETUP ON BUTTON UP ARROW BUTTON SELECT BUTTON TV COMPONENT IMPORTANT:You now have 30 seconds to perform the next step while you are in SETUP mode. So, continue pressing the UP ARROW button until you find a code that makes the VOLUME and PLAY buttons work properly. 12 Pre-Programmed Auto-Search Method BASIC SETUP 13 Learning Method BASIC SETUP ENTER BUTTON COMPONENT BUTTON IMPORTANT:You now have 30 seconds to perform the next step while you are in SETUP mode. If you don’t press a button within 30 seconds, SETUP will disappear from the screen, signaling that you have exited LEARN mode and you will need to start over. Press and hold both the desired Component button (in this case TV) and the ENT (Enter) button for approximately 3 seconds. The display on the LCD screen will show LEARN, signaling that you are now in LEARN mode and ready to ‘teach’ your RF10. NOTE REGARDING SHIFT FUNCTIONS: You can teach a second additional command to a button by pressing the SHIFT button, then pressing the button you want to teach. Additionally, using the SHIFT button, you may teach commands to the COMPONENT buttons themselves at the AUDIO mode. Simply select the AUDIO component in STEP 2, press SHIFT, and then the component buttons you want to teach. Press any button on the RF10 that you want to teach a command to. Once you press a button, the top of the screen display will change from “LEARN” to “READY”. Line-up the RF10 with the other remote control, head-to-head, one or two inches apart. STEP 2: STEP 3: STEP 1: The RF10 can actually ‘learn’ commands from other remote controls (old or new), one-button-at-a-time, so it will never become obsolete. RF10 is the last remote you’ll ever need! Just follow these simple steps: Learning Method If the “FAIL” label appears on top of the display, try ‘teaching’ the same button to the RF10 once again by repeating STEPS 3 and 4. Now, continue to teach the RF10 any other commands from your other remotes by repeating STEPS 3 and 4 until the RF10 has learned all the buttons you want. Press and hold the button on the other remote control that you want to ‘teach’ to the RF10 until the LCD display on the RF10 changes to either “GOOD” or “FAIL”. It will then change to “READY”. If the “GOOD” label appears on top of the display, you were successful. STEP 4: 14 Learning Method BASIC SETUP 15 Learning Method BASIC SETUP • Gradually vary the distance between the remote controls. Try 1”, 2” and so on, up to 4 feet. • • Even though the old remote seems to be working fine, put in fresh alkaline batteries. To return to an original pre-programmed function, a learned function must be erased. • Learned functions are retained even after a different Setup Code Number is programmed into the remote. • Learned functions are automatically erased when a new function is learned on the same button. • All buttons can be learned except for the PAGE, MAIN and LIGHT buttons. • Learned functions override any existing pre-programmed functions on the remote control. Some additional Information regarding the Learning Process: • Try tapping the button on your old remote instead of pressing and holding it during the learning process. • Move to another room. Plasma TVs, sunlight, halogen or quartz lighting can interfere with the learning process. NOTE: Test all your new commands. If any of them don’t work, try the Learning Method again, following these suggestions: Once you have completed teaching all the button commands to the RF10, save your work and return to normal operation by pressing both the COMPONENT button you pressed in STEP 2 and the ENT (Enter) button at the same time. The remote will respond by flashing SAVED on the display twice, then return to normal operating mode. STEP 5: To Return to Normal Operation: Press the +10 and ENT (Enter) buttons simultaneously again for 3 seconds. The LCD will display the last use mode. To Activate: Press the +10 and ENT (Enter) buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. The LCD will blink “LOCK” three times and then display “LOCK”. This ‘child-lock’ feature prevents the unauthorized use of the remote control by children. It blocks all operations of the remote control. CHILD LOCK FEATURE When a command is being transmitted, an icon will appear in the far right side of the LCD screen. This indicates that a signal is being sent. This is particularly useful when setting up Macros, since it flashes with every step of a sequence of commands. Transmitting (Busy Signal) Icon 16 Transmitting (Busy Signal) Icon BASIC SETUP 17 Customizing Y our RF10 with Special Advanced Features ADVANCED SETUP The current COMPONENT name will then appear on the screen, with the first space/character blinking on and off. Change the character by using any of the NUMBER buttons. Each press of the same NUMBER button selects the next character of that number’s group, as shown in the diagram below: Press and hold both the COMPONENT button you want to rename and the MENU button at the same time for approximately 3 seconds, until the word “EDIT” is displayed on the LCD screen. This signals that you are now in EDIT mode. IMPORTANT:You now have 30 seconds to perform the next step while you are in EDIT mode. If you don’t press a button within 30 seconds, EDIT will disappear from the screen, signaling that you have exited EDIT mode and you will need to start over. STEP 2: STEP 1: You can easily edit or change the name of any of the eight COMPONENT buttons on the LCD screen. For example, you can rename AUX to “LIGHTS” or SAT to “DISH”, etc. Here’s how: Customizing Component Names on the LCD Screen After you’ve finished all your basic setup, you can choose to make operation easier by customizing the RF10 just the way you want, using the Special Advanced Setup Features described in this section. Customizing Your RF10 with Special Advanced Features STEP 4: When you are finished editing the COMPONENT name, press the COMPONENT button you pressed in STEP 1 to save the changes. The RF10 will respond by flashing “SAVED” twice, then automatically return to normal operating mode. STEP 3: Once the character you want appears, move to the next space by pressing the Right ( ) cursor button. Use the Left ( ) cursor button to move the blinking character to the left. Use the Down ( ) cursor button to delete the currently blinking character. 18 Customizing Your RF10 with Special Advanced Features ADVANCED SETUP 19 MacroPowerTM Setup ADVANCED SETUP You can also program delays in between commands by pressing the (II) PAUSE button. Each press adds half a second to the delay. NOTE: Don’t worry about the number of steps. Each macro button can store up to 50 steps, so you are not likely to run out of steps! (NOTE: Whenever a button is pressed, another Macro step is counted and displayed on the screen.) Press the first COMPONENT button you want to turn on (in this example, TV) and then confirm the command by pressing the ON button. Repeat this step for all the other components in the order you want them to turn on (in this example, VCR followed by CABLE). The LCD screen changes to the MACRO step display for each command. Press and hold both the ON button and the MUTE buttons at the same time for approximately 3 seconds, until the word “MACRO” is displayed on the LCD screen. This signals that you are now in MACRO Setup mode. IMPORTANT:You now have 30 seconds to perform the next step while you are in MACRO mode. If you don’t press a button within 30 seconds, MACRO will disappear from the screen, signaling that you have exited MACRO Setup mode and you will need to start over. STEP 2: STEP 1: To setup a Power ON macro button that will turn ON several components at the same time (for example, TV, VCR and CABLE), follow these easy steps: MacroPower™ is a unique feature that enables you to turn all of your Components ON or OFF, at the same time, simply with the press of one button. We call that a “Macro”. What would normally take multiple remotes and button pushes, the RF10 can accomplish with the press of one button. In addition to the Power ON or OFF buttons, any of the Component buttons can be set to be Macro buttons as well. Feel the power! MacroPower™ Setup SETTING UP A POWER OFF OR A COMPONENT BUTTON AS MACRO: If you want to program macro commands for the OFF or one of the 8 component buttons, in STEP 1, simply press the button you want to be a macro instead of the ON button. For example, you can setup an AUDIO button to be a macro by pressing AUD (Audio) and MUTE for 3 seconds. Once the screen displays “MACRO”, press the button with the command you want. Then complete and save the Macro by following STEP 3 as outlined above. Once you have entered all the desired Power On commands, press the CHANNEL ( ) UP button to save your MacroPower commands. The RF10 will respond by flashing “SAVED” twice, then automatically return to normal operating mode. STEP 3: PROGRAMMING A “PRESS & HOLD” MACRO: Another option for macro buttons is to only send the macro commands if the button is pressed and held. This is setup by entering a delay as the first step of the macro. The amount of delay determines how long the user must press the button before the macro is sent. The advantage of this option is that a normal press of the COMPONENT button will simply switch Components without sending the macro command. 20 MacroPowerTM Setup ADVANCED SETUP 21 SimpleSoundTM Setup & Other ‘Punch Throughs’ ADVANCED SETUP IMPORTANT: You now have 30 seconds to perform the next step while you are in Setup mode. If you don’t press a button within 30 seconds, “SET” will disappear from the screen, signaling that you have exited Setup mode and you will need to start over. Press and hold both the COMPONENT button you want to add volume control to, such as DVD or VCR, and the SEL (Select) button for approximately 3 seconds, until the word “SET” is displayed on the LCD screen. This signals that you are now in SimpleSound Setup mode. STEP 2: In a basic home entertainment system, the sound may come from your TV. In a more advanced system, the sound may come from your audio Component such as a Surround Sound Receiver or Home Theatre system. So, first, you need to identify which Component you want to use in your system for sound. STEP 1: Press the VOL+ button. The screen will alternately blink PUNCH and FROM in the display. STEP 3: Now, let’s setup SimpleSoundTM. Here’s how: SimpleSoundTM is a dynamic feature that gives you total volume control over all the Components in your system, even those without their own built-in volume control, such as TiVo, DVD and VCR... saving you the hassle and inconvenience of constantly needing to switch between Component modes on the remote. With SimpleSoundTM, you can set the RF10’s volume control buttons to always control the sound in your system, even when you’re in VCR or DVD mode, without switching back to AUDIO or TV. Even more exciting, SimpleSound¢‚ is what is called a ‘Punch Through’ feature and is not limited strictly to volume control. Click and enjoy! SimpleSoundTM Setup & Other ‘Punch Throughs’ Repeat STEPS 2-4 until all your other components (VCR, CABLE, CD, etc.) operate the volume perfectly. STEP 5: Now, press the COMPONENT button for the component that has the Volume control you want (i.e., TV for systems using the TV speakers, AUDIO for systems using Surround Sound receivers). The screen display will flash “SAVED” twice to confirm the command is saved, and the RF10 will automatically return to normal operating mode. This sets up a group of three buttons (Volume Up, Volume Down, and MUTE) in one action! STEP 4: Simply perform the steps above and for step 3, press the first button listed in the group and all buttons will be programmed. • VOL - Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute • CH - Channel Up, Channel Down, Previous Ch and Channel (0-9) buttons. • PLAY - Play, Stop, Pause, Rewind and Fast Forward • VOD - Menu, Guide, Info, Exit, Up, Down,Left, Right, Select NOTE: The Punch Through feature is not limited to volume and can also be applied to other groups of buttons and functions. If you find yourself switching to a particular component frequently to use a group of controls, consider using Punch Through for another group, as listed here: 22 SimpleSoundTM Setup & Other ‘Punch Throughs’ ADVANCED SETUP IMPORTANT: You now have 30 seconds to perform the next step while you are in Setup mode. If you don’t press a button within 30 seconds, ”SET” will disappear from the screen, signaling that you have exited Setup mode and you will need to start over. Press and hold both the AUX and SEL (Select) buttons at the same time for approximately 3 seconds, until the word “SET” displays on the LCD screen. AUX BUTTON NUMBER BUTTONS When the Component turns off, press the ON button to turn the Component back on. Now you can test the Volume and STEP 5: Point the RF10 toward the Component you want to program, (in this example, TV), and punch in the 3-digit code that you wrote down for that specific Component. Use the Number buttons 0-9 on the remote to punch in the code. If the 3-digit code number that you just punched in is correct, the Component will turn off. If the Component does not turn off, continue entering code numbers from your list until the Component turns off. Some brands have several possible code numbers. STEP 4: Press the component button you want to setup (in this case TV). Turn on the component you wish to setup (a second TV for example). STEP 2: STEP 3: STEP 1: After you’ve finished customizing the RF10’s programming for seven primary components, and you did not use AUX, you can take advantage of the AUX function to program an 8th component, such as a second TV, VCR, or any other audio/video component that you may have in your system. AUX Function: Programming an 8th Component NOTE: Any component button can be setup to operate any type of component by following these same steps. Simply substitute the desired component button in place of AUX in STEP 2. Once you have found the right code, save the code number by pressing the Component button you pressed in STEP 2 (in this case AUX) one more time. The LCD screen will blink "SAVED" two times, signaling that the code number has been successfully saved, and then return to normal operating mode. STEP 6: Channel buttons (for TV), or PLAY and STOP (for VCR and DVD) to make sure they all work. If any of the buttons do not work properly, you need to find a new correct code. Re-setting RF10 to Original Factory Default Settings 34 ERASING COMMANDS 35 The Optional PowerBlasterTM POWERBLASTERTM The RF10 sends radio signal to the PowerBlaster™, which is a radio receiver. NOTE:The RF10's radio signals will not control Components directly. You must have a PowerBlaster™ to receive the RF10's radio signals. Components that came with "no pointing" radio remote controls cannot be operated by the RF10 unless the Component can be switched to standard IR (Infrared Control) via its internal menus. Some remote control ceiling fans are radio only and cannot be operated by the RF10. One of the best things about this is — nothing has to be done to the RF10 for this feature to work. Every time you press a button on the RF10, it sends both a standard IR (Infrared Command) AND an RF (Radio Frequency) signal. If you install the PowerBlaster™ kit, it will automatically receive RF10’s radio signals and translate them into the infrared commands that control your Components. This changes everything! It enables you to control Components that are completely out-of-sight, up to 100’ away. The PowerBlaster™ picks up RF10’s radio frequency signals from any direction, regardless of distance, so RF10 doesn’t need to be pointed directly at any Component. Just imagine – no more pointing! Now you can close your entertainment center doors, hide your Components, and still control them with ease. Control outdoor speakers on your patio. Control your Components anywhere! Of all the fabulous RF10 features, this is probably the most exciting. When used in combination with the optional PowerBlaster™, the RF10 becomes an amazing remote control powerhouse that sends multi-directional RF (Radio Frequency) signals that pass through walls, doors and floors – both indoors and outdoors. (for ‘barrier-free’ RF control) [Sold separately] The Optional PowerBlaster™ Self-adhesive “flashers” (included in the PowerBlaster™ kit) affix to the front panels of your Components. The flashers relay infrared commands to Components out-of-sight of the PowerBlaster’s front blaster. The flashers plug into PowerBlaster’s rear flasher line output jacks. Each flasher has a 10’ cable to easily reach Components on nearby shelves. The PowerBlaster™ converts radio signals to standard infrared commands and sends them out via a built-in front blaster to Components in the same cabinet space. 36 The Optional PowerBlasterTM POWERBLASTERTM 37 Pre-Programmed Code Notes PRE-PROGRAMMED CODE NOTES X-BOX IPOD XM RADIO LDP DVR VCR2 TV2 PHONO TAPE LIGHT AUX CABLE VCR TV SAT CD DVD AUDIO Record the three digit codes for your system here: Pre-Programmed Code Notes Tape Decks, Lighting Controls, Multimedia PCs, Xbox, iPod and Custom Installation Products AUX NOTE: Following the Code Tables are Command Locators. Who can I call for more answers? Batteries: Four AAA Alkaline batteries included No. The RF10 stores all of your settings in non-volatile FLASH memory. You could remove the batteries for months, replace them at your convenience, and the RF10 would still remember your settings. Size: 8.5” x 2.5” x 1” Weight: 7.1 oz. (with batteries) RF Frequency: 418MHz RF Range (radio frequency): 50 to 100 feet, depending upon the environment IR Range (Line of Sight via Infrared): 30-50 feet, depending on the environment Macro Capability - 10 Macros of up to 50 steps each Learning Capability - 704 IR commands at standard frequencies (15kHz to 100kHz) Specifications If the batteries run out, will I lose my settings? Instead of pressing all of those buttons one at a time, the RF10 enables you to setup one button that does all those steps automatically with one press. For more information on how and why you should setup macro buttons, watch the Quick Setup DVD Program Guide or refer to pages 19 - 20 in this Manual. A “macro” is a button on the RF10 that you setup to make a lot of things happen when you press it. For example, to watch a DVD in most home theaters requires several remote controls and many button presses (power up the TV, power up the surround sound, power up the DVD player, set the TV to the correct video input, set the surround sound to the correct audio input and finally; press play on the DVD player remote control). What is a “macro” button? No, the RF10 is only programmed by the methods explained in this manual and the Quick Setup DVD Guide. Can I program the RF10 on a computer? The RF10 has an extra “hidden” command (usually a power user or hobbyist feature) on some of your buttons. This command is issued instead of the normal command if you press the SHIFT button first. Once you have pressed the SHIFT button, the display will flash for ten seconds. If you press it by accident, you can stop the SHIFT flashing by pressing the SHIFT button or the LIGHT button. Why does the display flash at me sometimes? - Damage from misuse, neglect, or acts of nature - Products that have been modified or incorporated into other products - Products purchased more than 12 months ago - Units purchased from unauthorized dealers or companies Universal Remote Control’s MastercontrolTM RF10 is covered against any manufacturers defects or workmanship for a period of one year from the date of purchase if purchased from an authorized Universal Remote Control dealer. Units purchased from online auction sites or other unauthorized resellers have no warranty. This warranty does not cover the following items: Why does the display change whenever you press the buttons at the top of the remote? The RF10 is actually eight remote controls in one. The LCD display shows you which of your components it is currently set to control. When you press one of the eight COMPONENT buttons (those labeled AUDIO, CD, DVD, etc.), the RF10 changes the functions of all of other buttons to control that component.
