Replacing the BatteriesIf the battery level indicator displays as empty (" ") afterusing the phone for a short time, even when thebatteries have been fully charged, the batteries shouldbe replaced. Before replacing the batteries, make sure the lowbattery warning is displayed, then turn off the power toprevent memory loss. In this case, use the handset asnormal with the new batteries installed. To install thebatteries, see "Battery Installation (Page 46)".When the low battery warning is displayed, charge thebatteries for about 7 hours. The battery strength iconwill then display the correct reading.•Please use AAA Ni-MH 1.2 V, 700 mAh batteriesonly. (For details, consult your dealer.)•There is a danger of explosion if the batteries areincorrectly replaced.Nickel metal hydride batteries thatare recyclable power the productyou have purchased. Please call 1-800-8-BATTERY forinformation on how to recyclethese batteries.Important Notice Concerning theCorrect Use and Charging of Ni-MHBatteriesBatteries, due to their construction, undergo some wearand tear. The lifetime of batteries also depends oncorrect maintenance. Charging and discharging are themost important factors. You should take notice of thefollowing to maintain the life of the batteries as long aspossible.Ni-MH batteries have a kind of memory, the "memoryeffect". If fully charged batteries are used several timesonly for 15 minutes in the handset and then recharged, the capacity of the batteries will be reduced to 15minutes due to the memory effect. Therefore you shoulddischarge the batteries completely, i.e. use them in thehandset until the battery level indicator displays asempty (" "). Then recharge them as described in themanual. After the memory effect has occurred, it ispossible to achieve almost complete capacity of theNi-MH batteries by charging and discharging severaltimes one after another.Ni-MH batteries can also self-discharge. Thisself-discharge depends on the ambient temperature. Attemperatures under 0 °C (32 °F), the self-discharge willbe the lowest. High humidity and high temperaturessupport the self-discharge. Also long-term storage willlead to self-discharge.CAUTIONRISK OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERIES AREREPLACED BY AN INCORRECT TYPE.
