The CF-18’s outstanding engineering has been tested us-ing the strict MIL-STD- 810F (for vibration and shock) and IP(for dust and water) based procedures.As with any portable computer device precautions should be takento avoid any damage. The following usage and handling proce-dures are recommended.Before putting the computer away, be sure to wipe off any moisture.Precautions ( Battery Pack )Care should be exercised with regard to the following in or-der to avoid the possibility of overheating, fire or damage.Avoid HeatDo not throw the battery pack into a fire orexpose it to excessive heat.Do Not DisassembleDo not insert sharp objects into the battery pack,expose it to bumps or shocks, deform, disas-semble, or modify it.Do Not ShortDo not short the positive (+) and negative (-)contacts.Do Not Put into a MicrowaveDo not put the battery pack into a microwaveoven or a pressurized chamber.Avoid Extreme Heat, Cold and Direct Sun-lightDo not charge, use or leave the battery pack forextended periods where it will be exposed to di-rect sunlight, in a hot place (in an automobile ona sunny day, for example), or in a cold place.Keep Articles AwayDo not place the battery pack together with ar-ticles such as necklaces or hairpins when carry-ing or storing.Stop UsingShould the battery emit an abnormal odor, be-come hot to the touch, become discolored,change shape, or become in any way differentfrom normal, remove it from the computer orcharger and stop using it.Do Not Use With Any Other ComputerThe battery pack is rechargeable and was in-tended for the specified computer or charger. Donot use it with a computer other than the one forwhich it was designed.Do not use this computer with a battery packother than the one specified (the one includedwith the computer or the specified batterypack sold separately)Do not touch the terminals on the battery pack. The bat-tery pack may no longer function properly if the contactsare dirty or damaged.Do not expose the battery pack to water, or allow it to be-come wet.
8Getting StartedNOTEThe battery pack may become warm during recharging ornormal use. This is completely normal.Recharging will not commence if internal temperature ofthe battery pack is outside of the allowable temperaturerange (0 °C to 50 °C {32°F to 122 °F}) “Bat-tery Power”. Once the allowable range requirement issatisfied, charging begins automatically. Note that the re-charging time varies based on the usage conditions. (Re-charging takes longer than usual when the temperature is10 °C {50 °F} or less.)If the temperature is low, the operating time is shortened. Onlyuse the computer within the allowable temperature range.This computer has a high temperature mode function thatprevents the degradation of the battery in high tempera-ture environments. ( “Battery Power”) A levelcorresponding to a 100% charge for high temperature isapproximately equivalent to an 80% charge level for nor-mal temperature mode.The battery pack is a consumable item. If the amount oftime the computer can be run by using a particular batterypack becomes dramatically shorter and repeatedrechargings do not restore its performance, the battery packshould be replaced with a new one.When transporting a spare battery inside a package,briefcase, etc., it is recommended that it be placed in aplastic bag so that its contacts are protected.Always power off the computer when it is not in use.Leaving the computer on when the AC adaptor is notconnected will exhaust the remaining battery capacity.If the battery pack will not be used for a long period of time(a month or more), charge or discharge (use) the battery packuntil the remaining battery level becomes 30% to 40% andstore it in a cool, dry place.This computer prevents overcharging of the battery by re-charging only when the remaining power is less than approx.95% of capacity.The battery pack is not charged when the computer is firstpurchased. 19OperationThe power saving function is factory set, so if there is no input from a key, the touchpad, the tablet button, the digitizer or an external mouse (when one is connected) fora certain interval of time, the power to the LCD and hard disk may be turned off. TheLCD will resume operation when the touch pad, the digitizer or an external mouse(when one is connected) is used or a key or the tablet button is pressed.The power to the LCD may be turned off even when an application software is beinginstalled. In this case, because it is conceivable that a selection dialog box will beshown, do not press Space or Enter to attempt to resume from this conditionas doing so may trigger a selection, but instead, press a key unrelated to the directtriggering of a selection, like Ctrl .In addition, when the computer is left alone, it automatically enters the standby orhibernation mode. The computer will resume by sliding the power switch. 42AppendixHard Disk Backup FunctionThe hard disk backup function creates a backup area (storage area) on the hard disk. This area is to back up (store) hard disk contentsor restore backed up contents to their original locations.By backing up the data on your hard disk to a backup area, you can protect your data from loss or damage resulting from operationalerrors or other factors. Also, you can back up or restore hard disk contents using this computer alone, without having to use othermedia or peripheral devices.At the time of purchase, the hard disk backup function is disabled. If you follow the procedure below to create a backup area, thehard disk backup function will be enabled, and you will be able to back up your data. Note, that once the backup function has beenenabled, you will have to perform the reinstallation procedure to disable it again ( page 38).Disconnect or remove all peripheral devices (except for the CD/DVD drive), as the backup areamay not be created properly while these devices are connected.Be sure the AC adaptor is connected to the computer.A backup area cannot be created if the hard disk is already divided into several partitions.
