The CF-29’s outstanding engineering has beentested using the stiff MIL-STD- 810F (for vibration and shock)and IP (for dust and water) based procedures.As with any portable computer device precautions should betaken to avoid any damage. The following usage and handlingprocedures are recommended.Avoiding low-temperature burnsAvoid more than casual contact with any heat pro-ducing area of the notebook computer, AC adap-tor, and any option or accessory you use with it.Even low heat, if warmer than body temperature,can cause a burn, if the skin is exposed to the heatsource for a long enough period of time.Avoid Magnetic FieldsKeep the computer away from magnets.Data stored on the hard disk may be lost.Keep Small Objects AwayDo not insert paper clips or other small objectsinto the computer.Do Not Disassemble the ComputerDo not attempt to disassemble your computer.Avoid Excessive Force on the DisplayDo not apply excessive downward force on thedisplay when it is completely opened, especiallywhen plugs and/or cables are connected to the rearof the computer.Before putting the computer away, be sure to wipe off any mois-ture.Precautions (Battery Pack)
7Getting StartedNOTEThe battery pack may become warm during rechargingor normal use. This is completely normal.Recharging will not commence outside of the allowabletemperature range (0 °C to 50 °C {32°F to 122 °F}) “Battery Power”. Once the allowable rangerequirement is satisfied, charging begins automatically.Note that the recharging time varies based on the usageconditions. (Recharging takes longer than usual when thetemperature is 10 °C {50 °F} or below.)If the temperature is low, the operating time is shortened.Only use the computer within the allowable temperaturerange.This computer has a high temperature mode function thatprevents the degradation of the battery in high tempera-ture environments. ( “Battery Power”) If thehigh temperature mode is enabled in the Setup Utility( “Setup Utility”), a level of 100% in the[High Temperature] mode is about a level of 80% in the[Normal Temperature] mode.The battery pack is a consumable item. If the amount oftime the computer can be run off a particular battery packbecomes dramatically shorter and repeated recharging donot restore its performance, the battery pack should bereplaced with a new one.When transporting a spare battery inside a package, brief-case, etc., it is recommended that it be placed in a plasticbag so that its contacts are protected.Always power off the computer when it is not in use.Leaving the computer on when the AC adaptor is notconnected will exhaust the remaining battery capacity.If the battery pack will not be used for a long period of time(a month or more), charge or discharge (use) the battery packuntil the remaining battery level becomes 30% to 40% andstore it in a cool, dry place.This computer prevents overcharging of the battery by re-charging only when the remaining power is less than approx.95% of capacity.The battery pack is not charged when the computer is firstpurchased. Be sure to charge it before using it for the firsttime. When the AC adaptor is connected to the computer,charging begins automatically.Should the battery leak and the fluid get into your eyes, do notrub your eyes. Immediately flush your eyes with clear waterand see a doctor for medical treatment as soon as possible.Precautions (Battery Pack)

16OperationStarting Up/Shutting DownThe power saving function is factory set, so if there is no input from a key, the touchpad, the touchscreen (only for models with touchscreen) or an external mouse (whenone is connected) for a certain interval of time, the power to the LCD and hard disk maybe turned off. The LCD will resume operation when the touch pad, the touchscreen(only for models with touchscreen) or an external mouse (when one is connected) isused or a key is pressed.The power to the LCD may be turned off even when an application software is beinginstalled. In this case, because it is conceivable that a selection dialog box will beshown, do not press Space or Enter to attempt to resume from this conditionas doing so may trigger a selection, but instead, press a key unrelated to the directtriggering of a selection, like Ctrl .In addition, when the computer is left alone, it automatically enters the standby or hiber-nation mode ( “Standby/Hibernation Functions”). The computer will re-sume by sliding the power switch.Windows XPWhen switching to a different user with the Fast User Switching function, it may not bepossible to set the settings of the display. In this case, log off all users, and try theoperation once more. 34AppendixHard Disk Backup FunctionThe hard disk backup function creates a backup area (storage area) on the hard disk. This area is to back up (store) hard diskcontents or restore backed up contents to their original locations.By backing up the data on your hard disk to a backup area, you can protect your data from loss or damage resulting from opera-tional errors or other factors. Also, you can back up or restore hard disk contents using this computer alone, without having to useother media or peripheral devices.At the time of purchase, the hard disk backup function is disabled. If you follow the procedure below to create a backup area, thehard disk backup function will be enabled, and you will be able to back up your data. Note, that once the backup function has beenenabled, you will have to perform the reinstallation procedure to disable it again ( page 30).Disconnect or remove all peripheral devices (except for the CD drive), as the backup area maynot be created properly while these devices are connected.Be sure the AC adaptor is connected to the computer.A backup area cannot be created if the hard disk is already divided into several partitions.
