Protection all the way
We believe that health and safety are the priorities in any working
environment, and that greater comfort and modern styles improve
worker compliance with regulatory requirements for protective eyewear.
Therefore, we take care in adding comfort features where they are
needed most, such as heavy contact areas like nose bridges and temple
tips. The materials we choose to provide better comfort are designed to
be durable to last and soft to the touch. We are also continually working
on new coatings, new materials and new designs to bring the latest
technology, innovation and fashion into our protective eyewear line.
What contributes to eye injuries at work?
• Not wearing eye protection. According to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, nearly three out of every ve workers injured are not
wearing eye protection at the time of the accident.
• Wearing the wrong kind of eye protection for the job. The
Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported that about 40% of the
injured workers were wearing some form of eye protection when the
accident occurred. However, these workers were most likely to be
wearing protective eyeglasses with no side shields.
What causes eye injuries?
• Flying particles. Per the Department of Labor Statistics, almost
70% of accidents resulted from ying or falling objects or sparks
striking the eye. Injured workers estimated that nearly three-
fths of the objects were smaller than a pinhead. Contact with
chemicals caused one-fth of the injuries.
Where do accidents occur most often?
• Craftwork. Potential eye hazards can be found in nearly
every industry, but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
more than 40% of injuries occurred among craft workers, like
mechanics, repairers, carpenters and plumbers.
• Industrial equipment operation. The Bureau reported that over
a third of the injured workers were operators, such as assemblers,
sanders, and grinding machine operators. Almost half of these
injured workers were employed in manufacturing.
How can eye injuries be prevented?
• Always wear effective eye protection. OSHA standards require
that employers provide workers with suitable eye protection. To
be effective, the eyewear must be of the appropriate type for the
hazard encountered and properly tted.
• Better training and education. According to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, most workers were hurt while doing their regular jobs.
Workers injured while not wearing protective eyewear most often said
they believed it was not required by the situation. Even though the vast
majority of employers furnished eye protection at no cost to employees,
about 40% of the workers received no information on where and what
kind of eyewear should be used.
• Maintenance. Eye protection devices must be properly
maintained. Scratched and dirty devices reduce vision, cause
glare and may contribute to accidents. Scratched or damaged
eyewear should be replaced immediately.

Protection

Requirements of ANSI Z87.1-2003 and provide reliable UV
protection—polycarbonate lenses absorb 99.9% UV. Additionally,
3M offers a variety of task-specic lens tints to help reduce glare,
eye stress and fatigue, as well as a range of lens coatings: hard coat,
anti-fog and our DX™ Coating, which is a combination anti-fog hard
coat that provides abrasion resistance and helps to prevent fogging.
DX provides fog resistance for up to four times longer than other
popular combination anti-fog/anti-scratch coatings while maintaining
a comparable abrasion resistance.*
Style
Style is a critical factor when it comes to raising the acceptance of the
user to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
3M´s range of eyewear
offers a variety of modern and stylish products from which to choose.
Compatibility
Eye protection must not restrict vision or movement or interfere
with the function of other personal protective equipment. Protective
eyewear should t as closely to the face as possible. When it is
necessary to wear a safety spectacle with other protective equipment,
choose a frame with t adjustment features, such as an adjustable
nose bridge or temples that can be adjusted by changing the tilt or
length to maintain the proper position close to the face. When wearing
earmuffs, select protective eyewear with thin temples or straps that
t closely to the side of the head in order to reduce their effect on the
ability of cushions to seal around the ear.
Comfort
Many 3M products come with adjustable features and soft materials in
points of contact, which help improve t and comfort for different face
sizes and shapes.

This Polycarbonate Lens Selection Guide will help you understand the need for different color lenses and lens types for industrial applications. It
will also help you determine what type of lens is best for your application and environment. There are many lens options other than clear, gray and
mirror. When choosing a lens, the basic “rule of thumb” is to consider color opposites. Examples of these opposites are shown in the chart below in
columns one and two.

The Human Eye
· The Cornea, in direct contact with external environment,
plays an essential part on the transmission of light rays. It is
the structure of the human body which has the highest
tactile sensibility.
· The Pupil (light controller), situated in the middle of the iris,
works like the diaphragm of a camera. Its diameter changes
in accordance with the luminosity.
· The Lens allows focusing (near vision, far vision) thanks to a
control muscle. With age this muscle loses power and impacts
near vision (presbyopia). The lens can lose its transparency due to
exposure to IR (infrared light) and UV (ultraviolet light), resulting in
loss of vision (cataract).
· The Retina, where all light beams converge, transmits all
information through the optic nerve to the brain in order to
create your vision. Burned retina cells are lost forever which
causes irreversible loss of vision.
Industrial hazards for the eyes:
· Mechanical hazards: dust, shock,
solid particles.
· Thermal hazards: hot liquid, molten
splash, flames.
· Chemical hazards: splashes of
acids, solvents.
· Radiation hazards: ultraviolet,
infrared, visible, light, laser.
· Electrical hazards: direct contact,
short-circuit electric arc.
