Applicability This technical note applies to auxiliary housing fitted to the Tait
Orca Accessories TOPA-AA-001 through to TOPA-AA-005.
Date of
Production Production of the accessories TOPA-AA-001 to TOPA-AA-005
with the new auxiliary housing started from the 3/11/99
Description of the Changes
We have added small clips on the 4mm diameter legs that locate the housing. This
change in design means that the Connector now has to be fitted at an angle to the radio
so that the clips engage ie. the steps are:
The top of the connector leans away from the radio as the legs are engaged
(approx. 15 degrees)
The connector is rotated flat to its normal position
The quarter turn lock is locked (as before)
Removal is accomplished by reversal of theses steps.
With this change our preliminary results were that we could not reach an unclipping
force. Advantages from the change:
Much higher force to disconnect; 20kgf versus @4kgf for the previous model.
No change to the Radio. New Connectors are backward compatible with older
Radios, including pre dovetail models.
No effect on the Car Kit.
Disadvantages from the change are:
If the New Connectors are badly fitted, ie. they are pushed straight on and locked,
there are two problems:

Tait Orca Accessory TOPA-AA-001 to
TOPA-AA-005
25 January 2000
1. The first is that the connector will sit up from the Rear Panel and in this state it is
worse than the previous version.
2. If from there the connector is pressed from the back to make the clips go fully
home (you will hear them click) then this rounds over the edge of the Rear Panel
hole and the pull force to unclip is reduced.
NB: The radio is still functional in this second condition and is still better than the
previous version but you may get some customers needing replaced Rear Panels to
restore full performance.
Costs of the change; Stock obsolescence, Capex costs, Higher part costs,
Engineering costs.
The Connectors are not quite as easy to fit as the previous version
Note to CSOs Please pass this information to all internal sales and technical
staff, and to all dealers.
