Instructions:
• In order to maintain the same testing environment as the online students, I cannot answer
questions about the exam or clarify questions. Please just choose the best answer for each
question.
• Carefully remove this sheet from the front of this exam and write all your answers on the answer
sheet on the back.
• Write your name in the box above and at the top of the first page of questions.
• In the Key box above, write a short secret word or number that only you will know (6 characters
or less). I will publicly post grades later indexed by this key. If someone else knows your key,
they will be able to determine your grade on the midterm exam.
• You may mark up the exam itself, but all answers to the multiple choice questions must
be written on the answer sheet to get credit. I will not be looking at what your write in
the exam for the multiple choice questions.
• There are 25 multiple choice questions. You will receive 4 points for each correct answer, 0
points for each answer left blank, and −1 13 points for each incorrect answer.
• Because of the penalty for wrong answers, random guessing has an expected value of 0 points.
However, if you can eliminate one or more choices, then the odds are in your favor for guessing.
(On average you would do better by guesing from the remaining choices than by leaving the
question blank.) Of course, it is still possible to do worse than if you had left the problem blank.
• Answers are randomly ordered even when two questions have the same set of possible choices.
Do not assume that the choices are given in the same order for two related questions.
• When you are finished, turn in your exam, your answer sheet, and your sheet of notes.
