TiVo acts as the brain, always working to find and record your favorite programs. Once you experience TiVo and DVD recording, there’s just no going back. And here’s the best part: the TiVo Basic™ service is included with the purchase of the Pioneer DVR-810H-S! You don’t have to do anything else and there’s no fee. So get ready —with the DVR-810H-S and TiVo, you can Find, Store, and Burn what you want, when you want. Find It The TiVo service automatically finds the programs you want to watch, and then records them on the built-in Hard Disc Drive for viewing. Now, YOU decide when it's prime time. Smart, Customized Viewing The TiVo service*1 searches through all the channels that are available to your home and assembles three days worth of programming information into an easy-access guide. Bottom line: you see the entertainment you like and avoid everything else. THE NEXT T E C H N O L O G Y Showcases Love HBO movies? Want to know what's on NBC tomorrow night? The Showcases menus put it all into one handy grid. It's also a great place to get new ideas about upcoming events you won't want to miss. Easy Setup TiVo service is simple to set up and use, with a friendly on-screen navigator that steps you through the process. You can be up and watching in less than an hour! Whether you get your TV signal via cable, digital cable, satellite, antenna, or a combination thereof, TiVo has you covered. It holds a database of over 13,000 channels covering the United States. (To use both satellite and cable at the same time, an upgrade to TiVo Plus™ service is required). Season Pass™ automatically records every episode of your favorite series every time it's on, even skipping the repeats. You can use WishList™ to search for programs that match your unique interests: tech gadgets, history, you name it. With Online Scheduling, you can schedule recordings from anywhere, via the GENERATION OF Web. And, TiVo Plus™ Service offers a 14-day Program Guide, vs. 3 days with TiVo Basic™ service, so finding future shows and selecting them for recording is even easier. With the TiVo Plus™ upgrade, you can also take advantage of a home computer network to enable TiVo’s exciting Home Media Features*3. Enjoy digital music and digital photos right in your living room. Or, with a TiVo Series2 DVR you can even experience multi-room viewing. For more information, visit www.tivo.com/media. Store It SO, just where is all this great content being stored? Glad you asked. The DVR-810H-S includes a big 80GB Hard Disc Drive that holds up to 80 hours of your favorite shows. Now when you turn on your TV, you’re greeted with a menu of your own personalized entertainment, instead of endless channelsurfing. Watch This How easy is it to watch a program that TiVo has found and stored for you? Just select the program from the “Now Playing” menu and enjoy. DVD If you think you have seen and heard all DVD has to offer, think again. This year Pioneer unleashes technology that will integrate and exhilarate your digital world. It starts with the world's first DVD recorder with built-in TiVo®— combining four components into one and allowing you to easily find, store, burn, and play your personal digital content. And it includes a full line of DVD players featuring progressive scan and playback of high-resolution DVD-Audio and SACD discs. DVD movies were just the beginning; welcome to the next generation. Control Live TV Here’s the amazing thing: because now you’re watching video off the Hard Disc Drive, you can pause, rewind, or slow things down so you never miss a moment. Hit the fast-forward button during recorded programs to skip the parts you don't want to see. Chase Play Picture this: you come home late, missing the first ten minutes of a show you were looking forward to. With Chase Play, you can back up and catch the beginning, while the DVR-810H-S finishes recording to the end. You’ll never miss your favorite shows again. Burn It Once you’ve stored TV shows and movies on your Hard Disc Drive, you have lots of options. You can keep them on the Hard Disc Drive for repeat viewing, or just watch them once and delete them to free up space. Or, you can burn them onto a DVD — either a DVD-R or DVD-RW — that you can play on most players almost anywhere, even in your car or on your laptop. DVD-R or DVD-RW? Favorite shows and one-of-a-kind home movies are good examples of content you’d want to permanently archive onto a DVD-R, so they can’t accidentally be erased. Or, use a DVD-RW (content can be erased and re-written) to share with friends and for temporary storage. 80 Hours of Programming How much material will fit on an 80GB Hard Disc Drive or a DVD? It depends upon the recording quality you select and the type of programming. Here are the recording capacities for each, by quality level: Quality Level Extreme (Fine) High (SP) Medium (LP) Basic (EP) Recorder 14 Hours 27 Hours 54 Hours 80 Hours DVD 1 Hour 2 Hours 4 Hours 6 Hours One Fast, Easy Drive It’s easy to record material from the Hard Disc Drive onto DVD. The DVR-810H-S features up to 15x recording speed, so you can dub a 2-hour program to DVD in Basic EP Quality mode in less than 10 minutes. After using a S-L-O-W VCR for so long, you’re going to love DVD recording. You can even record content to the Hard Disc Drive while dubbing different content from the Hard Disc Drive to a DVD! Plus, DVD recordings are made in Video Mode, so your newly recorded discs will play in most DVD players. Extreme Levels of Quality Relax: once captured to the Hard Disc Drive, your programs stay digital, with vastly superior detail, color accuracy, and audio quality compared to videotape. To take it a step farther, the DVR-810H-S provides an additional level of recording quality, called "Extreme" (Fine), that is not offered by even the best stand-alone DVR set-top boxes. DCDI by Faroudja When material originally shot on video (as opposed to film) is up-converted from standard definition (480i) to enhanced definition quality (480p), the process calls for some new video information to be created. Overall, this “interpolation” greatly improves picture quality, but during fast-paced programs such as pro football and hockey it often causes unwanted jagged edges (jaggies) along diagonal lines. The DVR-810H-S utilizes a technique called “Directional Correlation De-Interlacing”, or DCDI, a video mode algorithm that monitors edge transitions and fills in any information gaps that cause the jaggies. With DCDI, edges are smoother and more natural, and the overall picture quality is improved. Digital 3D Noise Reduction The DVR-810H-S includes a sophisticated noise reduction circuit which can achieve an amazing 6-10dB of noise reduction, without introducing artifacts or decreasing sharpness. You’ll experience a much cleaner picture that is virtually free of noise. *1 TiVo service is accessed through a standard telephone line or broadband connection and is available as a local call in most areas. In some areas, local and long-distance charges may apply. *2 TiVo Plus service requires subscription fee. Pricing, terms and conditions of TiVo Services are subject to change without notice. Receipt of TiVo Plus service is subject to the terms and conditions of the TiVo service agreement. *3 Requires upgrade to TiVo Plus and additional equipment. M D V D R E C O R D I N G Don’t be fooled by the sleek, low-profile design. These are powerful, next-generation DVD Recorders that make editing, recording, and playing DVDs easy. And fast. And fun. Here’s how. Advanced Disc Navigator The user-friendly menu system makes all the key functions really easy to operate. For example, you can set up a Play List or move a chapter with this menu. Want to find and play a certain segment of your “My Kids” DVD? Just select a thumbnail of that chapter and it will begin to play. Full-Motion Thumbnails with Sound Yes, this menu’s thumbnail images are actually shown in full motion, with sound! These mini-movies make it much easier to find what you’re looking for, and they make your DVD recordings look really professional. Think of a DVD with full-motion chapter thumbnails from your daughter’s childhood or your best friend’s wedding, and you can envision what a powerful menu this would make. Edit. Burn. Show Off. Repeat. So, you have countless hours of home video of your kids or a recent European vacation. You want to organize your footage and record it to DVD, so you can show it to family and T E C H N O L O G Y friends. And let’s say you don’t have the time or the patience to do it on your home computer. even easier to create a home video masterpiece. This Hard Disc Drive holds up to 102 hours of your favorite shows and home movies, giving you lots of options: you can store programs for as long as you like, and watch them when you want. You can delete them after viewing to free up disc space. Or burn them to DVD and play them for rear-seat passengers on the next long drive. Your choice. A Pioneer DVD Recorder is the perfect way to create your own home movie classics on DVD. Basic editing in Video mode lets you name, erase, lock, and unlock titles before finalizing the disc. Want to re-name the title showing baby’s first steps? Easy. The DV Cam-to-DVD Connection If your home movies were shot with a DV camcorder — and you want to burn certain parts to DVD but not others — here’s another great feature that will save lots of time. Just connect your camcorder’s DV input to the bi-directional DV input on the DVR’s front panel. Now, you can use the DVR’s remote to control your camcorder’s functions (Forward, Reverse, etc.) and easily find the scenes you want to preserve to DVD. The DVR-520H-S and DVR-320-S can control most brands of DV camcorders, unlike many other DVD recorders, which either don’t offer DV connectivity at all or don’t allow camcorder control via the DVD recorder. In VR mode (using a DVD-RW disc) you can do even more, such as erase part of a title or make detailed changes to chapters in a title. You can also set up a Play List — for example, a title for each European city you toured — which adds further editing capabilities, such as moving the position of a chapter, combining it with another, or dividing it in two. In Video mode you can finalize the disc and then select a suitable wallpaper to appear behind the disc’s menu during playback — so when you show your DVD to friends and family, it has a clean, professional look. And you did it all without a computer! And if your movies were shot in analog format rather than digital? You’re covered. Inputs for composite/S-video and left and right audio are provided for dubbing to DVD. Built-in Hard Disc Drive (DVR-520H-S) The DVR-520H-S offers the additional ability of editing content on its built-in 80GB Hard Disc Drive before transferring it to DVD, making it Advanced Disc Navigator High-Speed, High-Quality Burning Program duration (“real time”) 1 hour 1 hour 1 hour 1 hour Recording Mode used (on HDD) Name Corresponding Max. Additional time will be required, e.g. to create management information. 5 D V D R E C O R D I N G High-Speed, High-Quality Burning (DVR-520H-S) They don’t call this “burning” for nothing. The DVR-520H-S records from its Hard Disc Drive to DVD at very high speed. An hour-long program recorded in Basic EP mode takes less than 90 seconds when using 8x media. Yes, it’s that fast. You can even watch other recorded content on the Hard Disc Drive while backing up a DVD (high-speed copying). Disc Backup and Bit-for-Bit Recording (DVR-520H-S) The DVR-520H-S also features Disc Backup, a Pioneer exclusive. You can make a direct file transfer of your homemovie DVD to the unit’s Hard Disc Drive, and from that make as many copies of your original DVD as you want, all at blazing speed. This is a great feature even for videophiles who do their editing on their home computer and burn their material to DVD. And unlike other Hard Disc Drive-to-DVD recorders, it doesn’t recompress the video to another format. It makes a perfect copy that is bit-for-bit identical to the original, every time. Chase Play: Prime Time Starts Now Let’s say that you set the timer to record your favorite program, but end up getting home early, while it’s still recording. And you want to see it right now, from the beginning. Good news: you don’t need to wait until the recording’s done. With Chase Play, you can watch the program from the beginning as the rest of the program is being recorded. With either model, Chase Play lets you watch, stop, or pause a show that you’re recording. With the DVR-520H-S, T E C H N O L O G Y the Hard Disc Drive is handling both Chase Play tasks. But the DVR-320-S accomplishes Chase Play without a Hard Disc Drive, using a memory buffer and recording directly to standard DVD-RW discs (VR Mode)*. * Only when using DVD-RW Ver. 1.1/2X (1 – 2X recording speed) and Ver.1.2/4X (2 – 4X recording speed) Smart VBR (Variable Bit Rate Recording) This recording mode lets you choose the quality level/recording time that best suits you. Choose from Fine, SP, LP, EP, and Auto; Auto automatically sets the best recording quality for the time remaining on the disc. Both models have an improved VBR recording process for the best possible video quality in any recording mode. Virtual Liquid Crystal Tilt Mechanism When recording to DVD, it’s critical to have a precisely aimed laser beam. But sometimes imperfections in blank DVD discs cause the laser to lose accuracy, and you can get a less-than-perfect recording. Our new improved virtual lens tilt mechanism featuring liquid-crystal technology corrects for these imperfections, assuring the most accurate recording possible. Sophisticated Video Playback The DVR-520H-S and DVR-320-S feature PureCinema 2:3 Progressive Scan for a more film-like presentation when watching movies. A full set of connections is provided, including a component video output for higher-quality signal transfer to your TV. Both models offer a JPEG photo viewer that’s compatible with Fuji and Kodak discs, and CD-R/RWs burned from your computer. Superior Audio. Of Course. As with all Pioneer components, great audio comes built in. Both models feature Dolby Digital and DTS Digital surround sound outputs, along with high-quality audio and video D/A converters. DVD players and DVD discs have Regional Code classifications that determine their market area and compatibility. Discs and players must have matching codes in order to be played. All DVD players featured in this catalog are classified as Regional Code 1. TV Recording with Built-in Tuner TV shows and movies are among the most popular material to record — which is why Pioneer’s DVD Recorders include a built-in TV tuner. It’s easy to find and record your favorite TV program: use either Pioneer’s timer record system with its graphical interface and handy calendar, or the widely used VCR Plus+®system. 10:00 9:30 9:00 8:30 8:00 10:00 9:30 9:00 8:30 8:00 Chase Play: Prime Time Starts Now HDD Rec Play Type DVD-R/RW Rec Play Pattern 1 Recording REC Simultaneous Recording & Playback (different source) Pattern 2 Pattern 3 PLAY Chasing Play Pattern 4* Pattern 1 Chase Play (same source) Pattern 2* Chase Play 6 Simultaneous Recording and Playback * Caution: Only when using DVD-RW Ver. 1.1/2X (1 – 2X recording speed) and Ver. 1.2/4X (2 – 4X recording speed) media and “VR Mode”. M 7 D V D P L A Y B A C K PureCinema Progressive Scan (DV-578A-S/DV-275-S) Keeping it real: Pioneer’s 2:3 Pull-Down PureCinema Progressive Scan system, along with a 108MHz/12-bit (DV-578A-S) or 54MHz/12-bit (DV-275-S) D/A converter, retains more of the clarity and subtlety of the original cinema experience. DVDs of movies originally shot on film can now display smooth, high-resolution moving images that are free of artifacts and jagged edges. DVD-R/DVD-RW Compatible (DV-578A-S and DV-275-S) These models can play DVDs containing TV content or home movies that you’ve recorded in either Video Mode or VR Mode. Video Mode recordings, which can be burned to either DVD-R or DVD-RW discs, are playable on nearly all current DVD-Video playback systems. Video Recording (VR) Mode recordings, which can be burned only to DVD-RW discs, are playable on most DVD-RW-compatible players. DVD-Audio (DVD-A) and Super Audio CD (SACD) These advanced formats represent the highest level of audio on disc: high-density, highresolution music that is miles ahead of regular CD. The recordings are bigger, more detailed, and more open, and they’re here now. H I G H E R D V D T E C H N O L O G Y DVD-Audio (DV-578A-S) A DVD-A disc holds 4.7GB of data, seven times that of a regular CD. This massive capacity allows it to reproduce ALL of the music intended by the artist, without the limitations of a normal CD. The warmth of a DVD-A recording is reminiscent of the sound from vintage vinyl albums. Audio on a DVD-A can be formatted into two channels (stereo) at a 192kHz, 24-bit rate, which may be the highest level of quality you’ll hear in your lifetime. Or, into six channels at a 96kHz, 24-bit rate, creating a full surround field that swirls around you. You can play the high-density layer in your SACD-compatible home player, and the CD layer in your car or portable CD player. Super Audio CD (DV-578A-S) SACDs also deliver exceptionally detailed sound with the warmth of analog recordings. They hold about 4GB of data and currently come in three types (all three can be played by an SACD-compatible player): Single-Layer: One layer of high-density data is dedicated to either very high-resolution stereo (two-channel) or multi-channel music. Dual-Layer: Two high-density layers, otherwise the same as above. The two layers give you even more great music. Hybrid Discs: Two layers, but one layer is for high-density SACD music, the other for regular CD audio. The CD audio layer is the only type of SACD audio that can be played on a regular CD player. Why would you want a hybrid disc? * See notes on page 9 for details. D I S T I N C T I O N Pioneer proves once again that all DVD players are NOT created equal. With groundbreaking advances that can turn a B-movie into a masterpiece. Compatibility with next-generation audio formats. And convenience features that make great home theater simply effortless. With Pioneer you will hear, see, and feel the difference. 8 Disc Navigator (DV-578A-S/DV-275-S) Disc Navigator makes it simple to browse through digital disc content to find what you want to play. Press PLAY to start a slide show from the first stored folder/picture on a disc containing JPEG picture files. Adjust the image size to fill as much of the screen as possible, magnifying it by a factor of 2 or 4 if you choose. Disc Navigator also makes it easier to access and play MP3 and WMA audio files recorded on CD-R/RW discs*. Video Adjust Menu (DV-578A-S/DV-275-S) This makes it easy to fine-tune picture settings, including Sharpness, Brightness, Contrast, Gamma (for picture ‘warmth’), Hue (for red/green balance), and Chroma Level (for color saturation). Dialog Enhancer (DV-578A-S/DV-275-S) Set Dialog Enhancer at High, Medium, Low, or Off (default), depending on how much you want a movie’s dialog to stand out from background sound in the soundtrack. Equalizer (DV-275-S) You can also choose among Rock, Pop, Live, Dance, Techno, Classic, Soft, and Off (default) preset EQ curves, to suit the music being played.
