IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
WORK AREA
1. Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered benches and dark
areas invite accidents.
2. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the
presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks,
which may ignitethe dust or fumes.
3. Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away while operating a
power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
1. Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade
is wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one
way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still
does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Do
not change the plug in any way. Double Insulated [] eliminatesthe need
for the three wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply system.
2. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes,
radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric
shock if your body is grounded.
3. Don't expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a
power tool will increase the riskof electric shock.

4. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the tools or pull
the plug from an outlet. Keep cord away from heat, all, sharp edges or
moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords
increase the risk of electric shock.
5. When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord
marked "W-A" or "W". These cords are rated foroutdoor use and reduce the
riskof electric shock.
PERSONAL SAFETY
1. Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when
operating a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence
of drugs, alcohol, or medication. Amoment of inattention while operating
power tools may result in seriouspersonal injury.
2. Dress properly, Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long
hair. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose
clothes, jewelry,or long hair can be caught in movingparts.
3. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure the switch is in the OFF before
plugging in. Carryingtools with your fingeron the switch or plugging intools
that have the switch ON invitesaccidents.
4. Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the tool on. A
wrench or a key that isleft attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in
personal injury.
5. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
Proper footing and balance enable better control of the tool in unexpected
situations.
6. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, non-
skid safetyshoes, hard hat,or hearingprotectionmust be usedfor appropriate
conditions.
TOOL USE AND CARE
1. Use clamps or other practical way to secure and support the
workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your
body is unstableand may lead to lossof control.
2. Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The
correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed.
3, Do not use tool if switch does not turn it ON or OFF. A tool that cannot
be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
4. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any
adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventive
safety measures reduce the riskof startingthe tool accidentally,
5. Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons.
Toolsare dangerous in the hands of untrainedusers.
6. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly
maintained tools with sharp cutting edge are less likely to bind and are easier
to control,
7. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of
parts, and any other condition that may affect the tool's operation. If
damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused
by poorly maintained tools.
8. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for
your model. Accessoriesthat may be suitable for one tool may create a risk
of injury when used on another tool.
SERVICE
1. Toolservice must be performed only by qualified repair personnel.
Service or maintenance performed by unqualifiedpersonnel may result in a
riskof injury.
2. When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow
instructions in the Maintenance Section of this manual. Use of
unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance Instructionsmay create a
riskof shock or injury.
1. Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an
operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring. Contact with
a"live" wire will also make exposed metal parts of the tool liveand shock the
operator.
2. Keep blades sharp. Sharp blades will do the job better and safer.
3. Keep hands away from cutting area. When sawing never reach
underneath or behind the material being cut for any reason.
4. When you have finished a cut be careful not to come into contact with
the blade. Turn off the motor immediately.
5. EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN BLIND CUI-FING TO BE
CERTAIN THATTHERE ARE NO FOREIGN OBJECTS SUCH AS ELECTRICAL
WIRE, CONDUIT, PLUMBING PIPES, ETC., THAT MAY COME INTO
CONTACT WITH THE BLADE.
6. Some wood contains preservatives, which can be toxic. Take extra
care to prevent inhalationand skincontact when working withthese materials.
Request, and follow, all safety information available from your material
supplier.
7. Stay clear of end pieces that may fall after being cut off.
8. Do not operate the Cordless Reciprocating Saw with guide shoe
removed (Sea PIVOTING GUIDE SHOE section of this manual).
9. Do not attempt to plunge cut metal. Tool is not designed to plunge cut
metal and doing so may resultin riskof injury,

REPLACEMENT PARTS
When servicing use only identical replacement parts.
MOTOR
Many Porter-Cable tools will operate on either D.C., or single phase 25 to 60
cycle A.C. current and voltage within plus or minus 5 percent of that shown
on the specificationplate on the tool. Several models, however, are designed
for A.C. current only. Refer to the specification plate on your tool for proper
voltage and current rating.
Do not operate your tool on a current on which the
voltage is not within correct limits. Do not operate tools rated A.C.
only on D.C. current. To do so may seriouslydamage the tool.

If an extensioncord is used, make sure the conductor size is large enough to
prevent excessive voltage drop which will cause loss of power and possible
motor damage. A table of recommended extensioncord sizes will be found in
this section.This table is based on limitinglinevoltage drop to 5 volts (10 volts
for 230 volts)at 150% of rated amperes.
If an extension cord is to be used outdoors it must be marked with the suffix
W-A or W following the cord type designation. For example - SJTW-A to
indicate it is acceptable for outdoor use.

FOREWORD
The Porter-Cable TIGER SAW®is designed for cutting wood up to 12" thick,
metal up to 3/4" thick and various other materials, such as plastics, fiberglass,
hard rubber,etc.
SELECTING THE BLADE
For best performance, longer blade life, and smoother cut, select the proper
blade for the job. A wide assortment of Porter-Cable blades is listed in the
back of this manual.
When cutting metal always select a blade which will allow at least three teeth
to be engaged in the thickness of material,
INSTALLING THE BLADE
MODELS 735 and 737 with Quick-Change" Blade Clamp
1. The reciprocating shaft must be fully extended to permit access to the
Quick-Change" blade releasecollar(A)Fig. 1. If necessary,gently squeeze the
trigger switch to move the reciprocatingshaft to its outermost position (as
shown in Fig. 1).
Disconnect saw from power source before installing
or removing blades.
2. Pivot the guide shoe (B) Fig. 1, forward to improve access to the blade
clamp.
3. To open the blade clamp: rotate and hold the blade release collar(A) Fig.
2, counterclockwise (asviewed from the front of the saw).

4. Insert the blade into the clamp
untilit bottoms.Allow the release collar
to rotate clockwise to lock the blade in
place, (A) Fig. 3.
5. To remove blade: repeat steps 1
through 3, and pull blade from blade
clamp (while the release collar is being
held in the open position).

work the blade up and down while
rotating the clamp (in a counter-
clockwise direction).
If the blade breaks leaving nothing to
grasp (to pull it from the clamp), it may
be necessary to use another blade as
a tool to aid in removing the broken
piece (see Fig. 4). While holding the
release collar in the open position, usa
the tip of another blade to "hook" the
broken piece and pull it from the
clamp. (A thin, fine-toothed, metal-
cutting blade works best.)

Periodically clean the blade clamp with dry compressedair. DO NOT lubricate
the blade clamp. Lubricant can attract contamination.
Wear safety glasses while using compressed air.
MODEL 738
I_g7/_]'_'_l Disconnect saw from power source before installing or
removing blades.
1. Use hex wrench (suppliedwith Model 738), to loosen blade clamp screw
(A) Fig. 5, by turning counterclockwisethree to four turns.
2. Insertthe blade into the blade clamp until it bottoms, (A) Fig. 6. When the
blade is properly positioned:the hole inthe blade shank willalignwith the hole
(B) Fig. 7, in the backside of blade clamp.
3. Firmlytighten clamp screw.
4. To remove blade, loosen blade clamp three to four turns and pull blade
from clamp.

HOW TO HOLD SAW
The gear housing, intermediate plate, blade and pivoting guide shoe may be
made live if the blade cuts into live wiring within a wall.
TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ELECTRICAL SHOCK
THE SAW MUST BE HELD AS SHOWN IN FIG. 8, AND HAVE THE
RUBBER FRONT HOUSING COVER PROPERLY INSTALLED AND
NOT DAMAGED.

TO START AND STOP SAW
1. Make sure power circuit voltage is the same as shown on the
specification plate on the saw. Connect saw to power circuit.
2. Hold saw firmly.Squeeze trigger switch (A) Fig. 9, to start motor. Release
trigger to stop motor.

VARIABLE SPEED
The saw is equipped with avariable speed control (0 to 2600 SPM). As the
switch trigger is squeezed, the speed of the saw blade increases.
The lower speeds are recommended for most metal cutting, while the higher
speeds are recommended for wood. A few practice cuts at various speeds (on
scrap material), will aid you in choosing the best speed for obtaining the
desired results on your application.
DUAL BLADE MOTION (Model 737 only)
Model 737 has dual blade motion: you have a choice of straight reciprocating
motion, as shown in Fig. 10, or orbital motion as shown in Fig. 11. Straight
reciprocating motion should be used for all metal cutting operations,and for
wood cutting applications where finish is more important than speed. Orbital
motion is used for fast cutting of wood.
To set saw for straightreciprocating motion: rotate knob (A) Fig. 10, clockwise
so that the bar is vertical (arrow pointing to I), as shown in Fig. 10.
To set saw for orbital motion: rotate knob (A) Fig. 11, counterclockwise so that
the bar is horizontal (arrow pointing to U),as shown in Fig. 11.

PIVOTING GUIDE SHOE
The shoe (A) Fig. 12, serves as
a rest while making a cut. It is
pivoted so the saw may be
gradually raised to a position
perpendicular to the work as
the saw is moved toward the
operator.

BEFORE YOU START TO WORK
Select the blade best suited for the material to be cut (see ACCESSORIES).
For greatest economy, use the shortest blade suitable for the thickness of the
material to be cut.
Be sure the material to be cut is rigid. Small work pieces should be securely
clamped in a bench vise or with clamps to the work table. As the work
progresses in scrollor curved cut-out pieces, the material may be readjusted
to accommodate the movement of the saw. If the work is large enough, it may
be held only by hand across saw horses. The saw cuts freely with only slight
feed pressure. Forcing the saw will not make it cut faster.
SAWING WOOD
The TIGER SAW® is used much the same as a hand saw in that it is moved
toward the operator during the cutting operation. However, since the blade
cuts on the up-stroke instead of the down-stroke as in the case of the hand
saw, the good or finishside of the work should face down during the cutting
operation.
PLUNGE CUTS
The TIGER SAVW can be used for plunge cutting wood, plywood, wallboard,
and plastic materials. DO NOT attempt to plunge cut metal.
Clearly mark line of cut on the work. Grasp front housing with one hand and
rear handle with the other hand. To start cut, rest saw on shoe bracket, align
blade with the marked line of cut, (blade NOT touching work), as shown in
Fig. 13. Start saw. Using bracket as a pivot point, roll saw forward by raising
rear handle, as shown in Fig. 14. When blade has cut through the work,
continue raising the rear handle until saw is perpendicular to the work surface.
Keep saw in this position and move blade along line of cut.
SAWING METAL
When cutting angle, H-beam, I-beam, channel, etc., start the cut on the
surface where the greatest number of teeth will contact the work. To make a
pocket cut, drill a starting hole first. To extend blade life, cutting oil can be
applied to the work surface along the line of the cut.

KEEP TOOL CLEAN
Periodicallyblow out all air passageswith dry compressedair.All plastic parts
should be cleaned with a soft damp cloth. NEVER use solvents to clean
plastic parts. They could possibly dissolveor otherwise damage the material.
Wear safety glasses while using compressed air.
FAILURE TO START
Should your tool fail to start, check to make surethe prongs on the cord plug
are making good contact in the outlet. Also, check for blown fuses or open
circuitbreakers in the line.
LUBRICATION
This tool has been lubricatedwith a sufficientamount of high grade lubricant
for the life of the unit under normal operating conditions. No further lubrication
is necessary.
BRUSH INSPECTION AND LUBRICATION
For your continued safety and electrical protection, brush inspection and
replacement on this tool should ONLY be performed by an AUTHORIZED
PORTER-CABLE SERVICE STATIONor a PORTER-CABLE/DELTA FACTORY
SERVICE CENTER.
At approximately 100 hours of use, take or send your tool to your nearest
authorized Porter-Cable Service Station to be thoroughly cleaned and
inspected. Have worn parts replaced and lubricate with fresh lubricant. Have
new brushesinstalled,and test the tool for performance.
Any loss of power before the above maintenancecheck may indicatethe need
for immediate servicing of your tool. DO NOT CONTINUE TO OPERATETOOL
UNDER THIS CONDITION. If proper operating voltage is present, return your
tool to the service station for immediate service.
SERVICE AND REPAIRS
All quality tools will eventually require servicingor replacement of parts due to
wear from normal use. These operations, including brush inspection and
replacement, should ONLY be performed by either an AUTHORIZED
PORTER-CABLE SERVICE STATION or a PORTER-CABLE/DELTAFACTORY
SERVICE CENTER. All repairs made by these agencies are fully guaranteed
against defective material and workmanship. We cannot guarantee repairs
made or attempted by anyone other than these agencies.
Should you have any questions about your tool, feel free to write us at any
time. In any communications, please give all information shown on the
nameplate of your tool (model number, type, serial number, etc.).
