Explanation of Hard Disk CapacityDear user,While using your computer, you may discover that the nominal hard diskcapacity indicated is somewhat different from the disk capacitydisplayed by the operating system. For example, a nominal 80GB harddisk will appear as less than 80GB in the operating system. Thisdiscrepancy is not an error in hard disk installation nor any otherproblem, but a normal phenomenon of computers. This phenomenon isprimarily due to the following reasons:I.Different standards used by the manufacturer and operatingsystem when calculating hard disk capacityHard disk manufacturers use a radix of 1000, i.e. 1G = 1,000MB, 1MB =1,000KB, 1KB = 1,000 bytes. However, when identifying hard disk capacity, operating systems use a radix of 1024, i.e. 1GB = 1,024MB, 1MB = 1,024KB,1KB = 1,024 bytes. The standard adopted by your computer is that of thehard disk manufacturers. Since the standards adopted by the hard diskmanufacturer and operating system are different, the hard disk capacitydisplayed by the operating system will be different from the nominal harddisk capacity. For example, if the hard disk is nominally X G, even when it is completelyempty, the capacity displayed by the operating system will be:X × 1000 × 1000 × 1000/ (1024 × 1024 × 1024) | X × 0.931 GS9-S10 User Guide V1.0_en.book Page 3 Wednesday, July 23, 2008 5:53 PM
If a portion of the hard disk space has been used for some specific purpose, then the capacity indicated by the operating system will be even less thanX × 0.931 G.II.A portion of the hard disk space is used for specific purposesLenovo computers come with preinstalled OneKey Rescue System, so thehard disk has a special portion partitioned before delivery, which is used tostore hard disk mirror and OneKey Rescue System program files. The sizeof the reserved space for this partition varies according to the model, operating system and software of the computer. For the sake of safety, thispartition is not evident, which is commonly referred to as a “hiddenpartition”.In addition, after the hard disk is partitioned or formatted, the system willassign a certain amount of hard disk space for the system files. For the above reasons, the available hard disk space indicated by theoperating system is always less than the computer’s nominal hard diskcapacity.S9-S10 User Guide V1.0_en.book Page 4 Wednesday, July 23, 2008 5:53 PM

Cellular networks are used for data transmission, and access is usually provided by a mobile network operator. Various Mobile Broadband standards are in use by mobile carriers to provide this service, such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS, also known as W-CDMA), High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and many others. The biggest advantage of Mobile Broadband is the fact that it is accessible from anywhere you can get a signal from your carrier which nowadays is almost anywhere. Laptop computer with Mobile Broadband access can stay online on the move, and will not be tied down by a fixed line Internet connection.

26Chapter 2. Using Your ComputerChecking Battery StatusYou can determine the percentage of battery power remaining by usingWindows Power options. The rate at which you use battery power determines how long you can usethe battery of your computer between charges. As each computer user hasdifferent habits and needs, it is difficult to predict how long a batterycharge will last. There are two main factors:The amount of energy stored in the battery when you begin to work.The way you use your computer: for example, how often you access thehard disk drive and how bright you make the computer display.Using the AC AdapterThe power to run your computer can come either from the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack provided with it, or from AC power through the ACadapter. While you use AC power, the battery charges automatically. The AC adapter that comes with your computer has two basic components:1The transformer pack that converts AC power for use with the computer.2The power cord that plugs into the AC outlet and into the transformer pack.Attention:Using an improper power cord could cause severe damage to your computer. To use the AC adapter, do the following. Also, if the machine is producing errorcodes, it is helpful to have the error screen on or the message writtendown.Device drivers are programs that contain instructions for the operating system about how to operate or “drive” a certain piece of hardware. Each hardware component on your computer has its own specific driver. If you add a new component, the operating system needs to be instructed on how to operate that piece of hardware. After you install the driver, the operating system can recognize the hardware component and understand how to use it.Note:Due to the fact that drivers are programs, like any other file on yourcomputer, they are susceptible to corruption and might not performproperly if corruption occurs.S9-S10 User Guide V1.0_en.book Page 85 Wednesday, July 23, 2008 5:53 PM

The Directive determines the framework for the return and recycling of used appliances as applicable throughout the European Union. This label is applied to various products to indicate that the product is not to be thrown away, but rather reclaimed upon end of life per this Directive.Users of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) with the WEEE marking per Annex IV of the WEEE Directive must not dispose of end of life EEE as unsorted municipal waste, but use the collection framework available to them for the return, recycle, recovery of WEEE and minimize any potential effects of EEE on the environment and human health due to the presence of hazardous substances. The data on your computer, some of it sensitive, is stored on a storage device called the hard disk. Before you dispose of, sell, or hand over your computer, you need to delete that data.Handing your computer over to someone else without deleting the loaded software, such as operating systems and application software, may even violate License Agreements. You are advised to check the terms and conditions of those Agreements.Deleting the data from the hard disk is not easy. There are methods that seem to delete the data:Move the data to the recycle bin, and then choose the Empty recycle bin command.Use the Delete command.Format your hard disk, using the software for initializing it.S9-S10 User Guide V1.0_en.book Page 117 Wednesday, July 23, 2008 5:53 PM
118Appendix D. NoticesUsing the preinstalled recovery program, bring the hard disk back to factory-ship state. These operations, however, only change the file allocation of the data; they do not delete the data itself. In other words, the data retrieval processing is disabled under an operating system such as Windows. The data is still there, even though it seems to be lost. Thus, it is sometimes possible to read the data by use of special software for data recovery. There is a risk that people of bad faith may read and misuse the critical data on hard disks for unexpected purposes. To prevent the leakage of data, it becomes very important that you take responsibility for deleting all the data from the hard disk when you dispose of, sell, or hand over your computer. You can destroy the data physically by smashing the hard disk with a hammer, or magnetically by means of strong magnetic power, thus making the data unreadable. But we recommend that you make use of the software (payware) or service (pay service) specifically developed for the purpose.S9-S10 User Guide V1.0_en.book Page 118 Wednesday, July 23, 2008 5:53 PM
