Fladioshack welcomes you to the next generation or per—
sonel communication — the Family Radio Service (FHS).
FFtS is a new license-tree, twofway, short—range voice ra-
dio service that lets families and groups keep in touch with
each other on specific reserved channels.
Your FlaoioShack 14 Channel Personal FFtS 2-Way Radio
is a lightweight, palmszed radio that you can carry almost
everywhere and use to talk with another person who has a
FRS radio set to the same frequency as your radio.
Your radio has auto—squelch, which means you will not
hear anything on a channel unless someone is transmit—
ting nearby on the same channel. You can turn olt auto-
squelch to hear weaker, distant transmissions
Your radio has last channel memory retention. lt automati-
cally resumes on the last channel you monitored when you
turn on the iadio.
You can connect an optional speaker/microphone and
earphone (neither supplied. available at your local Ra-
dioshack store) to the radio.
Your radio’s other features include:
14 Channels — provide clear communications for up to
two miles.
4 user-Selectable Call signals — lets you select the
alert tone.
Channel Scan 7 can be used to find other FFlS users.

longer. remove the batteries Batteries can leak chemicals
that can destroy electronic pans.
Recharging NI-Cd or Ni-MH Batteries
Warning: Do not attempt to charge alkaline batteries.
Non-rechargeable batteries can get hot or explode if you
try to recharge them.
If you use rechargeable Ni-Cd or Ni—MH batteries, you can
recharge them In the radio using an optional AC or DC
adapter (both available at your local Radioshack store).
The radio’s DC Jack is only for charging Ni-Cd or NiAMH
batteries. Connecting an adapter will not power the radio.
You can recharge Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries inside the ra-
dio using a W. 100 mA AC or DC adapter and a size H
iltdaptaplugml connector (neither supplied). Both adapters
and Adapteplug are available at your local Radioshack
store.
Cautions:
' You must use a power source that supplies 9V DC
and delivers at least 100 mA. Its center tip must be
set to positive and its plug must fit the radio's DC Jack.
Using an adapter that does not meet these specifica-
tions could damage the radio or adapter.
0 Always connect the adapter to the radio before you
connect it to an external power source (such as an
AC outlet or a vehicle cigarette-lighter socket) When
you finish, disconnect the adapter from the power
source before you disconnect it from the radio.
Follow these steps to connect an adapter to the radio.
1. Rotate VOL/OFF fully counterclockwise to turn off the
radio. then slide at! the battery compartment cover.
2. Set CHARGE OFFION to ON.
3. Attach the Adaptaplug to the adapter so TIP reads
positive (+)
4. Connect the mergers barrel plug to the radio's DC
Jack and plug its other end into a standard AC outlet
or 12V power source.
Complete charging takes about 10 hours. When charging
is complete. unplug the AC or DC adapter from the power
source, then disconnect it lrom the radio's DC Jack.
Note: Ni-MH batteries take longer to charge than Ni-Cd
batteries.
Important: This radio can use Ni—Cd re-
chargeable batteries. At the end of a Ni-Cd
battery’s useful life. it must be recycled or
disposed of property. Contact your local,
county, or state hazardous waste manage-
ment authorities for inlormation on recy-
cling or disposal progmrns in your area or call 1-800—822v
8837. Some options that might be available are: municipal
curbside collection. drop-off boxes at retailers such as
your local Radioshack store, recycling collection centers.
