ordless telephone technology to give you superior audio quality and extended range.
The TAD (Telephone Answering Device) stores all messages on a microchip. This gives you advanc
ed capabilities over tape-based answering machines. For example, you can delete individual messa
ges and save the rest. Because your TAD is fully digital, there are no tapes to bother with, no tape m
echanisms to wear out, and no lost messages it power tails.
The remote operation leature lets you access your TAD lrom a touch-tone phone, and guides you thr
ough system operation with voice prompts

-Cordless phones such as this one require AC power to operate. When the AC power is otl, you can
not dial out or receive incoming calls using your TAD-727. To be sale, you should also have a phone
that does not need AC power to operate (not a cordless phone) so you can still make and receive c
aIIs it there is an AC power lailure.
‘When AC power is lost, the TAD-727 loses the security access-protection code connection between
the base and the handset. When power is restored, put the handset on the base briefly to restore thi
5 connection so you can use the handset.
READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATIO_N_
We have designed your phone to contorm to federal regulations and you can connect it to most phon
e lines. However, each device that you connect to the telephone line draws power lrom the line. We
refer to this power draw as the phone's ringer equivalence number, or FtEN. The REN is on the botto
m of your phone.
If you use more than one phone or other device on the line, add up all the FtENs. tt the total is more t
han live, your phones might not ring. In rural areas, a total REN ot three might impair ringer operatic
n. It ringer operation is impaired, remove one of the devices from the line.

INSTALLATIONS
MOUNTING THE PHONE
You can place the TAD-727's base on a desk or table, mount it on a standard wall plate, or mount it
. directly on a wall. Choose a location that is:
«near an AC outlet
-near a telephone line jack
' 'out ot the way 01 normal activities
‘away lrom electrical machinery, electrical appliances. metal walls or tiling cabinets, wireless interco
ms, alarms, and room monitors
-away lrorn other cordless phones
The base's location allects the handset's range. It you have a choice of several locations, try each to
see which provides the best performance.
Caution: The supplied FtadioShack adapter was designed specifically tor your TAD-727. Use only th
is supplied adapter. '
Notes:
-Your telephone connects directly to a modular phone line jack. It your phone line jack is not a modul
ar jack, you can update the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available trom your local Radio
Shack store. Or, you can let the telephone company update the wiring tor you.
~The USOC number ot the jack to be installed is RJt 10, or FtJt 1W for a wall plate jack.
On a Desk
Follow these steps when you place the base on a desk or table.
1.Plug one end of the supplied long modular cord into the TEL LINE jack on the back ot the base.
3.1nsert the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the DC 9V AC ADAPTER jack on the back ot th
, e base.
5.Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. PF (power Iailuro) flashes on the digital display.
6.Lilt the base‘s antenna to a vertical position.
On a Wall Plate
1.Plug one end of the supplied short modular cord into the TEL LINE jack on the back of the base.
8.Route the adapter's cord through the strain reliet slot and the narrow groove on the bottom of the
base.
4.1nsert the bracket’s tabs into the base‘s tab slots as shown, then press down on the bracket's clip
, s and insert them into the clip slots.
5.Plug the modular cord into the wall plate jack, then align the bracket's keyhole slots with the wall
plate studs and slide the base downward to secure its

For this mounting method, you need two screws (not supplied) with heads that lit into the keyhole slo

PREPARATION
CONNECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK
The TAD-727 comes with a rechargeable nickel~cadmium battery pack in the handset but not conne
cted. Belore using your phone, you must connect the battery pack, then charge it for about 12 hours.
t.Press down and slide oil the battery pack compartment cover as shown.
2. Lift the battery pack out of the compartment.
3. Plug the battery pack's connector into the socket in the compartment (the connector fits only one
way), and route the battery pack’s leads through the strain reliet slot, then replace the battery pack.

4.Fteplace the cover.
To charge the battery pack, place the handset either laceup or tacedown on the base. The IN USE/C

indicator
Important: Be sure the battery pack is properly connected betore you try to charge it. The N USE/C
HARGE indicator lights when the handset is on the base, even it the battery pack is not connected.
Notes:
°When you tirst use the phone alter charging or recharging the battery pack. the phone might not we
rk and you might hear three beeps when you press TALK. ll this happens, return the handset to the
base tor about 2 seconds. This resets the security access-protection code.
-It the battery pack is completely discharged, the handset might lose its security access-protection c
Ode To reset the code. return the handset to the base tor about 2 seconds.
0Using a pencil eraser. clean the charging contacts on the handset and the base about once a mont
illust.-24 shows how to clean charging contacts
-tl the battery pack becomes weak during a call, the handset beeps every 16 seconds and the TALK/
LOW BATT indicator flashes. When this happens, you cannot make another call on the phone until y
ou recharge the battery pack.
~About once a month. fully discharge the battery pack by keeping the handset off the base until the T
ALK/LOW BATT indicator flashes Otherwise, the battery pack loses its ability to lull recharge.
-If the TALK/LOW BATI' indicator does not light, but the phone does not work, recharge the battery
pack. (The battery charge might be too low to light the indicator.)
ell you are not going to use your phone tor an extended period of time, disconnect the battery pack.
This increases the battery pack's usable life.
-The supplied battery pack should last for about a year. When it loses its ability to lully recharge, 0rd
er a replacement battery pack from your local RadioShack store (see “Replacing the Battery Pack"o
n Page 35).
SETFING THE DIALING M0913
Set PULSE/TONE on the back of the base tor the type at service you have. If you are not sure which
type you have, once the battery pack is lully charged. do this test.
1tBe sure PULSE/TONE is set to TONE.
2.Litt the handset, press TALK, and listen (or a dial tone.
3.Press any number other than 0.
Note: It your phone system requires that you dial an access code (9, for example) belore you dial an
outside number, do not dial the access code either.
It the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service. Leave PULSE/TONE set to TONE.
It the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. Set PULSE/TONE to PULSE.
ADJUSTING THE HINGEF_t_S_
The TAD-727‘s handset has two different ringer volume. You can also turn of! the ringer on either or
both of handset and base.
- Turning OnIOtt the Ringers
To have the base ring when a call comes in, set RINGEFt OFF/ON on the back of the base to ON.

To have it not sound, set RINGER OFF/ON to OFF.
To have the handset ring when a call comes in, set RINGER OFF/ON on the handset’s left side to 0

Setting the Handset's Ringer Volume
At any time except during a call, press VOLUME A or 710 sel the ringer volume either high or low.

TELEPHONE OPERATION
MAKING AND RECEIVING CALLS
To make a call, tilt the handset and press TALK. When you hear the dial tone, dial the number.

To answer a call when the handset is on the base, just IiIt the handset and begin your conversation.
You can answer a call by pressing any key on the handset when the handset is not on the base.
Both the IN USE/CHARGE indicator on the base and the TALK/LOW BATT indicator on the handset
flash When you receive a call, and the TALK/LOW BATT indicator lights steadily while the handset is
in use.
To end a call, place the handset on the base or press TALK so the TALK/LOW BATT indicator on th

ADJUSTING THE HANDSET VOLUME
The handset's VOLUME control lets you set the volume you hear through the handset to one ol iour
levels.
To turn the volume up or down during a call, repeatedly press VOLUME A or‘ Von the handset. The
TAD-727 beeps once each time you press VOLUME Aor V. When you reach the highest or lowest
volume level, the TAD-727 beeps three times.
USING FIEDIAL
You can quickly dial the last number dialed. Liit the handset and press TALK, then press REDIAL.

'The redial memory holds up to 32 digits. so you can redial long-distance as well as local numbers.
oThe redial memory also holds pause entries. See "Entering a Pause"on Page l‘7.
USING FLASH
FLASH perlorms the electronic equivalent cl a switchhook operation lor special services, such as Ca
lI Waiting.
For example, if you have Call Waiting, press FLASH to answer an incoming call without disconnectin
g the current call. Press FLASH again to return to the first call.
Note: If you do not have any special phone services, pressing FLASH might disconnect the current 0
all.
USING TONE SERVICES ON ALULSE Llfi
Some special services, such as bank-by—phone, require tone signalsfll you have pulse dialing. you c
an still use these special tone services by lollowing these steps
1.Be sure PULSE/TONE is set to PULSE
2. Dial the service‘s main number.
3.When the service answers, press TONE (96), Any additional numbers you dial are sent as tone
signals.
4.After you complete the call, return the handset to the base or TALK. The phone automatically res
ets to the pulse mode.
USING THE INTERCOM
You can use the TAD-727 as a two-way pager and intercom between the base and handset. This is
useful it the handset is away Irom the base and you want to locate it, or it you want to have a conver
- sation between someone with the handset and someone at the base.
Note: It a call comes in during an intercom conversation, the person using the handset can answer t
‘ he call by pressing TALK, but the intercom call is disconnected.
Paging trom the Base to the Handset
To send a page from the base to the handset, press INTERCOM on the base. Th

Paging from the Handset to the Base
To send a page from the handset to the base, press INTERCOM on the handset. The base sounds t

MEMORY DIALING
You can store up to to numbers of up to 16 digits each in the TAD-727‘s memory. then dial them wit
h the press ot a lew buttons.
Storing a Number
Notes:
~An error tone sounds and the phone exits the storing process it you wait more than 30 seconds bet
ween each key press.
-If you receive a call during memory entry, the phone exits the storing process.
1.Press MEM (memory), then the TALK/LOW BATT indicator flashes.
2.Enter the number you want to store.
Notes:
olt you have pulse service and want to send tone signals, press% at the appropriate place in the seq
uence of numbers.
-Each séor pause entry (see "Storing a Pause") counts as one digit in memory.
'Each number you store can be up to 16 digits long.
3. Press MEM then press the number key (0—9) of the memory location where you want to store th
e number. A beep sounds to indicate that the number is stored.
4.For each stored number, write the person‘s or company's name next to the appropriate location
number on the supplied memory directory sticker. (Use a pencil in case you need to change the num
ber later.) Peel the backing from the sticker and attach it to the phone as shown.

Entering a Pause
In some telephone systems, you must dial an access code (9, for example) and wail tor a second dia
l tone before you can dial an outside number. You can store the access code with the phone number
. However, you should also store a pause alter the access code to allow the outside line time to conn
ect. To enter a 2-second pause, press HEDlAL at each point where a pause is needed. You can add
more pause entries for a longer pause.
Dialing a Stored Number
To dial a stored number, when you hear the dial tone, press MEM then the desired memory location
number (0-9).
Chain-Dialing Service Numbers
For quick recall of numbers {or special services (such as bank by phone), store each group of numbe
rs in its own memory location.
Dial the service‘s main number lirst. Then, at the appropriate place in the call, press MEM and enter
the number for the location where the additional information is stored
Testing Stored Emergency Numbers
ll you store an emergency service’s number (police department, lire department. ambulance) and yo
u choose to test the stored number, make the test call during the late evening or early morning hours
to avoid peak demand periods. Also, remain on the line to explain the reason tor your call.
USING A HEADSET
You can make or answer calls with hands-tree convenience using an optional headset that has a 3/3
2-inch (2.5 mm) plug. Contact your local RadioShack store tor a suitable headset.
Insert the headset plug into the “jack on the side oi the handset.

TAD OPERATION
You use both the base and handset to control the TAD. With the base, you can set the day and time,

4 conversation, turn the TAD on and oil, play and delete messages, and adjust the TAD's volume.
With the handset, you can change the remote operation personal identification number (PlN), set the
kind of outgoing message played, record outgoing messages, memos and telephone conversation. t

Note: While you are using the base to control the TAD, you can still answer incoming calls with the h
andset or another phone on the same telephone line.
SETTING THE NUMBER OF RINGS
You can select how long the TAD waits before it answers a call (2 rings, 5 rings, or toll-saver).

SELECTING AN OUTGOING MESSAGE
The TAD has two prerecorded messages. One asks the caller to leave a message ("Hello. no one is
available to take your call. Please leave your message after the tone“), the other is simply an annou
ncement and does not let the caller leave a message ("Hello no one is available to take your call.").
You can also record your own message (see “Recording an Outgoing Message").
Use the REC TIME switch to select which message you want. When you set it to either 1 or 4 (minut
es). the normal message is selected and the TAD records each incoming message for l or 4 minute

Recording an Outgoing Message
You can record your own message up to 1 minute long lor the caller to hear when the TAD answers

at prerecorded message. With the REC TIME switch set to ANS‘ ONLY, you can select either your 0

Hint: Do not tell callers that you are not home. Instead, say that you cannot come to the phone right
now.
Follow these steps to record your outgoing message.
1.Hold down OGM REC on the base for about 2 seconds until a beep sounds. The digital display b

USING THE TOLL-SAVEE
When you call the TAD with the number of rings to answer calls set to "toll-saver", it answers after ab
- out two rings if you have new messages (ones you have not listened to). If there are no new messag
es, the TAD waits for about five rings before it answers. This gives you time to hang up before the T
AD answers so you can avoid long-distance charges.
SETTING THE REMOTE OPERATION P_Il_\l
The remote operation PIN (personal identification number) permits remote access to the TAD. The P
IN can be any number from 00 to 99. The default setting is 99, but you can change it by following the
se steps.
1.Press REMOTE on the handset so the TALK/LOW BATI' indicator lights. The TAD tells you the n
umber of messages you have (it any).
2. Press PIN/If on the keypad. Then the TAD announces the current PIN.
3.Enter your two-digit PIN.
4.Press PIN/It on the keypad again. Then the TAD announces your new PIN stored.
5.Press REMOTE so the TALK/LOW BATT indicator turns off.
ACCESSING THE TAD BY REMOTE
While you are away from your home, you can use a touch-tone phone, or a pulse (rotary) phone with
a pocket tone dialer, to enter your PIN and do any of the following:
-Set the TAD to answer calls
oSelect an outgoing message
°Listen to your messages
0Record a new announcement
oRecord a memo
°Delete messages
oTum the TAD off
Note:_ You cannot access the TAD from another telephone on the same line as your TAD-727.
1.Dial your phone number and wait tor the TAD to answer.

The TAD automatically turns itself on to answer your call and beeps then turns oil when you hang
up (unless you set the TAD to answer calls).
2.When the outgoing message begins, press 96 then enter your 2-digit PIN within 2 seconds.
The message stops, and the TAD announces "You have xx new message(s)"(where xx is the num
bers of messages) or "You have no messages', then the TAD plays back the recorded messages co
ntinuously. When you have both old and new messages, the TAD first plays back only new message
s, then plays old ones.
3. During playback, you can press the number key for the command you want.

wering System is an example of superior design and crattmanship. The lollowing suggestions will he
lp you care tor your TAD-727 so you can enjoy it for years.
Keep the TAD-727 dry. It it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids might contain minerals that can
corrode the electronic circuits.
Use and store the TAD-727 only in normal temperature environments. Temperature extremes can sh
orten the life of electronic devices, damage battery packs, and distort or melt plastic pans.
Handle the TAD-727 gently and carelully. Dropping it can damage circuit boards and cases and can
cause the TAD-727 to work improperly. .
Use only a battery pack ol the required size and recommended type. Batteries can leak chemicals th
at damage your TAD-727’s electronic parts.
Wipe the TAD-727 with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemical
s, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the TAD~727.
Modifying or tampering with the TAD-727's internal components can cause a malfunction and might i
nvalidate its warranty and void your FCC authorization to operate it. It your TAD-727 is not periormin
g as it should, take it to your local RadioShack store lor assistance. It the trouble is affecting the tele
phone lines, the phone company can ask you to disconnect your TAD-727 until you have resolved th
e problem.
REPLACING THE BATTERY PAEIS
It you follow the instructions in "Connecting and Charging the Battery Pack"on PagelZ the battery pa
ck should last about one year. If the battery pack does not hold a charge lor more than 2 hours alter
an overnight charge, replace it with a new 3.6-volt, 600 mAh battery pack with a connector that fits th
e socket in the battery compartment. You can order a replacement battery pack through your local Fl
adioShack store.
Install the new battery pack as described below, then charge it for about 12 hours.
1.Press down and slide oll the battery pack compartment cover as shown.
2. Lift the battery pack out of the compartment. then gently pull on the battery connector to disconn
ect it. ’
3.Insert the new battery pack’s connector into the socket in the compartment and place the battery
pack into the compartment.
