Train your pet according to the instructions contained in this manual. Do not become overly confi dent your pet has become conditioned to the Outdoor Shields® system sooner than expected.3. Adhere to all cautions and warnings contained in any Invisible Fence® Brand manual.4. Never perform set-up procedures while the Computer Collar® unit is on your pet.5. All Invisible Fence® Brand products are designed for pet use only. Never attempt to use this product for any purpose not specifi cally described in this manual.6. Check the tightness of the Computer Collar® unit on a regular basis. Remove your pet’s Computer Collar® unit each night. This will prevent the possibility of any irritation the collar may cause to your pet’s skin. However, if this is not possible, please check the tightness of the collar each time you feed your pet by removing the collar and then replacing it back on your pet. A condition called Pressure Necrosis, which is a devitalization of the skin due to excessive and prolonged contact against the Contact Points, may occur if the steps above are not followed.7. Do not attempt to service any Invisible Fence® Brand equipment. Refer all service to your authorized Invisible Fence® Brand Dealer only. Unauthorized service or repair will void the warranty.NOTE: The low battery indicator will begin fl ashing when it is time to replace the batteries. An Outdoor Shields transmitter producing less than the maximum setting will get a substantially longer battery life.

It sends a signal fi eld up to 10 feet in diameter or a 5 foot radius. Your pet wears a Computer Collar unit that detects areas you have shielded and administrates a correction when your pet enters those areas.The Outdoor Shields® Transmitter has two control buttons and a LCD display. The two buttons control the signal fi eld range and 7K or 10K frequencies. The LCD display shows the signal fi eld range, low battery and either 7K or 10K frequencies.The Outdoor Shields Transmitter is powered by 4 alkaline D-batteries (Not Included). Under normal conditions, the batteries will operate the transmitter for up to one year. Check the LCD display every month to see if the Low Battery indicator is displayed.The Outdoor Shields Transmitter is water-resistant but cannot be submersed in water. Note: A correction is a training term used to describe an action taken to discourage unwanted pet behavior. The Computer Collar® unit applies a correction when your pet enters a shielded area or crosses the boundary of an Invisible Fence® Brand electronic pet containment system. Corrections are used in combination with training and rewards to alter unwanted pet behavior. Worn by your pet, the Computer Collar® unit detects areas you have shielded and administers a correction when your pet enters those areas.
4 www.invisiblefence.comImportant: Make sure your pet is not wearing the Computer Collar® unit when turning on the Outdoor Shields® transmitter.1. Power Up the Outdoor Shields Transmitter• Locate the battery door on the bottom of the Outdoor Shields transmitter. Loosen the 4 Phillips head screws. The screws will stay in the battery lid. Install 4 alkaline D-batteries (Not Included) and replace the battery door.• Turn the Outdoor Shields transmitter upright and open the lid exposing the LCD display and range buttons.• Press the up (+) button once to turn ON the Outdoor Shields transmitter. Adjust signal fi eld range• Determine the desired location and the signal fi eld range required (1 ft /30 cm minimum radius up to 10 ft /3.0 m maximum radius).• With the unit on, press the RANGE UP (+) or the RANGE DOWN (-) buttons to increase or decrease the signal fi eld range. Each segment of displayed bar represents approximately 1 ft /30 cm radius of range.• Once the range is set, place the Outdoor Shields® transmitter in the desired area.3. Verify the signal fi eld range• Make sure the Outdoor Shields® transmitter is on.• Holding the Computer Collar unit, start outside the range and walk slowly towards the Outdoor Shields® transmitter. Do not touch the correction posts at this time.• The Computer Collar unit will beep as it approaches the outer range of the signal fi eld width set in step 2. The beeping will be followed by a correction.• If the Computer Collar unit fails to beep, see the troubleshooting chart found on page 6.• Adjust range and/or relocate the Outdoor Shields® transmitter until desired area is protected.4. Selecting either 7K or 10K on the Outdoor Shields Transmitter• Open the lid exposing the LCD display and buttons.• Make sure the range is all the way down.• Press the (-) down button and hold it for 5 seconds until a black segment appears in the display.• Once the Black segment appears you have 5 seconds to change between 7K or 10K. • Pressing only the (+) button to change between 7K or 10K.• When the black segment is displayed by the (-) button = 7K and by the (+) button = 10K.• Once you have selected either 7K or 10K the display will return blank after 5 seconds.• You are now ready to adjust the range to the desired area.5. Checking for Low Battery• Open the lid exposing the LCD display and buttons.• If the LCD display is fl ashing with all six black segments showing it is time to replace the batteries.• After replacing the batteries you will need to check and see if the range for the signal fi eld is set to the desired area. 6. Fitting the Computer Collar unit on your pet• Move your pet away from the shielded area.• Place the Computer Collar unit on your pet.• To work properly, both correction posts on the Computer Collar unit must touch your pet’s skin.Position the collar strap high on your pet’s neck with the Computer Collar unit under its lower jaw.Operating Guide
www.invisiblefence.com 5 • To avoid having a collar that is too tight on a thick-haired pet, thin some hair away in order to allow correction posts to make contact with the skin. Do not shave the pet’s neck. Tighten the collar strap of the Computer Collar unit appropriately. Adjust the collar strap so it is snug enough to slide only one fi nger between the correction posts and your pet’s skin.• Allow your pet to become accustomed to its new Computer Collar unit. The collar must be removed each night during the fi rst month of training. This ensures proper fi t, and avoids the possibility of skin irritation.• The Computer Collar unit is waterproof. If the nylon collar strap becomes wet, it is recommended that it be removed from your pet and be allowed to air dry before replacing the collar on your pet’s neck.• You are now ready to begin your pet’s fi rst training session. Power Cap® Unit TesterWe strongly recommend that each customer obtain a Power Cap® unit tester. At least once a month, check the receiver battery with the Power Cap® unit tester.The Power Cap® unit tester measures the internal resistance of a Power Cap® unit and shows how much life is left in the battery.To test a Power Cap® unit with the Power Cap® unit tester, remove the Power Cap® unit from the receiver and put it into the Power Cap® unit tester the same way that you would put it into a Computer Collar® unit. If the battery is good, the green and red LEDs on the tester will both light. If neither LED on the tester lights, or just the red LED lights dimly, the Power Cap® unit needs to be replaced. BATTERY AND TESTER MUSTBE AT ROOM TEMPERATURETEST FOR 5 SECONDSReplace battery when green lightis out and red light is dim or out.Invisible Fence, Inc.Green RedTraining GuideFor pets trained to the Invisible Fence® Brand outdoor pet containment system• Use Invisible Fence® Brand training fl ags to mark the outside of the signal fi eld range.• This gives your pet a visual marker, similar to how it learned the signal fi eld range of the outdoor pet containment system.• Allow your pet to enter the shielded area on its own. By already being familiar with the training fl ags and the warning tone, your pet should react immediately, and back-up/move away from the shielded area. It may take several times for your pet to recognize and avoid the shielded area.• Praise your pet for leaving the shielded area.• You may need to adjust the signal fi eld range so your pet receives the warning tone earlierFor pets new to the Invisible Fence® Brand products• Use Invisible Fence® Brand training fl ags to mark the edge of the signal fi eld range. This gives your pet a visual marker.• Use Invisible Fence® Brand correction post covers on the Computer Collar® unit for the fi rst training session. This will introduce your pet to the idea of leaving the shielded area when he hears the warning tone.• Attach a long lead to your pet’s collar strap and show your pet how to avoid the shielded area by gently guiding the pet out of the range when the warning tone sounds. Note: Do not attach a lead to the Computer Collar® unit. This can result in pulling the Correction Posts too tightly against your pet’s neck. Attach a lead to a separate, non-metallic collar or harness, making sure the extra collar does not put pressure on the Correction Posts.• Praise your pet for leaving the shielded area.• Repeat this process until your pet reacts to the warning tone on its own. Computer Collar®Correction Post Covers• Remove the post covers on the Computer Collar® unit. Allow your pet to enter the shielded area on its own. Your pet should react immediately to the warning tone and correction, and back-up/move away from the shielded area. It may take several times for your pet to recognize and avoid the shielded area.• Adjust the fi t of the Computer Collar® unit as necessary as your pet’s coat and weight change. Your pet’s coat may change from season to season.
6 www.invisiblefence.com• After training is complete, remove your pet’s Computer Collar® unit each night to prevent irritation. However, if this it not possible, please check the tightness of the collar each time you feed your pet by removing the collar and then replacing it back on your pet.Troubleshooting Outdoor Shields® does not appear to work Ć Check/replace the Power Cap® unit in the Computer Collar® unit.Ć Check low battery indicator on the Outdoor Shields transmitter ă if indicator light is flashing, replace the 4 alkaline D-batteries (Not Included).Ć Check Computer Collar® unit fit to make sure posts have direct skin contact.Ć Make sure the Computer Collar unit is set to the same 7K or 10K as the Outdoor Shields transmitter ă See Step 4 on page 4 (Selecting either 7K or 10K on the Outdoor Shields Transmitter). Range is too low or too high Ć Check low battery indicator on the Outdoor Shields transmitter ă if indicator light is flashing, replace the 4 alkaline D-batteries (Not Included).Ć Adjust Outdoor Shields transmitter to increase/decrease signal field range ă See Step 2 on page 4 (Adjust signal field range).Ć Metal objects may distort the transmitterÊs range. Consider alternate location for Outdoor Shields® transmitter. Pet seems to receive no correction Ć Check/replace the Power Cap® unit in the Computer Collar® unit.Ć Check the signal field range on the Outdoor Shields® transmitter.Ć Make sure post covers are removed from Computer Collar® unit after training. Computer Collar® unit fails to sound warning beep Ć Check/replace the Power Cap® unit in the Computer Collar® unit.Ć Make sure the Computer Collar unit is set to the same 7K or 10K as the Outdoor Shields transmitter ă See Step 4 on page 4 (Selecting either 7K or 10K on the Outdoor Shields Transmitter).Ć Call your Invisible Fence® Brand Dealer.Note: If your problem cannot be solved by the Troubleshooting Guide above, call your Invisible Fence® Brand Dealer.Note: The use of any power source other than a Power Cap® unit will cause a receiver to operate erratically or fail. Failure of the receiver due to the use of an unauthorized power source could void the warranty. The use of unnecessary force may damage the case and render the Power Cap® unit inoperable. NEVER open a Power Cap® unit, dispose of it in fi re, recharge it, expose it to heat above 212°F (100°C), or expose its contents to water. Doing so can cause leakage or explosion and may lead to personal injury.________________________________________________Benefi ts of the Outdoor Shields® SystemFlexibility: Uses the same Invisible Fence® Brand Computer Collar® unit for both indoor/outdoor avoidance and outdoor electronic pet containment.Portability: Outdoor Shields® is powered by 4 alkaline D-batteries (Not Included). It can be placed virtually anywhere, landscape, pool areas, by the trash, etc. Adjustable: The Outdoor Shields® system allows you to control the width of the signal fi eld range with the touch of a button. The signal fi eld is the area around the Outdoor Shields® transmitter you want your pet to avoid. The signal fi eld range can be set to a minimum radius of 1 foot (30 cm), up to a 10 feet (3.0 m) maximum radius, in 1 foot (30 cm) radius increments.

However, there are some precautions you should take.Warning: Not every pet can be trained to avoid the established boundary. Sometimes even a properly trained pet may cross the boundary. Therefore, Invisible Fence®, Inc., as well as Invisible Fence® Brand Distributors and Dealers cannot guarantee the system will, in all cases, keep a customer’s pet within the established boundary. Accordingly, if a customer has reason to believe that their pet may pose a danger to others, or harm itself, the customer should not rely solely upon the Invisible Fence® Brand pet containment system to keep the pet from crossing the boundary. ________________________________________________ Battery DisposalSeparate collection of spent batteries is required in many regions; check the regulations in your area before discarding spent batteries. The Computer Collar® unit operates on one (1) Lithium (Li-MnO2) battery with a 3 Volt, 160 mAH capacity, replace only with equivalent battery that may be obtained from your IF Dealer. The Transmitter operates on 4 Alkaline-Manganese Dioxide (Zn/MnO2) batteries with a 1.5 Volt, 12,000mAH capacity.Computer Collar® unit: How to remove the Power Cap unit for separate disposal.• Use a thin coin to remove the Power Cap unit from the Computer Collar.• Insert the thin coin into the slot on top of the Power Cap unit and turn it counter-clockwise. The Power Cap unit will rotate up and out of the Computer Collar.• Repeat process to install Power Cap unit into the Computer Collar unit.
