REDCINE-X PRO OPERATION GUIDE

CHAPTER 1:
REDCINE-X PRO INTRODUCTION
REDCINE-X PRO
REDCINE-X PRO® is a professional-grade software application, designed specifically for transcoding and pre-editorial
image manipulation of REDCODE® RAW (R3D® ) footage. REDCINE-X PRO is a non-destructive application, enabling
you to make image adjustments—while preserving the original RAW format. This gives you the ability to return to the
original files at any time for transcoding, scaling, cropping, or correcting color.
REDCINE-X PRO converts selected RAW files to RGB color space using de-mosaicing and color matrix algorithms.
Timecode, white balance, and other metadata is maintained during RAW to RGB conversion.
Download the latest version of REDCINE-X PRO at www.red.com/downloads. The REDCINE-X PRO Operation Guide
can also be found in the REDCINE-X PRO Help menu.
The following programs are included in the REDCINE-X PRO download package:
RED PLAYER: Built-in media player.
RED Launcher: Prepares and opens R3D files in REDCINE-X PRO or RED PLAYER®.
RED TETHER: Tethering application. Go to "Set Up RED TETHER" on page 119.
RED WATCHDOG: Mac® OS X® menu bar tool. Go to " Use RED WATCHDOG" on page 125.

REDCINE-X PRO OPERATION GUIDE
RED ROCKET
The RED ROCKET ® enhances transcode and playback abilities of R3D files in various resolutions in real time speeds.
The RED ROCKET drastically accelerates transcode times for still image sequences and video formats (such as
QuickTime® and DPX) in all applications that support RED ROCKET.
NOTE: The RED ROCKET supports all MYSTERIUM ® and MYSTERIUM-X® clips.

RED ROCKET-X
The RED ROCKET-X® processes and transcodes files up to 5 (five) times faster than the RED ROCKET. A redesigned
chassis works to protect the card, which uses a full- length x16 PCIe port for installation in your Mac Pro ® ,
Thunderbolt™ expansion chassis, PCIe expansion chassis, or Windows.
NOTE: The RED ROCKET-X supports all RED DRAGON®, MYSTERIUM, and MYSTERIUM-X clips.
NOTE: The RED ROCKET-X supports HELIUM® R3D files with GPU assisted decoding.
For more information, see the RED ROCKET-X Installation Instructions at www.red.com/downloads.

WHITE BALANCE ADJUSTMENTS
White Balance is the process of adjusting how color is rendered in an image so that objects that appear white in
person also appear white in the image. You can set the Kelvin slider number to the color temperature of the scene. The
slider graphic indicates how the image looks at that Kelvin value.
For more information, see the Using White Balance to Control Color Casts article, available at www.red.com/learn/red101/color-cast-tutorial.

OFFLINE CLIPS AND AN EXTRA R3D FILE
SYMPTOMS
After mounting an SSD to your computer, REDCINE-X PRO shows that all or most clips are “Offline”.
The RDC folder for a clip shows two R3D files. The first R3D file is very small (a few kilobytes).
EXPLANATION
A “phantom” R3D file sometimes results from either of the following:
Using Pre-Record: An extra 12 KB R3D file is created when pressing the Record button too quickly.
Using an external start/stop trigger: An extra 12 KB R3D file is created. This file is very small (a few kilobytes).
In both situations, the expected R3D file is also in the RDC folder, and is completely intact.
POTENTIAL RESOLUTION
Delete the “phantom” file from the RDC folder on your computer. After deleting the file, your clips load correctly in
REDCINE-X PRO.

FOOTAGE RECORDED AT WRONG PROJECT TIME
BASE
SYMPTOM
Footage was recorded with a specific project time base, but the final video needs to have a different time base. For
example, the footage was recorded with a 23.98 FPS project time base, but the final video needs a 29.97 project time
base. If you export the footage directly from 23.98 FPS to 29.97 FPS, the video and audio is out of sync, since both
are sped up to match 29.97 FPS.
POTENTIAL RESOLUTION
Use a third-party application to properly convert the project time base of the video. Export the audio file from the
original file, and then manually sync it to the video that has the correct time base.

CONVERT TO REDCODE RAW (.R3D)
SYMPTOM
You want to work with R3D files but your footage is in another file format.
POTENTIAL RESOLUTION
REDCODE RAW (.R3D) is the native recording format of RED cameras. It is not possible to convert another file format
into the R3D format.
