1NovaTM 30 Wireless SupervisedPhotoelectric Smoke DetectorInstallation InstructionsGENERAL DESCRIPTIONNova 30 is a battery-powered photoelectric smokedetector with a built-in supervised wireless transmitter. When sufficient smoke is detected or the test feature isoperated, the detector will sound its alarm horn and thetransmitter will send an ALARM message. If the alarmcondition remains, the message will be repeated 2 ormore times (with 65 second intervals). The Alarmoutput in the receiver will remain activated until thealarm condition is cleared. The smoke alarm provides the following features:Smoke Alarm/base lock discourages unauthorizedremoval of the smoke alarm by requiring a screwdriverto remove the alarm from the base.CleanMe™ Self-diagnostics monitors its ownsensitivity and operational status. If the smoke alarmsdrifts out of the sensitivity range or fails internaldiagnostics, it extinguishes its LEDInternal Signal OutputsThe smoke alarm provides the following signals forinterfacing:• Alarm• Alarm restore• Low battery• Maintenance alert (Visible only)Selecting a LocationSelecting a suitable location is critical to the operation ofsmoke alarms. This equipment should be installed inaccordance with the National Fire Protection Association’s(NFPA) Standard 72. See Figure 2.A-8-1.2.1.C Are More Smoke Alarms Desirable? The required number of smoke alarms might not providereliable early warning protection for those areas separatedby a door from the areas protected by the required smokealarms. For this reason, it is recommended that thehouseholder consider the use of additional smoke alarmsfor those areas for increased protection. The additionalareas include the basement, bedrooms, diningroom, furnace room, utility room, and hallways notprotected by the required smoke alarms. The installation ofsmoke alarms in kitchens, attics (finished or unfinished), orgarages is not normally recommended, as these locationsoccasionally experience conditions that can result inimproper operation.Important: Regulations pertaining to smoke alarminstallations vary from state to state. For more information, contact your local fire department or local authority havingjurisdiction.
2In addition to NFPA 72, use the following locationguidelines to optimize performance and reduce thechance of false alarms from the alarm:• Locate ceiling-mounted smoke alarms in the center of a room or hallway at least 4 inches from anywalls or partitions.• Locate wall-mounted smoke alarms so the top ofthe alarm is 4 to 12 inches below the ceiling.• Locate in a suitable environment as follows:− Temperature between 40ºF (4.4ºC) and 100ºF(37.8ºC))− Humidity between 0 and 95% non-condensing• Locate away from air conditioners, heatingregisters and any other ventilation source that mayinterfere with smoke entering the alarm.• Mount smoke alarms on a firm permanent surface.• Locate away from large metallic objects when listedwith a transmitter.Installing the Alarm1. If you are using the alarm/base lock, remove thetwo knockouts on the mounting base. See Figure 3. 2. Slide the battery compartment cover away from thealarm to unsnap it and lift it off. Follow the ∗ To generate an additional right mode message, disconnect the batteries for 30 seconds and thenreconnect them.instructions on the canned smoke or use the followingsteps to test the alarm with smoke:1. Hold a smoldering punk or cotton wick close tothe smoke entry openings.2. Gently direct the smoke into the alarm for 20seconds or until an alarm is indicated.BE SURE TO PROPERLY EXTINGUISH THESMOKE SOURCE AFTER TESTING! The alarmLED should remain on and the alarm will sound atemporal rhythm until the Test/Silence button ispressed. The alarm automatically resets when smoke isno longer present.Understanding the Test/SilenceButtonThe Test/Silence button on the alarm performs threefunctions as follows:Testing = Press the Test/Silence button for 2 seconds. The alarm performs a sounder test and a sensitivitytest.Silence alarm = Press to silence the sounder duringan alarm. After a few minutes, the sounder and alarmresume if smoke is still present.Silence trouble chirp = Press to silence a troublechirp. The trouble chirp resumes after 24 hours if thetrouble condition is not corrected.
3Testing the Alarm SensitivityThe smoke alarm provides a sensitivity level test mode that allows you to check the smoke alarms sensitivity using theTest/Silence button and the LED indicator on the alarm as follows:1. Press the Test/Silence button on the smoke alarm for 2 seconds. Once the test starts, the alarm LED flashes one tonine times.2. Count the number of times the LED flashes and use the following table to determine the status of the smokesensitivity and what action to take, if any.Flashes Obscuration%/ft (approx) Indication Action1N/A Unserviceable hardwarefault detected. Reset unit and rerun sensitivity test. If the error persists, replace the unit.2, 3 N/A Detector is not sensitiveenough. Clean the unit. Reset unit and run sensitivity test.
