See the "NOAA WeatherRadio" section on page 7 for details.RECEIVETo hear calls from other users - adjust the volume asdesired. The radio can receive broadcasts while thePush-To-Talk button is not being pressed. Whether ornot you hear these broadcasts depends upon thesquelch settings. There are four squelch modes that can be used in thePBS "D-Series" base radio.•Carrier squelch lets you hear all broadcasts onyour channel strong enough for the radio to detect, and silences noise.•Tone squelch uses one of the QC or DQC “tonesquelch” formats available on the PBS. Thisallows you to screen out “on-channel” broadcaststhat do not carry the correct code programmed forthe radio.•No squelch disables all squelch operation andallows you to hear even the weakest broadcastson your channel.•2-tone paging can be used in conjunction witheither carrier or tone squelch to block out all callsexcept those sent specifically to your radio. Whenthe unique 2-tone sequence programmed into theradio is decoded, the radio will emit a series of ringtones similar to a telephone.Once a squelch type has been selected by the user, all channels will operate in that mode. The PBS "D-Series" radio will operate in tone squelch mode whenit is 1st turned on.To monitor the channel - press one of the volumecontrol buttons. When you press the volume up or thevolume down button, squelch turns off and all radiotraffic on the channel (or noise) sounds in thespeaker. To activate carrier squelch - simultaneously pressboth of the volume buttons and hold briefly beforereleasing. When carrier squelch is on, the radio emitsa “double beep.” The radio will now let you hear allbroadcasts on your channel. To activate tone squelch - simultaneously press bothof the volume buttons and hold briefly beforereleasing. When tone squelch is turned on, thehandheld sounds one beep. You will only hearbroadcasts that carry the same QC or DQC codeprogrammed into your radio. To activate no squelch - simultaneously press both ofthe volume buttons and continue to hold them down.About 3 seconds after the beep (or double beep), theradio will start beeping repeatedly. This means thatsquelch is turned off. Release the buttons. To restoresquelch, press and hold both of the volume buttonsuntil the radio sounds a beep or double beep.If you are unable to activate carrier or no squelch theradio has been optionally programming for MonitorLockout. See your Ritron dealer or contact Ritrondirectly to disable this option.QC AND DQC TONE CODES(Interference Eliminator Codes)Tone codes filter out static, noise and re-duce unwanted "chatter" on radio channels. When you operate on a frequency with atone code, you screen out most interfer-ence. This allows you to communicate withless interference and to hear only thoseusers in your radio group.IMPORTANT! All radios in the talk groupmust operate on the samefrequency and tone code.14500036_111902.p65 11/25/02, 10:01 AM6

Ifthis happens, ask the caller to repeat the message.TRANSMITNormally, you should not transmit until no one is talkingon the channel. This can be determined by monitoringthe channel prior to transmitting. To transmit - hold down the Push-To-Talk button andwith the radio at least 6 inches away talk into themicrophone. Speak in a normal tone, since talkinglouder will not improve the listener’s reception.Keep talk times as short and infrequent as possible toallow others to use the channel.OPERATIONRADIO ALERT TONESThe radio responds to certain instructions bysounding a beep or series of tones. These tones cantell you that the radio is working as you expect.Power On/Self Check “OK”When it is first turned on, the radio runs a quick“self test” to confirm basic functions. Whencomplete the radio will emit the channel beep andthe Channel Display will show the operatingchannel. The radio is then ready to use.Error TonesHowever, if the “self test” detects a diagnosticerror, an error tone sounds. The error toneindicates the radio frequency synthesizer ismalfunctioning. Turn off the radio and try again. The error tone will also sound if a channel has beenprogrammed for an invalid frequency. A long, low-pitched tone means the battery voltage is too low tooperate the radio. If you cannot correct a problem, consult an authorized Ritron service facility orRitron.Channel SelectWhen the Channel button is pressed, the radio willemit a short channel beep, increment the channel, and the channel display will show the newoperating channel.Scan ChannelWhen the Scan channel is selected by pressing theChannel button, the radio will emit the Scan beep andbegin scanning.Squelch ModeWhen you press and hold both Volume buttons atthe same time, a single beep will sound to indicatethat tone squelch is on. If the channel is programmedfor 2-tone paging, a "triple beep" indicate that thepager has been reset.Transmitter Time OutA low tone followed by a higher-pitched tonesounds and the transmitter automatically shuts off ifyou hold down the PTT button longer than 60seconds. The radio automatically switches toreceive mode.Battery Alert ToneIn battery powered installations, as the batteryvoltage approaches the minimum required "operatingvoltage" the radio will sound a short beep every 20seconds to alert the user that the battery will soonneed recharge or replacement. Once the batteryvoltage drops below the required "operatingvoltage" the radio emits a long, low tone and turnsitself off.OPTIONAL ALERT TONESThe PBS "D-Series" base radio can be programmedusing the RITRON PC Programmer for optional alerttones. See your Ritron dealer or contact Ritrondirectly for programming of these options.Courtesy BeepA short tone sounds at the end of each receivedtransmission to indicate that the channel is clear andyou may transmit.Busy Channel TX InhibitIf a user is transmitting on your radio frequencywithout your tone, you will not be allowed totransmit. The radio will beep a series of long, lowtones while the PTT is held down (like a busysignal).Transmit Clear To Talk BeepA short tone sounds after the PTT has beenpressed to indicate that the radio is ready for you tobegin talking.FIG-2: TRANSMIT/BUSY LAMPFIG-2: TRANSMIT/BUSY LAMPFIG-2: TRANSMIT/BUSY LAMPFIG-2: TRANSMIT/BUSY LAMPFIG-2: TRANSMIT/BUSY LAMPA Transmit / Busy Lampin the lower right cornerof the Channel Displayis lit whenever thetransmitter is activatedand blinks when thechannel is busy.14500036_111902.p65 11/25/02, 10:01 AM7

Either move the equipmentor use a remote antenna to separate componentssufficiently to stop or reduce interference.MOISTURE: PBS "D-Series" base radios are notwaterproof. DO NOT directly expose them to rain orexcessive moisture.CHEMICALS: Detergents, alcohol, aerosol sprays orpetroleum products can damage the radio case. DONOT use petroleum solvents of any kind; use a softcloth moistened with water to clean the case.EXTREME HEAT: High temperatures can damage theradio and its components. DO NOT expose the unitsto extreme heat or leave them in direct sunlight.EXCESSIVE TRANSMISSIONS: DO NOT hold thePush-To-Talk switch down longer than necessaryduring transmission intervals.VIBRATION/ SHOCK: Although your PBS "D-Series"base radio is designed to be rugged, it will notsurvive excessive abuse. Avoid dropping the radio. The PBS "D-Series" base radios generate RF electromagnetic energy during transmit mode. This product hasbeen evaluated for compliance with the maximum permissible exposure limits for RF energy at the maximumpower rating of the unit with the antenna included with the unit. To comply with Occupational/Controlled limits, all persons must be at least 5.7 inches from the antenna while the unit is transmitting. Other antenna mayrequire lesser or greater distances to meet limits depending upon their gain relative to that tested. Higher gainantennas are capable of yielding a higher RF energy density in the strongest part of their field and would, therefore, require a greater separation from the antenna. This product is not designed to be used by thegeneral public in an uncontrolled environment unless compliance with the Uncontrolled/General Population limitsfor RF exposure can be assured. To ensure that exposure to RF electromagnetic energy is within the FCC allowable limits for occupational use, always adhere to the following guidelines:• Use only the antenna(s) available from RITRON for these models. DO NOT operate the radio without anantenna.• Keep talk times as short and infrequent as possible. DO NOT depress the PTT button when not actuallywishing to transmit. These radios are equipped with an internal timer to limit continuous transmit times.• When transmitting, maintain a distance of at least 5.7 inches. DO NOT hold the radio in such a manner thatthe antenna is next to, or touching, exposed parts of the body, especially the face or eyes while transmit-ting.•DO NOT allow children to operate the radio. When used as directed, this series of radios is designed to comply with the FCC’s RF exposure limits for“Occupational Use Only”. In addition, they are designed to comply with the following Standards and Guidelines:• FCC OET Bulletin 65, Edition 97-01, Supplement C, Evaluating Compliance with FCC Guidelines for HumanExposure to Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields.• American National Standards Institute (C95.1-1992), IEEE Standard for Safety Levels with Respect to HumanExposure to Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields, 3 kHz to 300 GHz.• American National Standards Institute (C95.3-1992), IEEE Recommended Practice for the Measurement ofPotentially Hazardous Electromagnetic Fields-RF and Microwave.EXPOSURE TO RADIO FREQUENCY ENERGY14500036_111902.p65 11/25/02, 10:01 AM12
