Fuel Characteristics of British Thermal Units
 Definition of a BTU

– The quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one
pound of water one degree Fahrenheit

Many gas appliances are rated depending on BTU output
– The more heat needed, the higher the BTU rating

Residential gas water heaters (regardless of fuel) are rated
between 15,000 and 75,000 BTU
Over 75,000 BTU is considered Commercial Water Heater
Commercial Water Heaters are rated between 75,000 and
750,000 BTU
