1 | P a g e The APEX Pod is a wearable device that is used to measure the performance of elite athletes. The APEX unit consists of a ST Microelectronics Cortex-M4F central processing unit, with several different sensors to measure and record, via onboard storage, different characteristics of an elite athlete’s performance. The unit contains the following sensors: • GPS module • 3-D accelerometer • 3-D gyroscope • 3-D digital compass • Magnetic Heart rate receiver. • User Interface via OLED All sensors are continuously sampled, and the data is logged onto an onboard SD card in real time. In addition, the same sampled data from the sensors can be simultaneously streamed from the device via Bluetooth or UWB. Fig.1) Apex Pod
2 | P a g e Operating the Pod The individual pods are configured prior to their use via a USB serial connection to a computer running STATSports Apex application. This can be provided by a simple Micro USB Cable, however the 10/16/32 Way Apex Docking Stations are more commonly utilised for this purpose. Once the settings are configured the pods are disconnected and rebooted, at which time they will begin to search for GPS satellite signals. Once enough satellites are acquired the pod will start recording metric data and the Green and Red LEDs located above the power button will begin to sequentially flash. The OLED screen will similarly cycle between an estimated battery lifespan and the name with which the pod has been configured. While the pod remains in this state several additional pieces of information can be accessed by briefly pressing down on the power button. A short press brings up four symbols (See Fig.2) From Left to Right these symbols display; • Battery Charge Level (4 Segments) • GPS Satellite Connections • Heart Rate • Wireless Signal Strength Battery management ensures 6+ hours of activity recording and live transmission, and the devices can be recharged whenever necessary through usage of either a Micro USB or dock. To Power Down the Apex Pod, simply press and hold the power button until the sustained tone cuts out. This conserves battery life between uses, and prolongs the overall lifespan of the device. Fig.2) Apex Pod Symbols
