2SetupYour IBM Digital TFT MonitorTo provide the best performance your Digital TFT Monitor uses a digital video card which was shipped in the monitor package Accessories box. You may also use your own digital video card.Workplace PreparationThis section gives advice on what you should consider before you set up your monitor.Height The monitor should be positioned so that the top of the screen is slightly below your eye level when you sit at your workstation.Orientation Choose a position that gives the least reflection from lights and windows, usually at a right angle to any windows. The monitor should be positioned directly in front of you so that you do not have to twist your body to use it. Tilt the monitor to a comfortable viewing angle.Working PracticesThis section gives advice on how you can work comfortably and reduce fatigue.RestTake regular breaks. Vary your posture, stand up and stretch occasionally as prolonged use of computer workstations can be tiring.BackYou should sit back in your chair and use the backrest.HandsUse a light touch on the keyboard, keeping your hands and fingers relaxed. Allow a space in front of the keyboard to rest your wrists when not typing. Consider using a wristpad.EyesightWorking with monitors, in common with any prolonged close work, can be visually demanding. 3ENGLISHScreen settingsSet the screen brightness and contrast to a comfortable level. You may have to adjust this as the lighting changes during the day. Many application programs let you select color combinations which can help you to view in comfort.Unpacking the Monitor1. Put the box on a flat, solid surface.Use caution when removing the foam cushions from the monitor. The power adapter block has been stored in a recess in the RIGHT foam cushion and is connected to the monitor. Make sure the cable is not pulled while removing the foam cushions.2. Open the carton box and remove the Accessories boxes.3. Firmly grasp the two foam cushions and pull the monitor out of the carton box. (Refer to Fig. 1)4. Remove the power adapter block which has been stored in the Right foam cushion.5. Support the monitor while you carefully remove each foam cushion. (Refer to Fig. 2)The Accessories box contains the graphics card among others. For installation, see Graphics Card Installation on page 6..Do not support the monitor within the screen area. The Liquid Crystal Display is glass and can be damaged by rough handling or excessive pressure.6. Remove the polyethelene bag from the monitor.7. 4Connecting your MonitorBe sure to read the ‘Safety Information’ at the front of this User Guide before carrying out this procedure.1. Turn off your PC and all attached devices.2. Connect the P&D adapter at the end of the signal cable to the P&D port located on the back of the video card.You must install the video card into the computer before connecting the signal cable to it. See Hardware Installation on page 7 for installation.The AC adapter and P&D signal cable are connected to your monitor If you wish to change these or to fit a different stand, see Further Help on page 22.3. Connect the power cord to the power adapter first, then insert the plug into a properly grounded electrical outlet.4. Turn on the monitor and then the computer.5. Install the video card software by following the instructions in the Software Installation section on page 9.Switching on your MonitorSwitch on the power source and your computer. 6Graphics Card InstallationOverviewThe graphics card included in your monitor package uses a Matrox graphics engine to help the monitor provide superior performance with Windows, digital video and 3D graphics. To further accelerate 3D programs, your graphics card uses bus mastering and has hardware-accelerated features, including texture mapping, Gouraud shading and Z-buffering. This graphics card also supports more advanced 3D features such as alpha-blending, anti-aliasing, MIP-mapping, and more. Depending on the model of your graphics card, it supports display resolutions up to 1800×1440 and 1920×1200.Your graphics card is 100% VGA compatible and supports all VESA standards: VBE 2.0 (Super VGA modes), DPMS (energy saving), and DDC-2B (Plug-and-Play monitors).Also, depending on the model of your graphics card, you can upgrade it with more RAM graphics memory or multimedia hardware add-ons. 7ENGLISHHardware Installation1. Switch to the standard VGA display driverIf you're running Windows 95/98 on your computer, this step isn't necessary. If you're using another operating system (for example, Windows NT 4.0), see its documentation for how to switch to VGA mode.2. Open your computer and remove your existing graphics cardTurn off your computer and all peripherals such as your monitor or printer. Open the computer and remove your existing graphics card. (If you have a display adapter built into your computer's motherboard, it should automatically disable itself after your graphics card is installed.)3. Choose an expansion slot Most computers have different types of expansion slots. Choose an AGP or PCI slot, depending on the type of Matrox graphics card you have. Your system manual should identify the location of each type of expansion slot in your computer.Inserting your Matrox card into the wrong type of slot could damage your card, your computer, or both.If you have an AGP card, don't insert the plastic tab next to the connector pins (see picture) into the slot.4. Insert your graphics cardRemove the cover for the slot you intend to use. Save the screw for the mounting bracket. Position your graphics card over the expansion slot you've chosen. Push the card in firmly and evenly until it's fully seated in the slot. Take these precautions:•Before touching any electronic parts, drain the static electricity from your body. You can do this by touching the metal frame of your computer.•Don't remove a card from the anti-static container it was shipped in until you're ready to install it. 8The smaller port next to the P&D port is used for analog monitors.5. Connect the monitorSimply plug your P&D signal cable into P&D port on your graphics card. For details on connecting the monitor, see Connecting your Monitor on page 46. Restart your computerIf you're using Windows 95/98, it detects new hardware when you restart. If Matrox display drivers haven't been previously installed, Windows 95 reports finding a PCI adapter (even if you have an AGP card).•If you see the New Hardware Found dialog box, click “Do not install a driver”, then OK.•If you see the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next, then Finish.•If you see the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box, click Next à Next à Next à Next à Finish, then Yes to restart your computer.At this point, Windows is using a display driver that doesn't fully support your graphics card. 9ENGLISHSoftware InstallationThis section describes how to install Matrox software for various platforms.There are 7 installation diskettes in the package. Check if you have them all and make sure to insert the diskette for the correct platform when installing.1. Insert the diskette labelled “Matrox Installation diskette 1” into drive A: and then run MGASETUP.EXE.2. When prompted, select the language you want to use, then click NEXT.3. If this is a first-time installation, the setup program lists the software that needs to be installed to take advantage of your Matrox hardware. To begin the software installation, click INSTALL.4. When prompted, choose an installation type:•To install the complete MGA Matrox PowerDesk (recommended), click TYPICAL.•To customize the PowerDesk installation, click CUSTOM.If you click CUSTOM, the setup program prompts you for a destination folder and the PowerDesk options you want to install.After you choose, the setup program automatically installs Matrox software and drivers.5. Change the diskette according to the message and continue with installation. 6. After setup, remove the diskette in your drive A:, then click OK to restart your computer and for all changes to take effect.7. If this is a first-time installation, your display is using a 640 × 480 resolution with 256 colors. 12Software Setup - Windows 95/98The Matrox display driver for Windows 95/98 supports multiple displays with Windows 98. However, Matrox PowerDesk features are disabled in multi-display mode. To change your display settings while in multi-display mode, use Windows controls. For more information on multi-display mode, see Windows 98 online Help under "Multiple Display support".To access Matrox PowerDesk programs and online documentation, click àPROGRAMS à MGA MATROX POWERDESK. You can access commonly used PowerDesk features by right-clicking the Windows desktop background, then clicking MATROX DISPLAY PROPERTIES.
