Why do we have envlmnmentaIIy-Iabelled monitors?
in many countries, environmental iaheiiinq has become an established method terenceuraging ute adaptation of
goods and services to the environmentThe main problem as tar as monitors and other electronic equipment are
concerned is that environmentally hanntui substances am used both in the products and during their manufacture.
Since it has not been possible so far for the maiorhy of electronic equipment to he recycled in a satisfactary way,
most oi these potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter Nature.
There are also Ema! character'sfics cf 3 monilon stitch as energy unnsumplinn Ievals, that am impoflanl from both
the working and natural envimnment viewpoints. Since all types or conventional elemrtclly generation have a
negative ettect on the environment (acldic and cllmala-Influencing emissions. radioactive waste, etc) it is vital to
conserve energy. Eledronin equipment in otficea consumes an anomtous amount at energy, since it Is alien

Why do we have environmentally labelled computers?
in many mumries, environmental labelling has become an estahllshed method lor encouraging the adaptation M
goods and services to the anvimrimaiiL The main problem, as tar as computers and other electronics equipment
are cuneemed. i! Ihal envimnmanlfilly harmful substances are used both In Illa pmducm And during their
manlnlamlre since it is not so far posslbie to satisraotoriiy recycle the majority of electronics equipment, most at
these potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter nature,
There are atse other charactenstioe ot a computer, such as energy consumption levels, that are important from the
viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (external) environments
Since all methods of electricity generation have a negative ettect on the environment (e.g. acidic and climate»
influencing emissions. radioactive waste), it is vital to save energy Electronics equipment in ottices ls otten leit

What daee labelllng Involve?
The environmental demands has been developed by Svenskn Netursltyddstorenlngen (The Swedish Society tor
Nature Conservatlon). These demands impose resln'ctions on the presence and use or heavy metals, bromlnated
and tailbnnatad tiarne retardants. cFCsrrreonsiand chlorinated solvents, among other things. The product must be
prepared for mcycling and the manufacturer is obliged to have an sntnrenmanlnl pulley wltlch must be adhered to lit

The energy requirements include a demand that tile computer and/or dlsplay. alter a certain period or inactivi ,

computer shall be reasonable tor the user.
