The more bars you see, the morepower you have left.External LCDYour phone has an external LCD display on the frontcover. When the phone is closed, it indicates thatyou have an incoming call or message and notifiesyou at the specified time when you have set analarm by its backlight or particular icons on it.When you press and hold down one of the volumekeys on the left side of the phone with the phoneclosed, the backlight of the external displayilluminates. BacklightThe display and keypad are illuminated by abacklight. When you press any key, the backlightilluminates. It turns off if no key is pressed within agiven period of time, depending on the LCDBacklightoption set in the Setupmenu. Thebacklight remains on at all times when the phone isconnected to a Hands-Free Car Kit (optional).To specify the length of time the phone waits beforethe backlight turns off, set the LCD Backlightmenuoption; see page xx for further information.Service light The service light is in the top right-hand corner of thephone. Removing the battery1. If necessary, switch off the phone by holding downuntil the power-off animation begins playing.2. Remove the battery. To do so:➀ Press and hold the catch above the battery onthe back of the phone.➁ Slide the battery towards the bottom of thephone and take it away. 17GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd16Getting StartedUsing the BatteryYour phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ionbattery.  It comes packages with a partially charged,rechargeable standard Li-ion battery, and must befully charged the first time you use your phoneotherwise the battery could be damaged.Installing the Battery1. Place the battery so that the tabs on it align to thenotches on the back of the phone. ➀➁2. Press the battery down until it snaps into place.Make sure that the battery is correctly installedbefore turning the phone on.

Ask your localSamsung dealer for further details.Note: You must fully charge the battery before usingyour phone for the first time. The phone can be used while the battery is charging,but this increases the battery charge time. To get thequickest charge for any battery, turn the phone off.To charge the battery using the desktop charger:1. Plug the power cord of the desktop charger into astandard AC outlet. When the power is connectedproperly, the LEDs on the charger flicker brieflyand then turn off.2. Place the battery into the compartment of thecharger. Select one of the following two options:• Place the phone with the battery attached intothe front compartment. The left LED on thecharger turns on in red.• Insert a single battery (alone, not attached tothe phone) into the rear compartment. The rightLED on the charger turns on in red.3. The color indication of the LEDs on the charger isas follows:• Red: the battery charging• Green: the batter is fully charged4.  When charging is completed (the LED turns intogreen), remove the battery or phone from thecharger and unplug the power cord of the chargerfrom the AC outlet.
21GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd20GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteeddLow Battery IndicatorWhen the battery charge level gets low, the batterysensor blinks an empty Battery Status icon  atthe top right corner of the display and sounds a tone.If the battery level gets too low, the phone will turnoff automatically. Unfortunately, if this happen, you’lllose whatever you are doing, including dropping yourcall. Watch the Battery Status icon and make sureyour battery is adequately charged.Switching the Phone On/Off1. Open the folder.2. Hold down          for more than one second toswitch the phone on.3. If the phone asks for a PIN code, enter the PINcode supplied by the service provider. For furtherinformation about the PIN code, see page xx.The service light in the top right-hand corner ofthe phone flashes, and an alert sounds. When thesystem locates services, you can see the followingidle screens on the main and the external displayrespectively.If the phone is out of service, the No Service iconappears in the display. In this case, youcannot place and receive calls. You can try againlater when service is available.Note: You can change the display language viathe Language menu option under the My Phonemenu; see page xx for further information.3.  When you wish to switch the phone off, holddown         for more than two seconds.
23GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd22GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteeddWARNING!Do not switch on the phone when the mobilephone use is prohibited or when it may causeinterference or danger.Note: Do not touch the antenna on the phoneunnecessarily when the phone is switched on.Contact with the antenna affects call quality andmay cause the phone to operate at a higher powerlevel than otherwise needed.Your Phone’s ModeStandby ModeStandby is the most basic state of your phone. Thephone goes into Standby mode soon after you turn iton or whenever you briefly press        . When yourphone is in Standby mode, you will typically see thecurrent date and time. If you enter a phone number,you can press         to dial it, or press        to save itin the internal Phonebook. Press  at any time to return to Standby mode. Becareful; if you are on a call when you press  , youwill return to Standby mode, but it also disconnectsthe call. Press  several times or hold it down toreturn to Standby mode without ending the call.Talk ModeYou can place and answer calls only when yourphone is turned on. During a call, the phone is in Talkmode. While you are in Talk mode, pressinggives you a list of options referred to as “In-CallOptions.” See page xx for details on the options.Power Save Mode (???)Your phone comes with a Power Save feature thatwill automatically be activated if your phone isunable to find a signal after 15 minutes of searching.While this feature is active, the phone’s batterycharge will conserved. The phone will automaticallyrecheck for a signal periodically. To manually force the phone recheck for a signal,press any key. A message on the display let youknow when your phone is operating in Power SaveMode.Lock ModeWhen you lock your phone by using the Lock Phonemenu option (see page xx), you cannot use thephone. Even in Lock mode, you can receive messagesand calls, but cannot place an outgoing call until youunlock the phone. To unlock the phone temporarily, enter the password.The phone returns to Standby mode.

The call time, length of the call displays with thedialed number. If the number is stored in yourPhonebook, the name is displayed. If there is nomatch, you can press   and save the number tothe Phonebook. For further information about  savingthe number, see page xx.OR, simply close the phone to end a call.Redialing the Last NumberTo redial the last number you dialed or received,press and hold         down.The phone stores the records of the last 60 callsmade to or from your phone so that you search forthe desired number at any time. Making a Call from the PhonebookYou can store the phone numbers called regularly inphone memory, called Phonebook. You then simplyrecall the number to dial. For further informationabout the Phonebook, refer to page xx.Saving a Number with a Name in thePhonebook1. Press        after ending a call or entering thephone number you want to save by using thenumber keypad.2. Select the desired label for the number bypressing the navigation keys and press       . The five labels, Home, Mobile, Office, EtcandFax are available.3. Enter a name up to 16 characters.For further information about entering characters,see page xx.4. Press         to move through the fields and fill ineach field as needed. You can enter a speed dial number from 000 to999 in the box at the right side of the label, andadd a number in the Phone Number field. In the E-mailfield, you can enter an e-mailaddress.In the No Group field, select the desired callergroup by pressing         or        . The ring melodyfor the group also appears.In the Memofield, enter the memo to remind youof the person.4. Finding and Dialing a Number from thePhonebook1. Press and hold down         in Standby mode. Thelist of all names in the Phonebook displays .2. Press        or         to scroll to the desired name.3. Press        or         to find the desired number.4. Press         to place a call to the selected number.Press        to view the details about the selectedname.5.  When you view the details about the selectedname, pressing        displays the followingoptions.• Edit: allows you to edit the selected nameentry.• Delete Item: deletes the selected name entry.While scrolling through the Phonebook list, you canaccess the following options by  pressing      .Edit: allows you to edit the selected name entry.Delete Name: deletes the selected name entry.New Register: allows you to store a new nameentry.You can find a number by using the specificinformation, such as speed dial number, name orgroup. Instead of manually entering thenumbers each time, you can store the numbers inyour Phonebook, separated by special characterscalled pauses.Note: More than one hard pauses can be enteredto extend the length of a pause. For example, twoconsecutive pauses cause a total pause time oftwo seconds. However, keep in mind that pausescount as digits towards the 32 digit dialingmaximum.Storing Pauses in a Phonebook EntryTo store a number in your Phonebook that containspauses:1. Enter the phone number you want to store, such asthe bank’s teleservice phone number.2. Press  . A “p” displays.3. Enter the digits that need to follow the pause,such as your account number.4. Store the number in your Phonebook as younormally would by pressing        and followingfrom step 2 on page xx.
Pause Dialing from a Stored Phonebook Entry1. Dial the number from the Phonebook.2. Wait for the appropriate prompt from the systemyou are calling. When prompted, press  tosend the DTMF number that follows your hardpause.3. “SENDING DTMF” flashes on the display and thetransmitted tone sounds.Manual Pause DialingYou can enter pauses manually during the dialingprocess.1. Enter the phone number of the service you want tocall, such as a bank’s teleservice phone number.2. Press  to enter a hard pause. The phonedisplays a “p” meaning a hard pause. 3. Enter the number to be sent after the pause andthen  press         to dial the first number. 4. After connecting, press  again at the prompt totransmit the additional number.32CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnss33CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssAdjusting the VolumeDuring a call, if you want to adjust the voice volume,use the volume keys on the left side of the phone. Press       to increase and      to decrease the volume.The illustration on the display shows all eight levels(the more bars, the louder). In Standby mode, you can adjust the key tone volumeby using these keys.
If the caller can be identified, the caller’s phonenumber or name, if stored in your Phonebook,appears at the bottom of the display. 1. If necessary, open the folder. Press         to answera call.2. End the call by closing the folder or pressing       .Notes:• You can answer a call while using the phonebookor menu features. You may not utilize all of thesefunctions at all times. Many of the in-call options arenetwork services. Press         during a call to access the following in-call options.Phonebook: allows you to access the Phonebookmenu. See page xx for further information.Messages: allows you to access the MsgManagermenu. See page xx for further information.Mic Mute allows you to switch your phone’s microphone off, so that the other party cannot hearyou. Example:  You wish to say something to anotherperson in the room but do not want the other party tohear you.No Key Tone: does not transmit the key tones. Itallows you to press keys without hearing annoyingkey tones during a call.Send Own Number: sends DTMF tones of yournumber.Cannot check these onthe current phone.
37CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnss36CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssViewing Missed CallsIf you fail to answer a call for any reason, the phoneindicates a missed call by displaying a textnotification on the screen. Additionally, if the callerinformation is available, a Missed entry is created,and the screen displays the phone number of themost recent missed call.When the display informs you of the call you missed,press         to call the displayed number or        toclear the message and return to Standby mode.To view the missed calls, access the Call Receivedmenu option (Menu 3-3). The missed calls areindicated by the icon  .Call ForwardingThis feature provides the option of forwardingincoming calls to another phone number, even whileyour phone is off. Activating Call Forwarding doesnot affect outgoing calls made from this phone.Contact your service provider to activate CallForwarding.Send: Send DTMF: sends DTMF tones of thecurrently displayed number. DTMF (Dual Tone MultiFrequency) tones can be used to control electronicphone services such as bank-by-phone or voice mail.During a call, key in the digits you want to send asDTMF tones, for example, the bank account numberand password. Then, press        .Quick-switching to Manner ModeManner mode disables all sounds on the phone. Thisfeature is best used in situations where the phonemight disturb others, such as a meeting, library ortheater. You can switch your phone to Manner modewith one touch of a key.To enter Manner mode, press and hold downuntil “Switch to Manner Mode” appears with theVibration icon  .Pressing and holding down         once again exitsManner mode.

To answer the call, press       . The phone connectsthe calling party, and places the current party onhold.2. Press         again to switch between two parties.Three-Way CallingThis feature enables you to conduct conference callswith two separate parties at the same time. Thephone records only the first party into the OutgoingCalls Log. But, you are billed airtime for each of theoutgoing calls separately.
