Those guidelines are consistent with the safetystandards previously set by both U.S. and international standardsbodies. The design of this phone complies with the FCC guidelinesand these international standards. Use only the supplied antenna or one that is approved.Unauthorized antennas, modifications, or attachments could impaircall quality, damage the phone, or result in a violation of FCCregulations.Do not use the phone with a damaged antenna. If a damagedantenna comes into contact with the skin, a minor burn may result.Please contact your local dealer for a replacement antenna.Body-worn OperationThis device was tested for typical body-worn operations with the back        of the phone kept 1.5 cm. from the body.  To maintain compliance  with FCC RF exposure requirements, use only belt-clips, holstersor similar accessories that maintain at least a 0.59 inch (1.5 cm.) separation distance, between the user's body and the back of the phone, includingthe antenna, whether extended or retracted. IconsText andgraphic areaSoft keyindicatorsEnters numbers, letters and some specialcharacters.In Standby Mode, initiates the voice diallingfeature when held down.While entering text, allows you to change thecase.Also, use this key for the special star callingfeature.In Standby Mode, enters or exits the silentmode when held down.Also, use this key when you make a call toan automated system, especially whenusing teleservices.Key(s) Functions (continued)~Ends a call. Also switches the phone on andoff when held down. 15YYoouurr  PPhhoonnee14YYoouurr  PPhhoonneeExternal DisplayYour phone has an external display on the folder.When the folder is closed, it indicates that you havean incoming call or message. It also alerts you whenyou have set an alarm at the specified time by turningits backlight on and displaying the corresponding icon.BacklightThe display and the keypad are illuminated by abacklight. When you press any key or open the folder,the backlight illuminates. It turns off if no key ispressed within a given period of time, depending onthe Backlight option set in the Display menu. To specify the length of time for which the backlight isactive, set the Backlight menu (Menu 5-6); see pagexx for further details.Note: In Standby Mode or Talk Mode, the displayautomatically turns off after some time,depending on your setting in the Backlightmenu to conserve your battery power. Pressany key to turn the display on.CameraThe camera module on the top left of your phoneallows you to take a picture while on the move.For further details about the Camera feature, see pagexx.Roaming: Appears when you are out ofyour home area and have logged onto adifferent network, when travelling in othercountries, for example.Ringer On: Appears when you set theringer volume for calls to one from Level 1to Level 8 or to 1-Beep.Ringer Off: Appears when the ringervolume is turned off.Digital Mode: Indicates when the phoneis logged onto a digital network. Analogue Mode: Indicates when thephone is logged onto an analogue network. 1x Mode: Indicates when the phone is inthe 1x mode. Battery Status: Shows the level of yourbattery. The more bars you see, the morepower you have left.Alarm: Appears when you set an alarm toring at a specified time.Vibration: Appears when you set theringer volume for calls to Vibrate orHigh+Vib or when the phone is in thevibrate mode.
17GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd16Getting StartedUsing a BatteryYour Samsung phone comes packaged with a partiallycharged, rechargeable Lithium Ion (Li-ion) battery.Installing the battery 1. Place the battery back on the phone so that its tabsmatch the slots on the phone.2. Press the battery down until it snaps into place.Make sure that the battery is correctly installedbefore switching on the phone.Removing the battery1. If necessary, switch off the phone by holding downthe  key until the power-off image displays.2. To remove the battery: ➀ Pull the catch above the battery toward the topof the phone and hold it in that position.➁ Lift the battery away, as shown.Charging the BatteryThe travel adapter is provided with your phone toallow you to charge your phone’s battery from astandard AC wall outlet. Use only approved batteriesand chargers.Note: You need to fully charge the battery beforeusing your phone for the first time.You can use your phone while the battery is charging,but this increases time it will take to charge thebattery. An “empty” standard battery can be fullycharged in approximately 4 hours.➀➁

With the battery in position on the phone, plug theconnector form the travel adapter into the jack atthe bottom of the phone.2. Plug the adapter into a standard wall outlet. The battery begins charging immediately.3. When charging is finished, unplug the adapter fromboth the power outlet and the phone by pressing thegrey tabs on both sides of the connector (see ➀)and pulling the connector out (see ➁).Note: You must unplug the adapter before removingthe battery from the phone during charging;otherwise, the phone could be damaged.➀➀➁Low Battery IndicatorYou can easily tell if your battery needs to berecharged by checking the Battery Status icon ( ) atthe upper-right corner of your phone’s display. Thepresence of all three bars indicates a full charge, twobars indicates a smaller charge, and one bar indicatesan even smaller charge. When the battery charge level becomes low, thebattery sensor blinks an empty Battery Status icon() and sounds a warning tone. If the battery levelgets too low, the phone automatically turns off. Whenthis happens, you lose whatever you are doing andyour phone call cuts off. Watch the Battery Status iconand make sure that your battery is adequately charged.Battery Talk Time and Standby timeBattery times can vary depending on operatingconditions, usage, signal strength and backlightsetting. Press and hold the  key until the power-onimage displays to switch the phone on.The service light on the phone flashes and an alertsounds. When the system locates services, thegreeting message displays along with the date andtime. You can now place and receive calls.If the phone is out of service, the No Service icon() appears on the display. In this case, youcannot make and receive calls. You can try againlater when service is available.Note: You can change the display language. Tochange the language, use the Languagemenu (Menu 5-1). For further details, seepage xx.2. When you wish to switch the phone off, hold downthe  key more than two seconds.WARNING!Do not switch the phone on when mobile phone useis prohibited or when it may cause interference ordanger.Note: As with any other radio-transmitting device,do not touch the antenna unnecessarily whenthe phone is switched on. These functions are arranged inmenus and sub-menus, accessed using the two softkeys marked       and      . Each menu and sub-menuallows you to view and alter the settings of aparticular function.The roles of the soft keys vary according to thefunction you are currently using; the label on thebottom line of the display just above each keyindicates its current role.Example:Press the left soft keyto access Menu Mode. Press the right soft keyto find a number inyour PhonebookService ProviderThe 13 May 10:30Menu               FindYour Phone’s ModesStandby ModeStandby is the most basic state of your phone. Thephone goes into Standby Mode after you turn it on orwhenever you briefly press the  key. When yourphone is in Standby Mode, you will typically see thegreeting message and the current date and time. If youenter a phone number, you can press the  key todial it or press the Save soft key to save it in theinternal Phonebook. Press the  key at any time to return to StandbyMode. Be careful; if you are on a call when you pressthe  key, the call disconnects and the phonereturns to Standby Mode. Talk ModeYou can place and answer calls only when your phoneis turned on. During a call, the phone is in the talkmode. While you are in the talk mode, pressing theOptions soft key gives you a list of options. See pagexx for details.Position Only
25GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd24GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteeddPower Save ModeYour phone comes with a Power Save feature thatautomatically turns off the display when you don’t usethe phone. While this feature is active, the phone’sbattery charge is conserved.The display switches off if no key is pressed withinone minute after the backlight turns off. You can pressany key to activate the display. phone to recheck for asignal, press any key. Lock ModeWhen you lock your phone using the Lock Phonemenu (Menu 8-3-1) in the Settings menu, you cannotuse the phone. In the lock mode, you can receivemessages and calls, but you cannot place an outgoingcall until you unlock the phone. To unlock the phone,you need to enter the lock code.For details about locking and unlocking your phone,see page xx. Vibrate Mode Vibrate Mode disables all sounds on the phone. Thisfeature is best used in situations where the phonemight disturb others, such as in a meeting, at a libraryor in a theater. Your phone can be set to the vibratemode with a press of a key in Standby Mode.To enter the silent mode, press and hold the  keyuntil “Change to Vibrate Mode” and the Vibration icon() appear.To exit and reactivate the previous sound settings,press and hold the  key until “Cancel Vibrate mode”appears. The Vibration icon no longer displays.
27CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnss26Call FunctionsMaking a CallIn Standby Mode, enter the area code and phonenumber and press the  key.Note: If the Auto Redial menu (Menu 8-1-1) have beenenabled, the phone automatically retries tomake the call when the line is busy or theremote person does not answer. See page xx.While entering a number, press the Options soft keyto use the following options:Call: places a call to the number.Save: allows you to save the number in Phonebook.Find: allows you to find a number from Phonebook.Hard Pause: enters a hard pause.Notes: • When you enter a number corresponding to aPhonebook location, the Speed Dial option isavailable. For details about speed dialling, see pagexx.• When you enter four digits, the 4-digit Dial option isavailable. For details about four-digit dialling, seepage xx.Correcting the NumberTo clear the Presslast digit displayed CLR key.whole display  CLR key for more thanone second.Ending a CallWhen you want to finish your call, briefly press thekey or close the folder.If you end the call by pressing the  key, the calltime, or the length of the call, displays briefly and thephone returns to Standby Mode.Emergency DiallingYou can place emergency calls from your emergencynumber list even if your phone is locked. For more information about emergency numbers, seepage xx.
28CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssRedialling the Last NumberTo redial the last call you made or received, press thekey twice quickly.Your phone stores the ten numbers each of the lastmissed, received and dialled calls. To recall any ofthese numbers:1. In Standby Mode, press the key. The list of theoutgoing calls displays.2. Press the Left or Right key to scroll to the call typeyou want.Note: When a list is empty, the next available listdisplays.3. Press the Up or Down key until you find the requiredname or number.4. Press the  key to dial the number displayed.Making a Call from PhonebookYou can store the phone numbers called regularly inthe memory, which is called Phonebook. You thensimply recall the number to dial. For further information about the Phonebook feature,see page xx.29CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssPrepend DiallingThe prepend option lets you add digits, such as areacodes and network feature activation codes, to aphone number that is in your Phonebook. To prepend a phone number stored in your phone:1. Press the Find soft key to access the Phonebookentries.2. Press the Up or Down key to scroll to the numberyou want and press the Select soft key.3. Press the Options soft key to access the options.4. Press the 3key to select the Prepend option.5. Enter the area code or feature code.6. Press the  key or the Call soft key to dial thenumber.Speed-diallingOnce you have stored phone numbers in thePhonebook memory, you can dial them easilywhenever you want.Note: When several numbers are saved in one nameentry, the first number you entered isautomatically specified as a speed dial number.To  change the speed dial number, use Speeddial of the Phonebook options; see page xx.

You can dial the phone numbersstored in the Phonebook memory from 001 through 009simply by pressing one key. Press and hold the third digit of the memory location containing the number to be dialled.For example: Location no. 009Press the 9 key and hold.The number (and name) stored is displayed, and thendialled.Two-Touch DialMemory locations 010 through 099 are special two-touch locations.Press the second digit briefly, and then hold down thethird digit of the memory location.For example: Location no. 023Press the 2 key briefly and hold down the 3key.The number (and name) stored is displayed, and thendialled.Three-Touch DialMemory locations 100 through 250 are special three-touch locations.Press the first two digits briefly, and then hold downthe third digit of the memory location.For example: Location no. 123Press the 1key and the 2key briefly, thenhold down the 3key.The number (and name) stored is displayed, and thendialled.Four-digit DiallingYou can quickly dial a phone number in Phonebook byentering its last four consecutive digits. This feature isconvenient if you have the number memorised, but youhave forgotten where the number is stored in yourPhonebook.1. Enter the last four digits of the phone number youwant to dial.2. Press the Options soft key and select the 4-digitDial option. The phone displays the phone numbermatching the four digits.If the phone found more than one number thatcontains those four digits, it displays the firstnumber. Scroll through the number using the Left orRight key to select a number. 3. Press the  key or the Call soft key to dial it.
33CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnss32CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssPause DiallingWhen you call an automated system, like bankingservices, you are often required to enter a password oraccount number. Instead of manually entering thenumbers each time, you can store the numbers in yourPhonebook, separated by special characters which arecalled pauses.Note: Multiple two-second pauses can be enteredto extend the length of a pause. For example,two consecutive pauses cause a total pausetime of two seconds. However, keep in mindthat pauses count as digits towards the 32digit dialling maximum.Storing Pauses in a Phonebook EntryTo store a number in your Phonebook that containspauses:1. Enter the phone number you want to store, such asthe bank’s teleservice phone number.2. Press the Options soft key to access the options.3. Press the 4key for Hard Pause. The letter “P”displays, meaning that a hard pause will occur atthat point in the dialling sequence. 4. Enter the digits that need to follow the pause, suchas your account number.5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 to add more pauses andnumbers, if necessary.6. Store the number in your Phonebook as you normallywould by pressing the Save soft key and followingfrom step 2 on page xx.Pause Dialling from a Stored PhonebookEntry1. Dial the number of the service from Phonebook.2. Wait for the appropriate prompt from the systemyou are calling. 3. When prompted, press the  key to send theDTMF (Dual tone multi-frequency) number thatfollows your pause.“SENDING DTMF” flashes on the display and thetransmitted tone sounds.4. Repeat from step 2, if necessary.Manual Pause DiallingYou can enter pauses manually during the diallingprocess.1. Enter the phone number of the service you want tocall, such as a bank’s teleservice phone number.2. Press the Options soft key to access the options. 3. Press the 4key for Hard Pause. The letter “P”displays, meaning that a hard pause will occur atthat point in the dialling sequence.

Enter the number to be sent after the pause, such ascredit card number or bank account number, andthen press the  key to dial the first number. 5. To transmit the additional number after connecting,press the  key again at the prompt for thepause.“SENDING DTMF” flashes on the display and thetransmitted tone sounds.Voice DiallingBefore using the voice dialling feature, you mustrecord names and numbers in your phone using theVoice Dial menu (Menu 6-1). For further details, seepage xx.1. To place a call, press and hold the  key or openthe folder, depending on the Activate By menu(Menu 6-1-4). See page xx.2. At a voice prompt, say a name into the microphone.• If the phone recognises the name, the phone attempts a connection.• If the phone does not recognise the name, thephone sounds an alert and prompts for the nameagain .3. When the phone receives a message, an alert sounds,a text notification displays along with the name andphone number of the caller if available. The NewMessage icon ( ) remains on the screen until youread the new text messages, or you listen to the newvoice mail messages.Messages are received even when your phone is in thelock mode. However, the screen does not displayinformation about the message. To access a message,you must unlock the phone.If you receive an incoming message during aconversation, your phone automatically mutes theringer. This is to avoid ringing in your ear while you aretrying to converse.You can quickly enter the Messages menu bypressing the Up key in Standby Mode.Write Menu 2-1 You can create a short text message and send it toother mobile phones.
