The greater the number ofbars, the better the signal strength.IconsService: Appears when a call is inprogress.No Service: Appears when you are outsidea service area. When it appears, you cannotmake or receive calls. When it is not displayed,you are in analog mode.1X Mode: Appears when 1X system isacquired.Battery Strength: Shows the level of yourbattery. The more bars you see, the morepower you have left.Ringer Off: Appears when you set theringer volume for calls to Off.Silent Mode: Appears when silent mode isactivated.Auto Answer Mode: Appears when autoanswer feature is activated.AAlarm: Appears when you set an alarm toring at a specified time.Vibrator: Appears when the ringer volumefor calls set to Vib or when silent mode isactivated. Service lightBacklightThe display is illuminated by a backlight. When youpress any key or open the flip cover, the backlightilluminates. It turns off if no key is pressed within agiven period of time, depending on the Backlightoption set in the Display menu. The backlight remainson at all times when the phone is connected to anoptional car kit. To specify the length of time for which the backlight isactive, set the Backlight menu option (MENU 6-1); seepage 79 for further details.Service LightThe service light is at the top left of the phone. Itflashes to indicate an incoming call or message. It blinksin all colors for a few seconds when you turn the phoneon or off and lights to show the charging progress.Another IconsNew Message: Appears when a new textmessage is received.

Push the battery towards the top of the phone until itclicks into place.Getting StartedInstalling the BatteryYour Samsung phone comes packaged with a partiallycharged, rechargeable Lithum Ion (LiIon) battery.To Install the Battery1.  Place the battery on the back of the phone ensuringthat the tabs of the battery align with thecorresponding slots on the phone.3.  Slide the battery away.To Remove the Battery1.  If necessary, switch the phone off by holdingdown until the power-off animation is displayed.2.  Press down the catch above the battery on the backof the phone and hold it in this position.
18GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteeddGGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd19Charging the BatteryThe travel adapter allows you to charge your phone’sbattery from any 110 volt AC standard wall outlet. Alsoit allows you to make a phone call while the battery ischarging. The travel adapter will fully charge an “empty”standard battery in approximately 4 hours.1. With the battery in position in the phone, plug theconnector of the travel adapter into the jack at thebottom of the phone.2. Plug the adapter into a standard wall outlet. Thebattery will begin charging. The service light willflash and remain red while the battery strength iconanimates.3. The service light indicates the status of the batterybeing charged.• Red: the battery is charging.• Green: the battery is fully charged.• Yellow: the battery is not correctly plugged in oroperating at a too high or too low temperature.Please check the adapter and/or the battery.4. When charging is finished (the light turns green),unplug the adapter from the phone and from thepower outlet.Low Battery IndicatorYou can easily tell if your battery needs to be rechargedby checking the battery strength icon ( ) at theupper-right corner of your phone’s display. The presenceof all three bars indicates a full charge, two barsindicates a smaller charge and one bar indicates aneven smaller charge. No bars (the battery icon is empty)means your battery must be charged.When the battery charge level gets low, the batterysensor blinks an empty battery icon ( ) and sounds awarning tone. If the battery level gets too low, thephone will automatically turn off. Unfortunately, if thishappens, you’ll lose whatever you are doing, and yourphone call will cut off. Watch the battery strength iconand make sure your battery is adequately charged.➀➀➁

Hold down      until the power-on animation isdisplayed to switch the phone on.The service light on the phone flashes and an alertsounds. When the system locates services, thegreeting message displays along with the current dateand time. You can now place and receive calls.If your phone is out of service, the No Service icon() appears on the display. In this case, you cannotmake and receive calls. You can try again later whenservice is available.Note: You can change the LCD language using theLanguage menu option (MENU 6-5); for furtherdetails, refer to page 81.2. When you wish to switch the phone off, hold downuntil the power-off animation is displayed.SSEERRVVIICCEE  PPRROOVVIIDDEERR1122::1111PP  0088//0088  TThhuuYour Phone’s ModeStandby ModeStandby is the most basic state of your phone. Thephone goes into standby mode after you turn it on, orwhenever you briefly press        . When your phone is instandby mode, you will typically see the greetingmessage and current date and time. If you enter a phonenumber, you can press          to dial it or press         tosave it in the internal phonebook. Press  at any time to return to standby mode. Becareful; if you are on a call when you press  , youwill disconnect the call and return to standby mode.Press  several times or hold it down to return tostandby mode without ending the call.The Main Menu can be accessed when you are instandby mode.Talk ModeYou can place and answer calls only when your phone isturned on. During a call, the phone is in Talk mode.While you are in talk mode, pressing          gives you alist of options. See page 34 for details on the options.
2322GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteeddPower Save ModeYour phone comes with a Power Save feature that willautomatically be activated if your phone is unable tofind a signal after 10 minutes of searching. While thisfeature is active, the phone’s battery charge isconserved. The phone will automatically recheck for asignal periodically. To manually force the phone torecheck for a signal, press any key. A message on thedisplay lets you know when your phone is operating inpower save Mode.Call FunctionsMaking a CallIn standby mode, key in the area code and phonenumber and press  . When entering a number, pressing          allows you toinsert a pause or a hyphen. For more details aboutpause dialing, see page 28. Note: If you have set Auto Retry option (MENU 9-1) toOn (see page 90), the phone automatically retriesto make the call when the line is busy or theremote person does not answer you.Correcting the NumberTo clear the ... Press ....last digit displayed .whole display  for more than onesecond.Ending a CallWhen you want to finish your call, briefly press          orclose the flip cover.The call time, the length of the call, displays briefly andthe phone returns to standby mode.

To recall any of these numbers:1. If there are any characters on the display, pressto return to standby mode.2. Press   . The list of the call logs is displayed.3. Use           or           to scroll through the list until youselect the required name or number.4. Press   to dial the number.Making a Call from the PhonebookYou can store the phone numbers called regularly inmemory, which is called the phonebook. You then simplyrecall the number to dial. For further information on thephonebook feature, refer to page 55.Emergency DialingYou can place an emergency call from your emergencynumber list, even if your phone is locked or all outgoingcalls are restricted. For further information onemergency numbers, refer to page 98.Prepend DialingThe prepend option lets you add digits, such as areacodes and network feature activation codes to a phonenumber that is in your internal phonebook or call Logs. To prepend existing phone numbers in the phonebook orcall logs:1. Access a call log entry referring to page 24 or aphonebook entry referring to page xx.2. When the desired phone number displays, pressto access the option menu.3. Use           or           to scroll through the list until   Prepend option is highlighted.4. Press        .5. Enter the area code or feature code.6. Press   to dial the number.

You can dial the phone numbers storedin those memory locations simply by pressing onenumber key. Press and hold the third digit of the memory location containing the number to be dialed.For example: Location no. 009Press            and hold.The number (and name) stored is displayed, then dialed.Two-Touch DialMemory locations 010 through 099 are special two-touch locations.Press the second digit briefly, then hold down the thirddigit of the memory cell.For example: Location no. 023Press            briefly and hold down         .The number (and name) stored is displayed, then dialed.Three-Touch DialMemory locations 100 through 500 are special three-touch locations.Press the first and the second digit briefly, then holddown the third digit of the memory cell.For example: Location no. 123Press           and           briefly, then holddown          .The number (and name) stored is displayed, then dialed.Note : When several numbers are saved in onelocation, only the phone number which isspecified with the  Speed Dial label category willbe automatically dialed. For details, refer to page57.Pause DialingWhen you call automated systems, like bankingservices, you are often required to enter a password oraccount number. Instead of manually entering thenumbers each time, you can store them in yourphonebook, separated by special characters which arecalled pauses.Storing Pauses in a Phonebook EntryTo store a number in your phonebook that containspauses:1. Enter the phone number you want to store, such asthe bank’s teleservice phone number.

Press           or            to highlight the desired pausetype.• P pause: The letter “P” displays within the number,meaning that a hard pause will occur at that pointin the calling sequence.• T pause: The letter “T” displays in the number,meaning that a timed (2-second) pause will occur atthat point in the calling sequence. 4. Press         to enter a pause. Continue enteringnumbers and using          to enter pauses.5. Store the number in your phonebook as you normallywould by pressing         and following the screenprompts.Pause Dialing from a Stored Phonebook Entry1. Dial the number from the phonebook.2. If you stored the number using “T” pause, simply callthe number form the phonebook.If you stored the number using “P” pause, wait forthe appropriate prompt for the number, such as acredit card number or a bank account number. 3. When prompted, press  to send the DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) number that follows yourpause.Manual Pause DialingYou can enter pauses manually during the dialingprocess.1. Enter the phone number of the service you want toconnect to, such as a bank’s teleservice phonenumber.2. Press          to display the menu options. 3. Press           or            to highlight the desired pausetype.4. Press          to enter a pause. Continue enteringnumbers and using          to enter pauses.5. When you finish entering the numbers, press          todial the number.

For further details, see page 84.Note: The voice dialing feature does not work whenyour phone is in analog mode.1. To place a call, press and hold          .2. At a voice prompt, say the name into the microphone.• If the phone recognizes the name, the phone attempts a connection.• If the phone does not recognize the name, thescreen prompts for the name again.• If the phone is unable to recognize the name aftertwo attempts, the message “Cannot RecognizeName. Please check name” is displayed. Try thecall again later or check the recorded name. 3. The phone dials the corresponding number.Adjusting the VolumeDuring a call, if you want to adjust the voice volume,use the volume keys on the left side of the phone. Press       increase the volume level and      to decreasethe level.In standby mode, you can adjust the ring volume forvoice calls using these keys.
33CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnss32CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssAnswering a CallWhen somebody calls you, the phone rings and thephone icon is displayed in the middle of the display.If the caller can be identified, the caller’s phone number(or name if pre-stored in your phonebook) is displayed. Ifthe caller cannot be identified, only the phone iconappears.1. To answer a call, press         . Your phone is preset toanswer a call when the key is pressed via theAnswer Mode menu (MENU 9-3).If the menu is set to By any key, you can answer acall by pressing any key except for        .  When youset the menu to By flip open, you can just open theflip cover. For details about the menu, see page 91.2. End the call by pressing          or closing the flip cover.Note: You can answer a call while using the phone bookor menu features. The current operation will beinterrupted.Options During a CallYour phone provides a number of functions that you canuse during a call. As many of these options are networkservices, you may not be able to use all of them at alltimes.  Press          during a call to access the followingoptions:Mute/Quit: allows you to switch your phone’s microphone off, so that the other party cannot hear you. Example:  You wish to say something to another personin the room but do not want the other party to hear you.Calls: allows you to access the Calls menu.Phone Book: allows you to access the Phone Bookmenu.Silent/Quit: does not transmit the key tones. It allowsyou to press keys without hearing annoying key tonesduring a call.Send Tel #: Send the telephone number to the othercaller.My Phone #: shows your phone number.Version: allows you to view the software and hardwareversion of your phone. Speaker Phone: allows you to make a conversationthrough the speaker on the back side of the phone.
35CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnss34CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssSEND:Send DTMF : allows you to send the DTMF(Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) tones of the currentlydisplayed number. DTMF tones can be used to controlelectronic phone service, such as bank-by-phone orvoice mail. During a call, key in the digits you want tosend as DTMF tones, for example, the bank accountnumber and password.Using the Caller IDThis feature tells you who is calling you by displayingthe caller’s number when the phone rings. If a caller’sname and number are stored in your phonebook, thecorresponding name is also displayed. If you callsomeone who has this feature, your phone number willbe displayed on the their phone.Note: Contact your service provider to set up the Callerline identification service.Viewing Missed CallsYour phone keeps a list of calls that you do not answerwhen the phone is on and service is available. Thephone indicates a missed call by displaying a textnotification on the screen. Additionally, if callerinformation is available, the screen displays the phonenumber of the most recent missed call.Press         to call the displayed number.Quickly Switching to Silent ModeSilent mode disables all sounds on the phone. Thisfeature is best used in situations where the phone mightdisturb others, such as in a meeting, in a library or atthe theater. Your phone can be set to silent mode withone press of a key.To enter Silent mode, press and hold down          until“Entering Silent Mode” and the Vibration icon ( )appear.Pressing and holding down          once again exits silentmode. The icon is no more displayed.Call ForwardingThis feature provides the option of forwarding incomingcalls to another phone number, even while your phone isturned off. Activating Call Forwarding does not affectoutgoing calls made from this phone. Contact yourservice provider to activate Call Forwarding.
37CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnss36CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssThree-Way CallingThis feature enables you to conduct conference callswith two separate parties at the same time. The phonerecords each party into the Outgoing Calls log. Also, Youare billed airtime for each outgoing call separately. Note: Contact your service provider to activate Three-Way Calling.To place a Three-Way call:1. During a conversation, enter the phone number forthe third party, and then press         . The phoneplaces the other party on hold and dials the thirdparty.2. When you are connected to the third party, pressagain to begin your three-way call.If one of the callers (not you) hangs up, you andremaining caller stay connected. If you initiated the calland you hang up first, all three parties are disconnected.Call WaitingCall Waiting lets you receive a second call duringconversation. Your phone notifies you of a call waitingby beeping an displaying “Call Waiting.”Your phone provides the option of turning the CallWaiting feature on and off if you have subscribed to theservice. Call Waiting is on by default in the phone. If youchoose to have a undisturbed conversation, simply turnoff the feature for the current call.Note: Contact your service provider to activate the CallWaiting service.To answer a waiting call:1. To answer the call, press        . The phone connectsthe calling party and places the current party on hold.2. Press         again to switch between the two parties.Note: If you do not respond to a Call Waitingnotification, the phone will forward the call tovoicemail or another number that you have setup. You can enteralphanumeric characters into your phone using yourphone’s keypad.Your phone has the following text input modes:•T9 Word: This mode allows you to enter words withonly one key press per letter. Each key on a keypadhas more than one letter - a single press on could be J,K or L. The T9 mode automaticallycompares your key presses to an internal linguisticdatabase to determine the correct word. 60 61WWeebbWeb About the Web BrowserYour phone comes equipped with a web browser whichmakes it possible for you to access the wireless web.The web browser allows you to access up-to-the minuteinformation through your phone. Browsing the wirelessweb through your phone is unlike using your computer;site providers have selected only the critical aspects oftheir sites to present to wireless phone users and theyhave removed most of the graphics.  Each time you start the web browser, the phone willconnect to the wireless web and the Service icon ( )will appear on the display. Any time the icon is visibleon the display, you are connected to the wireless weband will be billed accordingly. Rates will vary accordingto your service plan.  The web browser will end the connection after a certainperiod of network inactivity and will automaticallyreconnect as necessary. For this reason, you may findthat you are billed for several network connectionswithin a single session. This is normal and is designedto minimize your bill.You can quickly launch the web browser by pressing andholding down           in standby mode.Get In Web MENU 3-1Note: The first time you use the web browser, you willgo through a security setup process that takes 3to 5 minutes. Please follow the on-screenprompts to complete the security setup process.This initial setup process occurs only the firsttime you access the service.1. Thesetwo keys are called “soft keys” because their functionchanges depending on where you are in the webbrowser software.Navigating the Web BrowserWhen you use the web browser, some keys on yourphone operate differently than when on a normal phonecall. These keys are explained below. The web browserpresents on-screen items in one of the following ways:• text or numeric input• links (embedded in content)• numbered options (some options may not benumbered)• simple textYou can act on the options or links by making use of thesoft keys. The soft keys are located below the bottomline of the display.Here’s how the keys work in the web browser:Navigation Keys:Use the navigation keysto scroll up or down to select browseroptions.
