4Section 1: Getting StartedThis section allows you to quickly start using your Samsung SCH-R860U phone by installing the SIM and microSD cards, installing and charging the battery, activating your service, and setting up your voicemail account. Understanding this User ManualThe sections of this manual generally follow the features of your phone. A robust index for features begins on page 189. Also included is important safety information that you should know before using your phone. Most of this information is near the back of the guide, beginning on page 152. This manual gives navigation instructions according to the default display settings. If you select other settings, navigation steps may be different. Unless otherwise specified, all instructions in this manual assume that you are starting from the Home screen. To get to the Home screen, you may need to unlock the phone or keypad. (For more information, refer to “Securing Your Phone” on page 15.) 6Setting Up Your PhoneBefore using your phone, you need to install the SIM card, the microSD™ card, and the battery into their respective internal slots and compartment. Important!Before removing or replacing the battery cover, make sure the phone is switched off. To turn the phone off, hold down the power key until the power-off image displays, then touch Power off.Removing the battery cover1. Locate the cover removal opening (1). 2. Place your fingernail in the opening and pry the cover away from the device (2). Caution! Do not bend or twist the back cover excessively. Doing so may damage the cover. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Getting Started 7Installing the battery cover Align the cover (1) and press it firmly into place (2), making sure it snaps into place at the corners. Installing the SIM CardWhen you subscribe to a 4G LTE cellular network, you are provided with a plug-in SIM card loaded with your subscription details, such as your PIN, available optional services, and many others features. This SIM card will only work with this device. Important!The SIM card must be installed for your phone to establish a network connection. The plug-in SIM card information and its contacts can be easily damaged by scratching or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card. Keep all SIM cards out of reach of small children. 1. Remove the battery cover. (See “Removing the battery cover” on page 6.) 2. If the battery is installed, remove it. (See “Removing the Battery” on page 10.) 3. Locate the SIM card slot on the top right hand corner of the battery compartment. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
84. Make sure the gold contacts of the SIM card face downward and that the notched corner of the card faces outward to the right (as shown). 5. Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket (as shown) until touches the stop. Note:If the SIM card is not inserted correctly, the phone cannot make a network connection. Once the SIM card is inserted, do not remove it. 6. Replace the battery and battery cover. (See “Installing the Battery” on page 10.) If your SIM card is ever separated from the device or damaged, your device will not function. If you experience any issues with your device, contact Customer Service at 888-944-9400 or visit your nearest U.S. Cellular® retail location. SIM Card Limited WarrantySubject to the exclusions contained below, United States Cellular Corporation (“U.S. Cellular”) warrants to the original purchaser (“You” or “Your”) of the handset with which the SIM card was provided that the SIM card will be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date You purchased the handset (the “Warranty Period”). This warranty is not transferable. Should a defect appear during the Warranty Period, U.S. Cellular will send a replacement SIM card to Your address within the United States without charge provided that you request the replacement SIM card during or within thirty (30) days following the Warranty Period by calling U.S. Cellular Customer Service at 888-944-9400 (or dialing 611 on Your U.S. Cellular handset) or by visiting a U.S. Cellular retail store. A fully discharged battery requires up to 4 hours of charge time.After the first charge, you can use the phone while charging. Warning!Use only Samsung-approved charging devices and batteries. Two to three minutes before the battery becomes too low to operate your phone, the empty battery icon will flash and a tone will sound. If you continue to operate the phone without charging the battery, the phone will power off. Installing the Battery1. Remove the battery cover. (See “Removing the battery cover” on page 6.) 2. Slide the battery into the compartment (1) so that the tabs on the end align with the slots at the bottom of the phone, making sure the connectors align.3. Getting Started 11Charging the BatteryYour phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery. A wall charger, which is used for charging the battery, is included with your phone. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.Before using your phone for the first time, you must fully charge the battery. A discharged battery recharges fully in approximately 4 hours.Note:Verify that the battery is installed prior to connecting the wall charger. If both the wall charger is connected and the battery is not installed, the handset will power cycle continuously and prevent proper operation. Failure to unplug the wall charger before you remove the battery, can cause the phone to become damaged.Important!It is recommended you fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time.1. 42Switching Between CallsWhen you have an active call and a call on hold, you may switch between the two calls, changing the one on hold to active and placing the other on hold.1. Your People List 47Creating a New GroupThe Group function makes it possible to make individually named groups of people you care about, such as family, friends, coworkers, or social media friends. Once you create a group, you can pin it to your home screen and it becomes a live tile. Notifications appear as new posts, comments, or pictures are added to this group.Use the following procedure to create a new group of your contacts.1. From the Home screen, touch People.2. 50Linking PeopleLinking People InformationMany people now maintain multiple email accounts, social networking logins, and other similar account information. For example, a Facebook account login name might differ from a corporate email account login because they are maintained separately and for different groups of people.This device can synchronize with multiple accounts such as Windows Live, Outlook, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. When you synchronize your phone with these accounts, each account creates a separate contact entry in the People list.If one of your contacts (Amy Smith, for example) has a regular email account that you maintain in Hotmail, but also has a Facebook account under her maiden and married name, as well as a Google account, when you merge these accounts into your Contacts list you can link all of her entries and view the information in one record.The next time you synchronize your phone with your accounts, any updates that contacts make to email account names, email addresses, etc. automatically update in your People list.For more information about synchronizing accounts, see “Synchronizing Accounts” on page 51.1. From the Home screen, touch People.2. Touch a contact name (the name you want to link to another entry). Typically, this is the same contact with a different name or account information.3. Touch .4. The contacts and information displays with a label next to the contact name to indicate what type of account information is contained in the entry.Unlinking People1. Types of MessagesYour phone provides the following message types: • Text Messages • Multimedia (Picture) Messages • Email Messages • Online Messages The Short Message Service (SMS) lets you send and receive text messages to and from other mobile phones or email addresses. To use this feature, you may need to subscribe to your service provider’s message service. Important!When creating a message, adding an image to a text message changes the message from a text message to a multimedia message. When messages are received, the number of messages displays in the Messaging tile on the Home screen. Creating and Sending Text MessagesTo create a new message and send it to another mobile phone or an email address:1. From the Home screen, touch Messaging.2. Touch new.3. Touch the To field to manually enter a recipient. 70Linked InboxesEach time you add a new email account, a tile is added to the Home screen with the email name and to the Apps list.When you add more than one email account, it is possible to link two or more email accounts so you can see all messages from those accounts in one inbox. They also emit RF at substantially reduced time intervals when in the stand-by mode. Health and Safety Information 153The biological effects of radio frequency energy should not be confused with the effects from other types of electromagnetic energy.Very high levels of electromagnetic energy, such as is found in X-rays and gamma rays, can ionize biological tissues. Ionization is a process where electrons are stripped away from their normal locations in atoms and molecules. It can permanently damage biological tissues including DNA, the genetic material.The energy levels associated with radio frequency energy, including both radio waves and microwaves, are not great enough to cause ionization of atoms and molecules. Therefore, RF energy is a type of non-ionizing radiation. Other types of non-ionizing radiation include visible light, infrared radiation (heat), and other forms of electromagnetic radiation with relatively low frequencies.While RF energy does not ionize particles, large amounts can increase body temperatures and cause tissue damage. Two areas of the body, the eyes and the testes, are particularly vulnerable to RF heating because there is relatively little blood flow in them to carry away excess heat.Research Results to Date: Is there a connection between RF and certain health problems?The results of most studies conducted to date say no. In addition, attempts to replicate and confirm the few studies that have shown a connection have failed.The scientific community at large therefore believes that the weight of scientific evidence does not show an association between exposure to Radio Frequency (RF) from cell phones and adverse health outcomes. Still the scientific community has supported additional research to address gaps in knowledge. Some of these studies are described below.Interphone StudyInterphone is a large international study designed to determine whether cell phones increase the risk of head and neck cancer. A report published in the International Journal of Epidemiology (June, 2010) compared cell phone usage for more than 5,000 people with brain tumors (glioma and meningioma) and a similar number of healthy controls.Results of this study did NOT show that cell phones caused brain cancer. In this study, most people had no increased risk of brain cancer from using cell phones. Combinations of these can be used to reduce RF energy absorption from cell phones.Headsets can substantially reduce exposure because the phone is held away from the head in the user's hand or in approved body-worn accessories. 156Because there are no known risks from exposure to RF emissions from cell phones, there is no reason to believe that hands-free kits reduce risks. Hands-free kits can be used for convenience and comfort. They are also required by law in many states if you want to use your phone while driving.Cell Phone Accessories that Claim to Shield the Head from RF RadiationBecause there are no known risks from exposure to RF emissions from cell phones, there is no reason to believe that accessories which claim to shield the head from those emissions reduce risks. Some products that claim to shield the user from RF absorption use special phone cases, while others involve nothing more than a metallic accessory attached to the phone. Studies have shown that these products generally do not work as advertised. Unlike “hands-free” kits, these so-called “shields” may interfere with proper operation of the phone. The phone may be forced to boost its power to compensate, leading to an increase in RF absorption.Children and Cell PhonesThe scientific evidence does not show a danger to any users of cell phones from RF exposure, including children and teenagers. This arbitration provision is entered pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act.
