Those guidelines are consistent with the safetystandards previously set by both U.S. and international standardsbodies. The design of this phone complies with the FCC guidelinesand these international standards. Use only the supplied antenna or one that is approved.Unauthorized antennas, modifications, or attachments could impaircall quality, damage the phone, or result in a violation of FCCregulations.Do not use the phone with a damaged antenna. If a damagedantenna comes into contact with the skin, a minor burn may result.Please contact your local dealer for a replacement antenna.Body-worn OperationThis device was tested for typical body-worn operations with the back        of the phone kept 1.5 cm. from the body. New Message: Indicates that there is anew message waiting to be checked.Alarm Mode: Appears when you set analarm to ring at a specified time.Battery Status: Shows the level of yourbattery. The more bars you see, the morepower you have left.BacklightThe backlight illuminates the display and keypad.When you press any key or open the folder, thebacklight illuminates. It turns off if no key is pressedwithin a given period of time, depending on theBacklight option (Menu 6-2-2) set in the Displaymenu.To specify the length of time the phone waits beforethe backlight turns off, set the Backlight menuoption (Menu 6-2-2); see page 109 for furtherdetails.Service Light The service light on the folder flashes to indicate anincoming call, message or alarm and flashes for afew seconds when you turn the phone on or off. 17GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd16Getting StartedUsing a UIM CardThe UIM(User Identification Module) card contains achip with all the information required to operate yourphone. Note the following:• Keep all miniature UIM cards out of the reach ofsmall children.• The UIM card and its contacts can easily bedamaged by scratching or bending, so be carefulwhen handling, inserting or removing the card.Installing the UIM card1. If necessary, remove the battery by referring topage 18.2. Slide the UIM card into the slot ensuring that thenotched corner is at the top left and the goldcontacts of the card face into the phone.Removing the UIM CardSlide the UIM card out of the slot.Note:Despite of no UIM card in the phone, you canmake emergency call.Using a BatteryYour phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ionbattery. Use only approved batteries and chargers.Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.Note: You must fully charge the battery before usingyour phone for the first time. A dischargedbattery is fully recharged in approximately155 minutes for a standard battery. Installing the Battery1. Insert the teeth at the bottom of the battery intothe corresponding slots.

If necessary, switch off the phone by pressing andholding the  key down until the power-offanimation is displayed.2.  To remove the battery, push and hold the catchabove the battery on the back of the phone andlift the battery away.Charging the Battery A travel adapter and a battery charger are providedfor charging your batteries.Using the Travel AdapterThe travel adapter allows you to use the phone whilethe battery is charging, but this will cause thebattery to charge more slowly.1. With the battery in position on the phone, plug theconnector of the travel adapter into the jack at thebottom of the phone. Make sure that the arrow on the connector isfacing toward the front of the phone.2. Plug the adapter into a standard AC wall outlet.The battery strength icon on the display showsthat the battery is charging.2. Push the battery against the back of the phoneuntil it clicks into place. Make sure that the battery is properly installedbefore switching the phone on .
21GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteeddSwitching the Phone On or Off1. Open the folder.2. Press and hold        for more than one second toswitch the phone on.3. If the phone asks for a Personal IdentificationNumber (PIN), enter the PIN code supplied withthe UIM card. For further details on the PIN code,see page 22.The service light flashes and an alert sounds.When the system locates services, you can seethe idle screens on the display.If the phone is out of the service area, the NoService icon ( )  appears on the display. In thiscase, you cannot place and receive calls. You cantry again later when service is available. Note: You can change the display language via theLanguage menu option (Menu 6-2-3). Seepage 109.4.  When you wish to switch the phone off, pressand hold        for more than one seconds until thepower-off animation is displayed.20GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd3. When charging is finished, unplug the adapterfrom both the power outlet and the phone bypressing the grey tabs on both sides of theconnector and pulling the connector out.Note: Do not remove the battery from the phonewithout unplugging the adapter while it ischarging. If you do this, the phone may bedamaged.

These functions arearranged in menus and submenus, accessed usingthe two soft keys marked       and      . Each menuand submenu allows you to view and alter thesettings of a particular function.The roles of the soft keys vary according to thecurrent context; the label on the bottom line of thedisplay just above each key indicates its current role.Example:Menu                       Find09/05 Fri  11:18Press the left soft keyto access Main MenuMode.Press the right soft keyto access PhonebookFind.WARNING!Do not switch on the phone when mobile phone useis prohibited or when it may cause interference ordanger.Note: Do not touch the antenna on the phoneunnecessarily when the phone is switched on.Contact with the antenna affects the callquality and may cause the phone to operateat a higher power level than otherwiseneeded.PIN CodeThe PIN code supplied with the UIM card helps youprotect the UIM card against unauthorized use.When the phone asks you to enter the code, enterthe appropriate code (displayed as asterisks forsecurity). If you enter an incorrect PIN code threetimes in succession, your UIM card is blocked. Tounblock the card, contact your service provider.You can enable or disable the code using the CardSetup menu option (Menu 6-7-8). For furtherinformation on the PIN code, see page 118.
25GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteedd24GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteeddPower Save ModeYour phone comes with a Power Save feature thatwill automatically be activated if your phone isunable to find a signal after 15 minutes of searching.While this feature is active, the phone’s batterycharge is conserved. To return to the standby mode,press any key.Lock ModeWhen you lock your phone using the Lock Modemenu option (Menu 6-7-1), you can receivemessages and calls, but you cannot place a call untilyou unlock the phone. To unlock the phone, press the Unlock soft key andenter the lock code. For further details about locking and unlocking thephone, see page 114.Your Phone’s ModesStandby ModeStandby mode is the most basic state of your phone.The phone goes into the standby mode soon after youturn it on, or whenever you briefly press       . Whenyour phone is in the standby mode, you will typicallysee the current date and time. If you enter a phonenumber, you can press        to dial it, or press the Savesoft key to save it in the internal phonebook. Press  at any time to return to the standby mode.Be careful; if you are on a call when you press      ,your phone disconnects the call and returns to thestandby mode. Press  several times or hold it toreturn to the standby mode without ending the call.Talk ModeYou can place and answer calls only when your phoneis turned on. During a call, the phone is in the talkmode. While you are in the talk mode, pressing theMenu soft key gives you a list of options. See page 38for details on the options.
2726GGeettttiinngg  SSttaarrtteeddSilent Mode The silent mode disables all sounds on the phone.This feature is best used in situations where thephone might disturb others, such as in a meeting, ata library and in a theater. To enter the silent mode, press and hold         until“Entering Silent Mode” and the Vibration icon ( )appears.To exit the silent mode and reactive th previoussound settings, press and hold         until “Exit SilentMode”appears. The vibration icon is no longerdisplayed.Note: When you turn the phone off, the silent modeis automatically deactivated.Call FunctionsMaking a CallTo make a call:1. In the standby mode, enter the area code andphone number.While entering a phone number, press the Pausesoft key to insert a hard pause. For moreinformation on pause dialing, see page 33.2. Press       . The phone places the call to theentered phone number.Note: If you have set the time interval for automaticredialing in the Auto Retry menu option (Menu6-3), the phone automatically retries to makethe call when no one answers or the line isbusy. See page 111 for further details.Correcting the NumberTo clear Pressthe last digit .displayedthe whole display and hold  for more thanone second.

The last call issaved in the first position. To recall any of these numbers:.1. If there are any characters on the display, return tothe standby mode by pressing       .2. Press       . The list of recent calls displays.•       : Outgoing calls•      : Incoming calls•      : Missed calls3. Press        or        , or the volume keys on the leftside of the phone to scan through the list until youfind the required number.4. Press        to dial the displayed number.Ending a CallWhen you want to finish your call, press       . The call time, or the length of the call, displays alongwith the phone number of the called person. If thenumber is stored in your phonebook, the namedisplays. If there is no match, you can press theSave soft key and store the number in thephonebook. For further details about storing thenumber in the phonebook, see page 71.Or, simply close the folder to end a call.Emergency DialingYou can place calls to standard emergency numbers,such as 119, or three specified number in theEmergency Number list, even if your phone is lockedor all outgoing calls are restricted. For further detailson emergency numbers, refer to page 115.You can place an SOS call to a preset emergencynumber when switching the phone on without a UIMcard.
31EEnntteerriinngg  TTeexxtt30EEnntteerriinngg  TTeexxttSpeed DialingOnce you have stored phone numbers in thephonebook, you can dial them easily with the fewpresses of the keys.From the UIM Card MemoryYou can dial the phone numbers stored in the UIMcard memory. The capacity of the card memory mayvary depending on the card.Enter the memory location of the desired number andpress and hold the final digit to dial.One-Touch Dial: Memory locations 001 through 009are special one-touch locations. You can dial thephone numbers stored in the Phonebook memoryfrom 001 through 009 simply by pressing one key. Press and hold the third digit of the memory location containing the number to be dialed.For example: Location no. 009Press and hold.The number (and name) stored is displayed, thendialed.Making a Call from the PhonebookYou can store the phone numbers called regularly inthe UIM card and phone memory, which is called“Phonebook.” You then simply recall the number todial. For further details on the phonebook, refer topage 68.Prepend DialingThe Prepend option lets you add digits, such as areacodes and network feature activation codes, to aphone number that is in your call logs before dialingit.To prepend the phone numbers stored in the calllogs:1. Access a call log in the Recent Calls list or in theCalls menu (Menu 1) referring to page 62 .2. When the phone number you want to dial displays,press the Menu soft key to access the Menu pop-up list.3. Press          to select the Prepend option.4. Enter the area code or feature code.5. Press        to dial the number.

Instead of manually entering thenumbers each time, you can store the numbers inyour Phonebook, separated by special characters,which are called pauses.Storing Pauses in a Phonebook EntryTo store a number in your Phonebook that containspauses:1. Enter the phone number you want to store, such asthe bank’s teleservice phone number.2. Press the Pause soft key to insert a pause. A “P”displays, meaning that a hard pause will occur atthat point in the dialing sequence.The “P”stops the dialing and waits for theteleservice to prompt you for a number. Thenumber following the “P” is your account number,PIN, etc.3. Enter the digits that need to follow the pause,such as your account number.4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to add more pauses andnumbers, if necessary.5. Store the number in your Phonebook as younormally would by pressing the Save soft keyand following from Step 3 on page 75.Two-Touch Dial: For memory locations of twodigits.Press the second digit briefly, then hold down thethird digit of the memory cell.For example: Location no. 023Press  briefly and hold down         .The number (and name) stored is displayed, thendialed.Three-Touch Dial:  For memory locations of twodigits.Press the first and the second digit briefly, then holddown the third digit of the memory cell.For example: Location no. 123Press          and           briefly, then holddown         .The number (and name) stored is displayed, thendialed.From the Phone’s MemoryPress the digits of the phone memory locationcontaining the number to be dialed, then press andhold         . Press      to increase the volume level and      todecrease the level. The graphic on the display showsall five levels; the more bars you see, the higher thelevel. Pause Dialing from a Stored Phonebook Entry1. Call the number from the Phonebook.2. Wait for the appropriate prompt from the numberyou are calling. 3. When prompted, press    to send the DTMF(Dual Tone Multi Frequency) number that followsyour pause.“SENDING DTMF” flashes on the display and thetransmitted tone sounds.Manual Pause DialingYou can enter pauses manually during the dialingprocess.1. Enter the phone number of the service you want tocall, such as a bank’s teleservice phone number.2. Press the Pause soft key to insert a pause.The screen displays a “P” indicating a pause. 3. Enter the number to be sent after the pause bypressing the digit keys, and then press        .4. After connecting, wait for the prompt fromteleservice. Press        again after the prompt tosend the additional number.
37CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnss36CCaallll  FFuunnccttiioonnssRejecting a CallTo reject an incoming call, press the right soft keyor        .Press and hold one of the volume keys on the leftside of the phone with the folder closed.Viewing Missed CallsIf you fail to answer a call for any reason, the phoneindicates a missed call by displaying a textnotification on the screen. Additionally, if callerinformation is available, a Missed entry is created,and the screen displays the phone number of the lastmissed call.When the display informs you of the missed call,press        to call the displayed number, or        toclear the message and return to the standby mode.To view the list of the missed calls, refer to “Missed”on page 62.Answering a CallWhen somebody calls you, the phone alerts you byringing and blinking the service light.If the caller can be identified, the caller’s phonenumber, or name if stored in your Phonebook,displays.
