131130Health and Safety InformationExposure to Radio Frequency (RF) SignalsYour mobile phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured, so as to exceed the limits for exposure to radio-frequency (RF) energy, as recommended by the Federal Communications Commission of the U.S. Government. These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on the safety standards previously set by both U.S. and international standards bodies:• American National Standards Institute (ANSI) IEEE. C95.1-1992• National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement (NCRP). Report 86. 1986• International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) 1996• Ministry of Health (Canada), Safety Code 6.The standards include a substantial safety margind designed to assure the safety of all persons, regardless of age and health. The exposure standard for mobile phones employs a unit of measurement known as the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate). The SAR limit recommended by the FCC is 1.6W/kg.** In the U.S. and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile phones used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg) averaged over one gram of tissue. The standard incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any variations in measurements.
Health and Safety Information132SAR tests are conducted using standard operating positions specified by the FCC with the phone transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the phone while operation can be well below the maximum value. This is because the phone is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to a base station, the lower the power output of the phone. Before a new phone model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified to the FCC that it does not exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirement for safe exposure. The tests are performed in positions and locations (e.g., at the ear and worn on the body) as required by the FCC for each model. (Body-worn measurements may differ among phone models, depending upon available accessories and FCC requirements). While there may be differences between the SAR levels of various phones and at various positions, they all meet the government requirement for safe exposure. For body worn operation, to maintain compliance with FCC RF exposure guidelines, use only Samsung- approved accessories. When carrying the phone while it is on, use the specific Samsung-supplied or approved carrying case, holster, or other body-worn accessory.Use of non-Samsung-approved accessories may violate FCC RF exposure guidelines and should be avoided.Health and Safety Information133For additional information concerning exposure to radio frequency signals, see the following websites:Federal Communications Commission (FCC) RF Safety program (select “Information on Human Exposure to RF Fields from Cellular and PCS Radio Transmitters”): http://www.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafetyCellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA): http://www.wow-com.comWorld Health Organization (WHO) International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (select Qs & As): http://www.who.int/emfUnited Kingdom, National Radiological Protection Board: http://www.nrpb.org.ukU.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health:http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/consumer/120FCC Compliance lnformationThis device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules.Operation and is subject to the condition that thisdevice does not cause harmful interference.
135Precautions When Using BatteriesYour phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ionstandard battery. • Never use any charger or battery that isdamaged in any way.• Use the battery only for its intended purpose.• If you use the phone near the network’s basestation, it uses less power; talk and standbytime are greatly affected by the signal strengthon the cellular network and the parameters setby the network operator.• Battery charging time depends on theremaining battery charge and the type ofbattery and charger used. The battery can becharged and discharged hundreds of times, butit will gradually wear out. When the operationtime including talk time and standby time isnoticeably shorter than normal, it is time tobuy a new battery.• If left unused, a fully charged battery willdischarge itself over time.• Use only Samsung-approved batteries andrecharge your battery only with Samsung-approved chargers. When a charger is not inuse, disconnect it from the power source. Donot leave the battery connected to a chargerfor more than a week, since overcharging mayshorten its life.134Health and Safety Information• Extreme temperatures will affect the chargingcapacity of your battery; it may require coolingor warming first.• Do not leave the battery in hot or cold places, such as in a car in summer or winterconditions, as you will reduce the capacity andlife-time of the battery. Always try to keep thebattery at room temperature. A phone with ahot or cold battery may temporarily not work, even when the battery is fully charged. Li-ionbatteries are particularly affected bytemperatures below 0 °C (32 °F).• Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidentalshort circuiting can occur when a metallicobject (coin, clip or pen) causes a directconnection between the + and - terminals ofthe battery (metal strips on the back of thebattery), for example when you carry a sparebattery in a pocket or bag. Short-circuiting theterminals may damage the battery or theobject causing the short-circuit.• Dispose of used batteries in accordance withlocal regulations. Always recycle. Do notdispose of batteries in a fire.135
