Maintaining Water and Dust Resistance This device is rated IP68 using the Ingress Protection rating system. Your device has been tested in a controlled environment and shown to DRAFT be water and dust resistant in certain FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY circumstances (meets requirements of classification IP68 as described by the international standard IEC 60529 Degrees of Protection provided by Enclosures [IP Code]; test conditions: 15-35°C, 86-106 kPa, 5.0 feet, for 30 minutes). Despite this Health and Safety 11 classification, your device is not impervious to water damage in any situation. It is important that all compartments are closed tightly. Note: If any liquid is found to have entered your device components or an internally sealed system, this condition will void your device warranty. DRAFT FOR USE ONLY FollowINTERNAL these tips carefully to prevent damage to the device. • Any device which uses accessible compartments or ports that can be opened, should have these sealed or closed tightly to prevent liquid from entering the system. 12 • Whenever your device gets wet, dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. If your device has gotten wet, you should dry the inside of the charging port before inserting a power connector to charge your device. If the charging port is not fully dry, your device may operate abnormally. For example, it may charge more slowly or overheat. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY Health and Safety 13 • Do not expose the device to salt water or ionized water, or to water over 5.0 feet deep for more than 30 minutes. If your device is exposed to fresh water, dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. If the device is exposed to any liquid other than fresh water, rinse the device with fresh water immediately and dry it DRAFT thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. Failure to rinse the device in fresh FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY water and dry it as instructed may cause the device to suffer from operability or cosmetic issues. • Do not expose the device to water at high pressure. 14 • If the device is dropped or receives an impact, the water and dust resistant features of the device may be damaged. • To maintain the water-resistant and dust-resistant features of your device, if an S Pen is available for use, verify it is securely inserted prior to any exposure to liquids. • The touchscreen and other features DRAFT may INTERNAL not work properlyUSE if the device is FOR ONLY used in water or in other liquids. [110116] Health and Safety 15 Exposure to Radio Frequency (RF) Signals The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published information for consumers relating to Radio Frequency (RF) exposure from wireless phones. The FDA publication includes the following information: Do cell phones pose a health DRAFT hazard? FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY Many people are concerned that cell phone radiation will cause cancer or other serious health hazards. The weight of scientific evidence has not linked cell phones with any health problems. 16 Cell phones emit low levels of Radio Frequency (RF) energy. Over the past 15 years, scientists have conducted hundreds of studies looking at the biological effects of the radio frequency energy emitted by cell phones. While some researchers have reported biological changes associated with RF energy, these studies have DRAFT failed to be replicated. The majority of studiesINTERNAL published haveUSE failed to show FOR ONLY an association between exposure to radio frequency from a cell phone and health problems. While in use, the low levels of RF energy a cell phones emits are in the microwave frequency range. Exposure Health and Safety 17 to low level RF that does not produce heating effects causes no known adverse health effects. Note: While in stand-by mode, they also emit RF at substantially reduced time intervals. While in use, high levels of RF energy can produce health effects (by heating DRAFT tissue). FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY The biological effects of radio frequency energy should not be confused with the effects from other types of electromagnetic energy. Very high levels of electromagnetic energy, such as is found in X-rays and gamma rays, can ionize biological 18 tissues. Ionization is a process where electrons are stripped away from their normal locations in atoms and molecules. It can permanently damage biological tissues including DNA, the genetic material. The energy levels associated with radio frequency energy, including both radio waves and microwaves, are not DRAFT great enough to cause ionization of FOR USE ONLY atoms INTERNAL and molecules. Therefore, RF energy is a type of non-ionizing radiation. Other types of non-ionizing radiation include visible light, infrared radiation (heat), and other forms of electromagnetic radiation with relatively low frequencies. Health and Safety 19 While RF energy does not ionize particles, large amounts can increase body temperatures and cause tissue damage. Two areas of the body, the eyes and the testes, are particularly vulnerable to RF heating because there is relatively little blood flow in them to carry away excess heat. For more up-to-date information on DRAFT this question, please visit: FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY www.fda.gov/RadiationEmittingProducts/ RadiationEmittingProductsandProced ures/ HomeBusinessandEntertainment/ CellPhones/ucm116282.htm 20 Research Results to Date: Is there a connection between RF and certain health problems? The results of most studies conducted to date say no. In addition, attempts to replicate and confirm the few studies that have shown a connection have failed. The scientific community at large DRAFT therefore believes that the weight of FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY scientific evidence does not show an association between exposure to Radio Frequency (RF) from cell phones and adverse health outcomes. Still, the scientific community has supported Health and Safety 21 additional research to address gaps in knowledge. Some of these studies are described below. For more up-to-date information on this question, please visit: www.fda.gov/RadiationEmittingProducts/ RadiationEmittingProductsandProced ures/ DRAFT HomeBusinessandEntertainment/ FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY CellPhones/ucm116335.htm Interphone Study Interphone is a large international study designed to determine whether cell phones increase the risk of head and neck cancer. A report published in the International Journal of 22 Epidemiology (June, 2010) compared cell phone usage for more than 5,000 people with brain tumors (glioma and meningioma) and a similar number of healthy controls. Results of this study did NOT show that cell phones caused brain cancer. In this study, most people had no increased risk of brain cancer from DRAFT using cell phones. For people with the FOR INTERNAL USE heaviest use of cell phones (anONLY average of more than ½ hour per day, every day, for over 10 years) the study suggested a slight increase in brain cancer. However, the authors determined that biases and errors prevented any conclusions being drawn from this data. Additional Health and Safety 23 information about Interphone can be found at: www.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/pr/ 2010/pdfs/pr200_E.pdf Interphone is the largest cell phone study to date, but it did not answer all questions about cell phone safety. Additional research is being conducted around the world, and the FDA DRAFT continues to monitor developments in FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY this field. It is best to follow the recommendations below to reduce your exposure to this type of energy during use. 26 Steps to Reduce Exposure to Radio Frequency Energy If there is a risk from being exposed to radio frequency energy (RF) from cell phones - and at this point we do not know that there is - it is probably very small. But, if you are concerned about avoiding even potential risks, you can take a few simple steps to minimize DRAFT your RF exposure: FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY • Reduce the amount of time spent using your cell phone; • Use speaker mode or a headset to place more distance between your head and the cell phone. Health and Safety 27 Hands-Free Kits Hands-free kits may include audio or Bluetooth® headsets and various types of body-worn accessories such as belt-clips and holsters. Combinations of these can be used to reduce RF energy absorption from cell phones. Headsets can substantially reduce DRAFT exposure because the phone is held FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY away from the head in the user's hand or in approved body-worn accessories. Cell phones that are marketed in the U.S. are required to comply with RF exposure requirements when used against the head and against the body. 28 Since there are no known risks from exposure to RF emissions from cell phones, there is currently no reason to conclude that hands-free kits reduce RF emission risks. Although handsfree kits can be used for convenience and comfort, they are also a legally required item in many states if you want to use your phone while driving. DRAFT FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY Health and Safety 29 Cell Phone Accessories that Claim to Shield the Head from RF Radiation Note: Accessories that have potential to influence the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) characteristics of a mobile device require FCC approval. Such accessory products should be approved for your device DRAFT prior to use as they can modify radio frequency fields FOR the INTERNAL USE ONLY around the device. For more information, please refer to “General RF Exposure Guidance v06” at: https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/kdb/ 30 forms/ FTSSearchResultPage.cfm?switch=P&i d=20676 Because there are no known risks from exposure to RF emissions from cell phones, there is currently no reason to conclude that accessories which claim to shield the head from those emissions reduce risks. Some products DRAFT that claim to shield the user from RF FOR INTERNAL USE cases, ONLY absorption use special phone while others involve nothing more than a metallic accessory attached to the phone. Studies have shown that these products generally do not work as advertised. Unlike “hands-free” kits, Health and Safety 31 these so-called “shields” may interfere with proper operation of the phone. The phone may be forced to boost its power and RF emissions to compensate, leading to an increase in RF absorption. Children and Cell Phones The scientific evidence does not show a danger to any users of cell phones DRAFT from RF exposure, including children FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY and teenagers. The steps adults can take to reduce RF exposure apply to children and teenagers as well. • Reduce the amount of time spent on the cell phone; 32 • Use speaker mode or a headset to place more distance between the head and the cell phone. For additional information about children and cell phones, please visit: www.fda.gov/RadiationEmittingProducts/ RadiationEmittingProductsandProced ures/ DRAFT HomeBusinessandEntertainment/ FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY CellPhones/ucm116331.htm Some groups sponsored by other national governments have advised that children be discouraged from using cell phones at all. For example, The Stewart Report from the United Kingdom made such a Health and Safety 33 recommendation in December 2000. In this report, a group of independent experts noted that no evidence exists that using a cell phone causes brain tumors or other ill effects. Their recommendation to limit cell phone use by children was strictly precautionary; it was not based on scientific evidence that any health DRAFT hazard exists. It is designed and manufactured not to exceed the exposure limits for Radio Frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of DRAFT the U.S. Government. USE ONLY FOR INTERNAL These FCC RF exposure limits are derived from the recommendations of two expert organizations: the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement (NCRP) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In both cases, the Health and Safety 37 recommendations were developed by scientific and engineering experts drawn from industry, government, and academia after extensive reviews of the scientific literature related to the biological effects of RF energy. The RF exposure limit set by the FCC for wireless mobile devices employs a unit of measurement known as the DRAFT Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The FOR SAR is INTERNAL a measure of theUSE rate ofONLY absorption of RF energy by the human body expressed in units of watts per kilogram (W/kg). SAR values for wrist worn devices are measured in reference to (wrist) extremity and head under simultaneous (multiple) transmitter conditions for each 38 frequency band operation. For speaker mode communication this device has been tested when worn on the wrist and positioned a minimum of 1.0 cm from the head. For this device, the FCC safety limit for extremity SAR is 4.0 W/ kg (10g) and head SAR is 1.6 W/kg (1g). This device has extremity and head SAR levels that do not exceed FCC SAR DRAFT safety limits. The FCC SAR limit FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additional protection to the public and to account for any variations in measurements. SAR tests are conducted using standard operating positions accepted by the FCC with the device Health and Safety 39 transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the phone while operating can be well below the maximum reported value. This is because the device is designed to operate at multiple power levels so DRAFT as to use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY closer you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output of the device. Before a new model device is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified to the FCC that it does not exceed the SAR limit established 40 by the FCC. Tests for each model are performed in positions and locations (e.g., at the ear and worn on the body) as required by the FCC. Use of other accessories may not ensure compliance with FCC RF exposure guidelines. The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this mobile device with all reported DRAFT SAR levels evaluated as in compliance FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY with the FCC RF exposure guidelines. This device has an FCC ID number: A3LSMR765V [Model Number: SM-R765V] and the specific SAR levels for this device can be found at the following FCC website: www.fcc.gov/oet/ea/. Health and Safety 41 The SAR information for this device can also be found on Samsung’s website: www.samsung.com/sar SAR information on this and other model devices can be accessed online on the FCC's website through: http://transition.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety/ sar.html. To find information that pertains to a particular model mobile DRAFT device on this site, use the mobile FOR INTERNAL device’s FCC ID number,USE whichONLY is usually printed somewhere on the mobile device. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove the battery pack to find the number. 42 Once you have the FCC ID number for your particular device, follow the instructions on the website to view values for either the typical or maximum SAR for that particular device. Additional SAR information can also be obtained at: www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/specificabsorption-rate-sar-cellularDRAFT telephones FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY Health and Safety 43 FCC Part 15 Information and Notices Note: Any device that uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is subject to FCC Part 15. Any device with a power supply is subject to Part 15 which also covers both intentional radiators (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi) and unintentional radiators (such as DRAFT emissions from power supplies FOR and INTERNAL USE ONLY circuit boards).
