1.0Introduction
TheeAR(earwornActivityRecognition)isabioinspireddesignedsensorwhichemulatesthe
functionofthehumanvestibularsystemindetectingbodymovementsandorientations.By
positioningtheeARsensorontheuser’sear,gait,bodypostureandactivityinformationcanbe
capturedbytheminiaturisedsensor.Ithasbeenwidelyappliedandtrialledinsports,wellbeingand
healthcareapplications.
Fromthetrialsconducted,numerousrequestshavebeenreceivedforapplyingtheeARsensorfor
otherapplications,suchaslongtermactivitymonitoringforelderlypatients.Inrespondtothe
potentialdemands,theeARlitesensorhasbeendesignedtargetinglongtermmonitoring
applications.ThisdocumentprovidesthenecessaryinformationfortheCEandFCCcompliance
examinations.
2.0eARlitesensorsystem
TheeARlitesensormainlyconsistsofaneARlitesensorandabasestation.TheearworneARlite
sensorisdesignedtocapturethepostureandactivityoftheuser.Thebasestation,ontheother
hand,issimplyachargingstationandanadaptorforlinkingthesensortoaPC.Figure1depictsthe
sensingsystemdiagram.

2.1eAR(earwornActivityRecognition)litesensor
TheeAR(earwornActivityRecognition)litesensor,asshowninFigure2,isabioinspiredsensor
designedtoemulatethemainfunctionsofthehumanvestibularsystem.Bypositioningthesensor
ontheear,thesensitivesensorcancapturethesimilarinformationasperthehumaninnerear,and
detectthepostureoftheperson.

TheeARsensormainlyconsistsofaMEMSbased3Daccelerometersensor,amicrocontroller,a
radiotransceiverwithUSBinterface,aflashmemoryandarechargeablebattery.TheMEMSbased
3Daccelerometerisamicromechanicalsensorwhichcanmeasuretheaccelerationwithregardto
gravity.Thetypicalsamplingfrequencyis1Hzperaxis.Thesensorisdesignedwithamicrocontroller
whichcanbeprogrammedandconfiguredfordifferentapplications.Thelowpowerradio
transceiver,withmaximumdatarateof2Mbps,enablesrealtimetransmissionofsensordatatoa
receiver,andtheradiotransceiverhasabuiltinUSBinterfacewherethesensorcanplugontoaPC
viathebasestationfordownloadingthesensordata.Theonboardflashmemorycanbeusedto
storesensordata,anditcanstoreupto1weekofrawaccelerometerdata.Withthelowpower
processorandradiotransceiver,theeARlitesensorcanoperatecontinuouslyfor1weekafteritis
fullycharged.Inaddition,toensurereliabilityofthesensor,thesensorisdesignedtobewater
proofedanditcanoperateunderupto1metreofwater.

2.2eARLitebasestation
ThebasestationissimplyanadaptorforconnectingtheeARlitesensortoaPC,anditisadocking
stationforchargingthebatteryoftheeARlitesensor,asshowninFigure3.

ThebasestationisdesignedtoconnecttoaPCoraUSBpoweradaptorwithamicroUSBconnector.
ToeasethedockingoftheeARlitesensorandprovidesecureconnections,permanentmagnetsare
embeddedonthebasestation.WhenaneARlitesensorisdockedontothebasestation,theLEDat
thefrontofthebasestationwilllightupandtheeARsensorwillbedirectlyconnectedtothe
attachedPCviatheconnectingpinsonthebasestation.
