1.0Introduction
Thee‐AR(ear‐wornActivityRecognition)isabio‐inspireddesignedsensorwhichemulatesthe
functionofthehumanvestibularsystemindetectingbodymovementsandorientations.By
positioningthee‐ARsensorontheuser’sear,gait,bodypostureandactivityinformationcanbe
capturedbytheminiaturisedsensor.Ithasbeenwidelyappliedandtrialledinsports,wellbeingand
healthcareapplications.
Fromthetrialsconducted,numerousrequestshavebeenreceivedforapplyingthee‐ARsensorfor
otherapplications,suchaslongtermactivitymonitoringforelderlypatients.Inrespondtothe
potentialdemands,thee‐ARlitesensorhasbeendesignedtargetinglongtermmonitoring
applications.ThisdocumentprovidesthenecessaryinformationfortheCEandFCCcompliance
examinations.
2.0eARlitesensorsystem
Thee‐ARlitesensormainlyconsistsofane‐ARlitesensorandabasestation.Theear‐worne‐ARlite
sensorisdesignedtocapturethepostureandactivityoftheuser.Thebasestation,ontheother
hand,issimplyachargingstationandanadaptorforlinkingthesensortoaPC.Figure1depictsthe
sensingsystemdiagram.

2.1eAR(earwornActivityRecognition)litesensor
Thee‐AR(ear‐wornActivityRecognition)litesensor,asshowninFigure2,isabio‐inspiredsensor
designedtoemulatethemainfunctionsofthehumanvestibularsystem.Bypositioningthesensor
ontheear,thesensitivesensorcancapturethesimilarinformationasperthehumaninnerear,and
detectthepostureoftheperson.

Thee‐ARsensormainlyconsistsofaMEMSbased3Daccelerometersensor,amicrocontroller,a
radiotransceiverwithUSBinterface,aflashmemoryandarechargeablebattery.TheMEMSbased
3Daccelerometerisamicromechanicalsensorwhichcanmeasuretheaccelerationwithregardto
gravity.Thetypicalsamplingfrequencyis1Hzperaxis.Thesensorisdesignedwithamicrocontroller
whichcanbeprogrammedandconfiguredfordifferentapplications.Thelowpowerradio
transceiver,withmaximumdatarateof2Mbps,enablesreal‐timetransmissionofsensordatatoa
receiver,andtheradiotransceiverhasabuilt‐inUSBinterfacewherethesensorcanplugontoaPC
viathebasestationfordownloadingthesensordata.Theon‐boardflashmemorycanbeusedto
storesensordata,anditcanstoreupto1weekofrawaccelerometerdata.Withthelowpower
processorandradiotransceiver,thee‐ARlitesensorcanoperatecontinuouslyfor1weekafteritis
fullycharged.Inaddition,toensurereliabilityofthesensor,thesensorisdesignedtobewater
proofedanditcanoperateunderupto1metreofwater.

2.2eARLitebasestation
Thebasestationissimplyanadaptorforconnectingthee‐ARlitesensortoaPC,anditisadocking
stationforchargingthebatteryofthee‐ARlitesensor,asshowninFigure3.

ThebasestationisdesignedtoconnecttoaPCoraUSBpoweradaptorwithamicroUSBconnector.
Toeasethedockingofthee‐ARlitesensorandprovidesecureconnections,permanentmagnetsare
embeddedonthebasestation.Whenane‐ARlitesensorisdockedontothebasestation,theLEDat
thefrontofthebasestationwilllightupandthee‐ARsensorwillbedirectlyconnectedtothe
attachedPCviatheconnectingpinsonthebasestation.
