MAG2/Grind Resistant (GR) Sensor
The Sensys Networks VDS240 Wireless Vehicle Detection
System useswirelessmagneto-resistivesensorstodetectthe
presenceandmovementofvehicles.Thesensors–installedinholes
coredintheroadwayandcoveredwithepoxy–transmitdetection
datainreal-timevialow-powerradiotechnologytoanearbySensys
Networksaccesspoint.Vehicledetectionsarefurtherrelayedtoa
trafcsignalcontroller,remotetrafcmanagementcenter,orother
system.
The new MAG2/GR sensordevelopedbySensysNetworksutilizes
thenextgenerationofRFchipsetsandcircuitry.TheMAG2sensors
areinstalledushwiththeroadwaysurfaceinplasticshells.The
plasticshellsenabletheremovalandreplacementofsensorsduring
roadwaymillingoperations.TheGRsensorsareinstalledatdepth
ofupto7inchesbelowthetopoftheroadwaysurfacewithout
plasticshells.Sensorsinstalledatthesedepthsdonothavetobe
removedandreplacedduringmostroadwaymillingoperations.
Intypicaltrafcmanagementapplications,asensorisplacedin
themiddleofatrafclanetodetectthepresenceandpassageof
vehicles.Vehiclespeedsandlengtharemeasuredbytwosensors
installedinthesamelanewiththeexactdistancebetweenthem
conguredinsoftware.Therecommendeddistancebetween
sensorsdependsontherangeofexpectedspeedstobemeasured:
fortypicalfreewayapplications,aseparationof20to24feet(6.1
to7.3meters)isrecommended;fortypicalarterialapplications,a
separationof10to12feet(3.1to3.7meters)ispreferred.

Thestate-of-the-artmagneto-resistivesensingdevicesineach
wirelesssensormeasurethex-,y-,andz-axiscomponentsofthe
Earth’smagneticeldata128Hzsamplingrate.Asvehiclescome
withinrange,changesinthex,y,orzaxesofthemeasured
magneticeldbecomeapparent.Whennovehiclesarepresent,
sensorscontinuallymeasurethebackgroundmagneticeldto
estimateareference.Eachsensorautomaticallyself-calibratesto
thelocalenvironment,andtoanylong-termvariationsofthelocal
magneticeld,byallowingthisreferencevaluetochangeovertime.
