Introduction
TheFLEXSI(SensorInterface)isahighlyadaptablewirelesssensorinterfaceforusewiththeFLEX
satellitebasedassettracker.TheFLEXSIiscapableofsupportingvariouscombinationsofanalog,
digital,andintelligentSensorModules.ExamplesofSensorModulesinclude:tanklevelsensors,
pressuretransducers,temperaturesensors,doorintrusionsensors,eventcounters,etc.Inatypical
usagescenariobatterylifecanbeexpectedtomulti‐year.
ThebehavioroftheFLEXSIisalsohighlyconfigurableenablingtheusertomonitorstatusinnearreal
time,toreceivenotificationofanexceptionevent,ortoperformcomplexanalysisinthefieldfor
specificreportingrequirements.Numerexwillworkcloselywiththeendusertoidentifytheproper
SensorModuleandtodevelopthefirmwarerequiredtosupporttherequiredmodeofoperation.
UptofourFLEXSIscanbepairedwithoneFLEX.
Hardware
Enclosure
TheFLEXSIiscontainedwithinanultrasonicallyweldedenvironmentallysealedenclosure.Connections
tosensormodulesaremadebyjoiningtheFLEXSI10pincircularconnectortoasuitablecompanion
connectorontheSensorModulecable.UptofourFLEXSIscanbepairedtoeachSatelliteFLEX.
SensorModules
TheSensorModuleisacriticalcomponentofthesolution.Thecustomershallidentifyameasurement
tobetakenandworkinconjunctionwithNumerextosourceasuitablethirdpartysensor.Thestandard
FLEXSIcanprovideamaximum50milliampsofat3.3VtopowerSensorModules.Thesensorsare
connectedtotheFLEXSIthrougha10pincircularconnector.
Batteries
TheFLEXSIrequirestwo3.6vlithiumthionylchlorideAAbatteries.Thesebatteriesareinstalledinthe
FLEXSIinasealedcompartmentthatisuseraccessible.Theusershallchangethebatteriesinanon
hazardousenvironmenttoreducetheriskofignitingaflammableorexplosiveatmosphere.
Batterylevelmonitoringisconductedandreportedthroughsensormessages.Batteryliferesolutionis
reportedtowithin1%.Duetothenatureofthebatterychemistry,batteryliferemainingcannotbe
directlyinferredfromvoltagereadings.Thereforethevalueiscalculatedbasedoncomponent
measurementsandaggregatedusagetotals.Althoughtheaccuracyshouldbeacceptable,theuser
shouldreplacethebatterieswhenthelevelfallsbelow20%toensureuninterruptedoperation.
Firmware
FirmwareisacriticalcomponentoftheFLEXSI.Customfirmwarewillberequiredforeachapplication
asdefinedbythecustomer.Thoroughsystemtestingshallbeconductedtoensurethefunctionality
deliveredistheexactfunctionalityspecified.

TheFLEXSIutilizesa779to928MHzISMbandtransceiver.Thefrequencyisconfigurabletoallowfor
ISMbandoperationinNorthAmerica,Europe,andotherlocales.Transmitpower,datamodulation,
dataencoding,anddataratesarealsoconfigurabletoallowforreliablecommunicationinnoisy
environments.Itisrecommendedtoperformasitesurveytoidentifypossiblesourcesofinterference
suchthatNumerexcanmakeadjustmentsaccordingly.
EachFLEXSIhasauniquesensoridentificationnumber(SID).TheSIDrangesfrom0to255.TheSID
shallbeincludedintheovertheairmessagetoidentifytheFLEXSIfromwhichthedatatransmission
originated.EachFLEXSIisalsouniquelypairedtoasingleFLEXthroughwhichitshallexclusivelyreport.
InopenairtheFLEXSIcanbeupto50feetfromtheFLEXandmaintainreliablesignaling.Although
greaterdistancescanbeachieved,reliabilityshouldbeassessedbeforefulldeployment.
Datatransmissionthroughvariousmaterialshasbeentestedandthroughputhasbeenshowntobe
reliable.However,whennodirectlineofsiteisavailableitisimportanttotestwirelesssignalreliability.
Aninstallationassessmentkit,consistingofaFLEXwirelessprogrammerandsoftwaretools,isavailable
fromNumerex.
Whenaneventoccursthatrequiresdatatransmission,theFLEXSIsignalstheFLEXtowakeupand
relaystheappropriateinformation.Thisprocesscantakeupto40seconds.Subsequently,theFLEX,if
nothandlingthetransmissionofanotherevent,candelaythemessageupto40minutes.In
applicationswherepromptnessisaconcern,itisrecommendedtominimizethenumberofsensorsand
optimizetheregularreportingoftheFLEXtoensuredeliveryofdataasquickaspossible.Inatypical
applicationdatacanbeexpectedtobedeliveredinlessthan1minute90%ofthetime,within20
minutes95%ofthetime,andwithin40minutes98%ofthetime.
Installation
TherecommendedinstallationmethodistouseVHBtapetosecuretheFLEXSItotheassetbeing
monitored.Ultimately,however,eachinstallationmayrequirespecialmountingandshouldbeproperly
assessedbythecustomer.Installationshouldbedoneinsuchamannertoprovidedirectlineofsight
fromtheFLEXSItotheFLEXatadistancegreaterthan3feetandlessthan50feet.TheFLEXSIshould
bemounted“screwsdown”toavoidattenuatingtheinternalantenna.Aspreviouslymentioned,
installationkitsshouldbeusedtoascertainthewirelesssignalreliabilityoftheinstallationbefore
deployment.
FactoryConfiguration
Foreachcustomerimplementation,Numerexwillloadappropriatefirmware,andconductFLEXSI/FLEX
pairingoperations.Inmostcases,thecustomerwillconnecttheFLEXSIandSensorModulecables(10
pinroundconnector)atfinalinstallation.Dependingonusage,batteriesmaybefactoryinstalledby
Numerexorshallberequiredtobeinstalledonsite.WhenafieldedFLEXistobepairedwithaFLEXSI,

itisrequiredforthecustomertocorrectlyidentifyandprovidetheESNoftheFLEXtowhichtheFLEXSI
shallbepaired.Alternatively,Numerexwillprovideintuitivesoftwareandtherequired10pinUSB
connectortoperformthefieldparing.EachFLEXSIshallbelabeledwithitsSIDandtheESNoftheFLEX
towhichitispaired.
