SlingCatcher allows you to watch digital video on your TV. With the included remote control, you can sit back on your couch and watch video from your Slingbox, or movies and Internet video from your PC. We’ve designed this set up procedure to cover most situations. If you have a more complex home theater system, see the manuals that came with your equipment for set-up information. If you don’t have your manual, many of them are available on the web sites of the manufacturers.1BEFORE YOU BEGIN
TV RouterSlingbox Windows PCFlashlightWHAT YOU NEED TO SETUP SLINGCATCHER:OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT:2• A ashlight to help you see behind your TV.• A TV with composite video, S-video, component video, or HDMI inputs. • A broadband Internet connection (cable or DSL modem) connected to a home network (wired or wireless). Note: For ease-of-use, performance and convenience, Sling Media recommends that you use wired Ethernet or SlingLinkTM TURBO to connect SlingCatcher to your home network. Alternatively, you can use SlingLink WIRELESS. It plugs into a USB port on the back of the SlingCatcher and allows you to connect SlingCatcher to your wireless router. SlingLink TURBO and SlingLink WIRELESS are sold separately. Visit http://www.slingmedia.com/slinglink for more information.One or both of these:• A Slingbox on your home network (LAN) or on the Internet (WAN), if you want to watch video from your Slingbox on your TV.• A Windows PC to run the SlingCatcher Desktop software, if you want to sync or stream video from your PC to the SlingCatcher and watch it on the TV. Note: SlingCatcher requires an optional USB 2.0 storage device (hard disk drive or flash memory stick) to support the sync functionality. 3 STEP 1: INSERT bATTERIES IN ThE REMOTEPlace the batteries in the remote control by removing the rear cover of the remote and inserting the batteries. Use the diagram in the battery compartment to make sure you insert the batteries correctly. Once you’ve installed the batteries properly, the red light will ash when you press the OK button. STEP 3: CONNECT ThE AUdIO CAbLES1. First, choose the device that you want to send sound to. You can set up SlingCatcher to send audio to your TV, your stereo or your A/V receiver. To connect the cables properly, it’s easiest to start by looking at the back of your TV, stereo or A/V receiver.Note: Some TVs have their connections organized into sets of inputs (INPUT 1, INPUT 2 or AUX 1, AUX 2, etc.). If your TV has these, write down the input set that you use. You may need to change the Input source setting on your TV later in this set up procedure.SETTING UP SLINGCATCHER STEP 2: PLACE SLINgCATChER NEAR yOUR TVRemove SlingCatcher from the packaging and place it near your TV. For the remote control to work properly, the entire front of the SlingCatcher should be visible from where you watch TV and it must not be blocked.Do not place your SlingCatcher on or near anything that gets hot, such as a stereo amplifier, spotlight, transformer, radiator, etc. Also, don’t place anything on top of your SlingCatcher.IMPORTANT: Before you plug SlingCatcher into an electrical outlet, read the safety information in the included “SlingCatcher Safety, Regulatory, and Legal Information” booklet. That booklet also includes important safety instructions on cleaning your SlingCatcher.
4TIP: You may need to refer to the manual for your TV, stereo or A/V receiver to see information about the connections. Don’t panic if you don’t have the manual. Many manufacturers have these manuals on their web sites.2. Next, choose a type of audio connection. There are three kinds of audio connections: analog, digital and HDMI (High-Denition Multimedia Interface). Analog provides good sound. Digital or HDMI provide the best sound. Make sure that the device for audio has the kind of available audio connections that you want to use.ANALOG: Analog audio connections are usually red and white. The red connection is for the right channel and white is for the left channel. If you see connectors on your audio source, connect the matching cables to SlingCatcher and then to the INPUT connections on the audio device that you’ve chosen. Often the analog sound cables include a yellow connector for video. Don’t connect this yellow connector at this time.DIGITAL: Digital audio connections are usually orange. These connections are also called S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) or Coaxial S/PDIF. Many manufacturers use these connections. If the audio device for audio that you’ve chosen has a digital audio connection, connect a digital audio cable (not included) to the digital audio connector on SlingCatcher and then to the corresponding INPUT connector on your device. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface): If your TV or A/V receiver has an HDMI connection available, connect the appropriate cable to SlingCatcher and then to your TV. 5Need cables? Visit http://www.slingmedia.com to purchase them. STEP 4: CONNECT ThE VIdEO CAbLES1. Check the available video inputs on your TV. There are four kinds of video connections: composite, S-video, component and HDMI. The video quality of a composite video connection is good, S-video is better, and component is very good. HDMI is best. 2. Choose the highest quality connection that your TV has that’s available.COMPOSITE: Composite connections include the red and white connectors for audio, along with a yellow one for video. If you chose composite video and you see an available yellow composite connection on your TV, connect the appropriate yellow cable.S-VIDEO: S-video connections are typically black with multiple pins. If you chose S-video and you see an available S-video connection, connect the appropriate cable.COMPONENT: Component connections are usually a set of green, blue and red connectors. If you chose component video and you see a set of available connections, connect the appropriate connections.HDMI: HDMI cables carry both audio and video. If you’ve already connected an HDMI cable to your SlingCatcher and to your TV, you’re done. If not, connect the HDMI cable to the back of SlingCatcher and to the HDMI connector on your TV.not includednot included
6 STEP 5: CONNECT SLINgCATChER TO yOUR NETwORkIf you plan to connect your SlingCatcher via Ethernet to your home network, connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet jack on the back of SlingCatcher. Plug the other end into an unused Ethernet port on your router.If your SlingCatcher is not near your router, you can use SlingLinks (not included) to bridge a wired Ethernet connection between SlingCatcher and your router. Visit http://www.slingmedia.com/slinglink for more information.Optionally, for a wireless connection, you can connect the SlingLink WIRELESS accessory (not included) to either USB port on the back of SlingCatcher. For a wireless connection, you also need a wireless router. See the documentation included with SlingLink WIRELESS for information on setting it up to use with SlingCatcher. STEP 6: POwER UP SLINgCATChER1. Connect the power cord to SlingCatcher.WARNING: The SlingCatcher power adapter is only for use with SlingCatcher or Slingbox SOLO. Do not plug the SlingCatcher power adapter into any other Sling Media family of products.2. Plug the power adapter into a power outlet. 3. The Power LED should light up indicating the set-top box is powered on.Power
7 STEP 7: TURN ON yOUR TVWait 1 minute for SlingCatcher and your TV to warm up. If necessary, change your TV video input source setting to match the input that you’ve connected SlingCatcher to. It may not be obvious how to change the input source setting on your TV. Again, you may need to refer to the manual for your TV for information. If you don’t have the manual, many manufacturers also have these manuals on their web sites. After you choose the correct input source setting, a Welcome screen appears. Onscreen instructions will lead you through the step-by-step process for configuring your SlingCatcher.IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE WELCOME SCREEN AT THIS POINT:First, wait at least an additional 30 seconds to make sure that both SlingCatcher and your TV are warmed up. Double-check the Input source setting. If your TV and SlingCatcher are warmed up and you’ve selected the correct Input source setting, it’s possible that your TV is not set to accept the video format being output by SlingCatcher. Press the Enter ( ) button on the SlingCatcher remote control every 5 seconds to change the video format being output by SlingCatcher until you see the SlingCatcher Welcome screen clearly on your TV.If this does not work, see page 11 of this manual for more troubleshooting tips.
8 OPTIONAL STEPS:After you’ve completed the SlingCatcher on-screen setup, you can perform these optional steps:• You can install the SlingCatcher Desktop software on your Windows PC or PCs. This software allows you to view video from your PC on the TV. Visit http://www.slingcatcher.com to download the software and installation instructions. • If you want to sync media content from your PC using the SlingCatcher Desktop software, you can connect a USB 2.0 storage device to the back of SlingCatcher. If you purchased a USB 2.0 hard disk drive or USB 2.0 ash drive accessory from Sling Media, or have your own, install it by connecting it to a USB port on the back of SlingCatcher. SlingCatcher is compatible with most USB 2.0 storage devices. Your device must have at least 1 GB available free space. Devices using USB 1.1 or USB On-the-Go (OTG) are not supported. Your device must also be formatted with the FAT32 file system for use with SlingCatcher. If your device is not formatted correctly, SlingCatcher can format it for you. Before you format the device, make sure that there aren’t files on it that you want to keep. If there are, connect the drive to your PC and copy the files to your PC or another drive before going any further. USINg ThE REMOTE CONTROLYou can use the SlingCatcher remote control to control both SlingCatcher, as well as any Slingboxes that you have access to on your home network or on the Internet. When you’re watching video from a Slingbox, most of the buttons on the SlingCatcher remote will control your cable/satellite set-top box, DVD player, or Slingbox TV tuner. 10SlingCatcher Main Menu• VOL, TV POWER, TV INPUT, and MUTE buttons: These buttons on the remote control can be set to control your television and/or stereo or A/V system. Note that these buttons control your TV, and/or stereo or A/V system, not SlingCatcher. Until they are programmed they do not do anything. Visit http://www.slingcatcher.com for more information.• The Sling button: Press the Sling button ( ) on the remote control to access the main menu shown here. The Arrow buttons: From the main menu, use the arrow buttons on the remote to access the following features:• Up arrow ( ): This button allows you to watch video from a Slingbox on your TV. Your Slingbox can be located on your local network within your home, or on the Internet in a remote location.• Left Arrow ( ): Playback video content that you have synced to the USB hard drive using your PC. • Right Arrow ( ): View video clips of your favorite TV shows and movies from http:///www.sling.com and other popular locations.• Down arrow ( ): Provides access to system settings and preferences.Navigation tips: • Press the OPT ( ) button on the remote for a list of more options.• Press the Back( ) button to go one step or go back to the previous menu.• Press the red button ( ) on the remote control to access on-screen Help.• Press the Sling icon button ( ) on the remote to go back to the main menu.
11Before you do anything else, make sure that all audio, video, and network cables are connected as described in this manual. If the problems continue, look for your symptoms below:No video on your TV 1. Check the TV input source setting if your TV has them. It should be set to the same input that SlingCatcher is connected to. 2. Check the video cables. They should be connected correctly to your TV and to SlingCatcher (See page 5 of this manual). 3. If this is a first setup or installation, SlingCatcher may not be outputting a video format that can be accepted by your TV. Press the enter button every 5 seconds until you see the SlingCatcher Welcome screen clearly on your TV.SlingCatcher does not respond to the remote control 1. Make sure that the batteries in the remote have been inserted correctly. Remove them and check the diagram inside the battery compartment. Reinsert them as shown in the compartment.2. Replace the remote control batteries if the red light on the remote still does not ash when you press the OK button.3. Make sure that the front of the SlingCatcher is not blocked. No audio 1. Make sure that the audio cables are connected correctly to your TV or home theater system and SlingCatcher (See page 3 of this manual). 2. Make sure that your TV or home audio system is turned on and the volume is turned up. (Refer to the user manuals for this equipment for more information. 12Unable to connect to my SlingCatcher from the SlingCatcher Desktop software 1. Make sure that your PC is properly connected to your router. 2. If you are using a wired Ethernet connection, make sure that the Ethernet cable is firmly connected to SlingCatcher and to your router. If you are using a wireless connection, make sure that it’s set up and connected properly.3. Make sure that your network is on. If the network light on the front of SlingCatcher is not lit, go to the SlingCatcher Desktop main menu and press the down arrow button to select Settings. Next, select Networking and Storage to check your network connection.Unable to connect to a Slingbox from SlingCatcher1. Make sure that SlingCatcher is connected to your home network correctly (See the previous section). 2. Make sure that your Slingbox is set up correctly. A Slingbox cannot be set up using SlingCatcher. You must use SlingPlayer (PC or Mac) to set up a Slingbox. Refer to your Slingbox documentation for more details. You can download Slingbox documentation from: http://support.slingmedia.com.Problems installing a USB storage device1. Make sure that your device is USB 2.0 compliant. Devices using USB 1.1 or USB OTG (on-the-go) are not supported. Refer to the user manuals of these devices for more information. These are often available on the manufacturer’s web site. 2. Check your external USB storage device and its cables. Many USB 2.0 drives require a separate external power supply.3. Ensure your USB 2.0 storage device has at a minimum 1GB of storage available.As a last resort:Reset your router and cable or DSL modem by unplugging both units and plugging them in again after waiting 30 seconds. Then, press and hold the Reset button on the back of SlingCatcher for longer than 5 seconds to return it to factory default settings.Network
