Story by Erin Eby

Today is Cubetto’s first day of
school.
To make sure he has everything
ready, he wakes up extra early.
Wheels: check! Backpack:
check! Books: check! He doesn’t
want to forget anything!
A compass is a tool that shows you which
directions are North, South, East, and
West.
Which square on the map do you think
contains a compass?
Start on the compass. Move Cubetto
south one square to the “R”.
At school, Cubetto’s teacher is
Mr. Turtle. Mr. Turtle is famous
for his exciting stories about
history and science.
Today the class will learn all
about different environments.
The environment is the world that
surrounds us. There are many different
types.
What type of environment do you live in?
Using a left turn, head to the yellow
square southeast of the “R”.
In Cubetto’s country, there are
farms, deserts, mountains, and
a deep river. First, they learn
about deserts.
Deserts are very dry and sandy.
The desert reminds Cubetto of
the school’s sandbox.
There are deserts all over the world,
even near the North Pole!
What types of plants and animals might
live in a desert?
Make Cubetto move three squares to
swim across the river. End in the water.
Next they hear all about the
river that runs through their
land. The river brings water and
makes the land fertile for
farming.
Cubetto pictures the tall, green
fields outside of town.
Fertile means the land is a good place to
grow plants to eat. We call these crops.
Can you think of any crops that are
grown for us to eat?
Take Cubetto to the mountains, choose
the path yourself!
11
Water also washes down the
mountains to the farmland.
Mr. Turtle explains that
mountains are formed when
parts of the ground push
against each other and become
scrunched up.
The land on Earth is always moving, but
it’s so slow we can’t feel it.
Can you think of an event when the earth
moves and we can feel it?
From the mountain, head towards the
castle, use one right turn and one left
turn.
13
After lunch Cubetto learns how
people live and move in their
environment.
Long ago they built castles,
forts, and villages. Now there
are large cities, power stations,
and airplanes.
Machines have changed how we live and
made our lives easier.
What types of machines do you think
have made life easier?
Now make a trip to the “B”. If you like,
try using the Function Line.
15
Cubetto’s world feels very big,
but his city is just one of
thousands on Earth. How
different and interesting each
place must be.
He wants to see them all!
There are over 7 billion people on Earth!
If you could take a trip anywhere in the
world, where would you go?
Using a blue block at least once, move
from the “B” to the oak tree. Ask if you
need help.
17
Ding Ding!
The bell signals the end of the
day. Cubetto can’t wait to come
back tomorrow and learn more
interesting and exciting things
about the world around him!
Won’t you join him?

the maps and books visit us at

Can you invent your own challenges for
you and your friends to try?
Take a trip in a square. Come back
home to the tree. Use your function key.
