13US3Perform pairingprocedure on theBluetooth device todetect this unit.The list of detected devicesappears on the display of theBluetooth device. This unit isdisplayed as “DR-BT160AS.”If “DR-BT160AS” is notdisplayed, repeat from step 1.Notes•For details, refer to the operatinginstructions supplied with theBluetooth device.•When pairing with a Bluetoothdevice that cannot display a list ofdetected devices or that has nodisplay, you may pair the device bysetting both this unit and theBluetooth device to pairing mode.At this time, if passcode is setbesides “0000” on the Bluetoothdevice, pairing cannot be done withthis unit.4Select “DR-BT160AS”on the display of theBluetooth device.5If Passcode* input isrequired on the displayof a Bluetooth device,input “0000.”Pairing is complete when theindicator (blue) flashes slowly.The message standing for“Pairing complete” appears onthe display of some Bluetoothdevices.* Passcode may be called “Passkey,”“PIN code,” “PIN number,” or“Password.”6Start the Bluetoothconnection from theBluetooth device.This unit memorizes the deviceas the last connected device.Some Bluetooth devices mayconnect with the unitautomatically when pairing iscomplete.Tips•To pair with other Bluetooth devices,repeat steps 1 to 5 for each device.•To delete all pairing information, see“Initializing the unit” (page 27).

14USWearing the unit1Place the hangers onboth ears.The headset with the POWERbutton is for the right ear.2Adjust the neckbandand the earpiece anglefor a comfortable fit.Adjust the length of theadjustable earpieceshaft.Adjust the angle of theadjustable earpiece shaft so thatthe earpieces fit comfortably inyour ears.How to install the earbudscorrectlyIf the earbuds do not fit your earscorrectly, low-bass sound may notbe heard. To enjoy better soundquality, change the earbuds toanother size, or adjust the earbudsposition to sit on your earscomfortably and fit your earssnugly.The M size earbuds are attached tothe headphones before shipment. Ifyou feel the M size earbuds do notsuit your ears, replace them with thesupplied S or L size earbuds.When you change the earbuds,install them firmly on theheadphones to prevent the earbudsfrom detaching and remaining inyour ear. Rotate the earpieces toensure a secure fit.

The indicator(blue) flashes once.The setting can be released by repeatingthe above procedures. At this time, theindicator (blue) flashes twice.NoteYou cannot adjust the volume of theBluetooth device by pushing the jogswitch of this unit up or down.

In this case, set totalk with the unit by pressing and holdingthe multi function button for about 2seconds, or by operating the Bluetoothmobile phone. 22USCalling while playing back musicThe Bluetooth connection using HFP or HSP as well as A2DP is necessary tomake a call while playing back music.For example, to make a call using a Bluetooth mobile phone while listeningto music on a Bluetooth compatible music player, this unit needs to beconnected to the mobile phone using HFP or HSP.Make a Bluetooth connection between this unit and thedevice in use following the procedures outlined below.1Make a Bluetooth connection between this unit andthe mobile phone in use with HFP or HSP followingthe procedures outlined in “Calling” (see page 19).2Operate the Bluetooth device (music player or mobilephone) used for playing the music to make aBluetooth connection to this unit using A2DP.To receive a call whileplaying back musicWhen an incoming call arrives, themusic pauses and the ring tone isheard from this unit.1Press the multi functionbutton and talk.After finishing the call, press themulti function button. This unitis switched back to musicplayback.When no ring tone is heardeven if an incoming callarrives1Stop music playback.2When ringing, press themulti function buttonand talk.To make a call whileplaying back music1Press the multi functionbutton while playingback music (page 21), oroperate your Bluetoothmobile phone to make atelephone call.If no dial tone is heard on thisunit, press and hold the multifunction button for about 2seconds.

23USOn Bluetooth communication•Bluetooth wireless technology operateswithin a range of about10 meters (about 30 feet).Maximum communication range mayvary depending on obstacles (humanbody, metal, wall, etc.) orelectromagnetic environment.•The antenna is built into the righthousing as illustrated in the dotted line.The sensitivity of the Bluetoothcommunication will improve by placinga connected Bluetooth device on yourright side.The communication distance shortenswhen the obstacles are between theantenna of the connected device andthis unit.•The following conditions may affect thesensitivity of Bluetooth communication.–There is an obstacle such as a humanbody, metal, or wall between this unitand Bluetooth device.–A device using 2.4 GHz frequency,such as a wireless LAN device,cordless telephone, or microwaveoven, is in use near this unit.•Because Bluetooth devices and wirelessLAN (IEEE802.11b/g) use the samefrequency, microwave interference mayoccur and resulting in communicationspeed deterioration, noise, or invalidconnection if this unit is used near awireless LAN device. In such as case,perform the following.–Use this unit at least 10 m (about30 ft) away from the wireless LANdevice.PrecautionsLocation ofbuilt-in antennaADDITIONAL INFORMATIONContinued–If this unit is used within 10 m (about30 ft) of a wireless LAN device, turnoff the wireless LAN device.–Install this unit and Bluetooth deviceas near to each other as possible.•Microwaves emitting from a Bluetoothdevice may affect the operation ofelectronic medical devices. Turn offthis unit and other Bluetooth devices inthe following locations, as it may causean accident.–where inflammable gas is present, ina hospital, train, airplane, or a petrolstation–near automatic doors or a fire alarm•This unit supports security capabilitiesthat comply with the Bluetooth standardto provide a secure connection when theBluetooth wireless technology is used,but security may not be enoughdepending on the setting. Be carefulwhen communicating using Bluetoothwireless technology.•We do not take any responsibility forthe leakage of information duringBluetooth communication.•Connection with all Bluetooth devicescannot be guaranteed.–A device featuring Bluetooth functionis required to conform to theBluetooth standard specified byBluetooth SIG, Inc. and beauthenticated.–Even if the connected deviceconforms to the above mentionedBluetooth standard, some devicesmay not be connected or workcorrectly, depending on the featuresor specifications of the device.–While talking on the phone handsfree, noise may occur, depending onthe device or communicationenvironment.•Depending on the device to beconnected, it may require some time tostart communication.

24USOn splash proof structureThis unit has splash proof structurewhich prevents the function of theunit from being affected by splashof water (except for earpiece andAC power adaptor).However, this unit cannot be used inwater. Take the followingprecautions.•Do not put this unit in water oruse it in a place with highhumidity such as bathroom.•In the event water is spilled on theearpiece, wipe off the water witha dry cloth, etc. to dry theearpiece before using this unit.On the supplied AC poweradaptor•Use the AC power adaptor suppliedwith this unit. Do not use any other ACpower adaptor since it may cause theunit to malfunction.Polarity of the plug•If you are not going to use this unit fora long time, unplug the AC poweradaptor from the AC outlet. To removethe AC power adaptor from the walloutlet, grasp the adaptor plug itself;never pull the cord.Note on static electricityIn particularly dry air conditions, mildtingling may be felt on your ears. This is aresult of static electricity accumulated inthe body, and not a malfunction of theheadphones.The effect can be minimized by wearingclothes made from natural materials.Others•Do not place this unit in a placeexposed to humidity, dust, soot orsteam, subject to direct sunlight, or in acar waiting at a traffic signal. It maycause a malfunction.•Using the Bluetooth device may notfunction on mobile phones, dependingon radio wave conditions and locationwhere the equipment is being used.•If you experience discomfort after usingthe Bluetooth device, stop using theBluetooth device immediately. Shouldany problem persist, consult yournearest Sony dealer.•Listening with this unit at high volumemay affect your hearing. For trafficsafety, do not use this unit while drivingor cycling.•Do not put weight or pressure on thisunit as it may cause the unit to deformduring long storage.•The ear pads may deteriorate due tolong-term storage or use.•If you have any questions or problemsconcerning this unit that are not coveredin this manual, please consult yournearest Sony dealer.
