32GlossaryAccess pointA networking device with both wirelesscommunication interface and telephoneline or Ethernet interface, which bridgesacross the wireless LAN and wired LAN.Ad hoc demo modeA transmission method for devicesequipped with a wireless LAN card (forexample, a PC and AIBO), which doesnot require the access point. In ad hocdemo mode, you must specify wirelesschannel and WEP key for both AIBO anda personal computer. When you selectad hoc demo mode, you cannot specifySSID.DHCP (Dynamic HostConfiguration Protocol) serverWhen you construct a network usingTCP/IP, an IP address must be specifiedfor all the devices within the network. When a DHCP server is included withinthe network, it assigns an IP addressautomatically for all devices. The accesspoint or Windows NT/2000 server canserve as the DHCP server.IBSS (Independent Basic ServiceSet) Peer-to-Peer modeWhen you set at least one PC within thewireless LAN network to IBSS Peer-to-Peer mode, all devices within thenetwork can communicate with eachother without the need of an access point. The only difference between IBSS Peer-to-Peer mode and ad hoc demo mode isthat SSID can be specified for the IBSSPeer-to-Peer mode while it cannot bespecified for the ad hoc demo mode. When there is no access point within thenetwork, at least one personal computermust be set to IBBS Peer-to-Peer modeand the rest of the personal computer andthe wired LAN devices must be set toinfrastructure mode.IEEE802.11bA standard for wireless LAN networkwhich uses the 2.4 GHz band forcommunication. Maximum transmissionrate is 11 Mbps. This LAN cardconforms to IEEE802.11b.
33Infrastructure modeAlso referred to as “Access point mode.”This mode is used when a deviceequipped with a wireless LAN cardcommunicates with the access point. Inthis mode, the wireless channel specifiedby the access point is used forcommunication. For AIBO, you mustspecify SSID and WEP key whichmatches those on the access point.IP addressNumber used for identifying the devicewithin the TCP/IP network. An IPaddress consists of four numbers each ofwhich is from 0 to 255.Example: 192.168.1.110.0.1.1LAN (Local Area network)A relatively small network usuallyconstructed using the Ethernet, withtransmission rate from 10Mbps to100Mbps. When an access point is used,a wireless LAN and wired LAN can beconnected.SSID (Service Set ID)Also referred to as “access point ID” or“group name.” The SSID is specifiedthrough the access point or the personalcomputer which is set to IBSS Peer-to-Peer mode, and is used forcommunication within wireless LANnetwork as the network name. The SSID can be entered using up to 32alphanumeric characters.Subnet maskAn IP address consists of four numberseach of which is from 0 to 255 (see IPaddress). For more efficient operation,an IP address is divided into twocomponents: network component andhost component. The subnet mask is thevalue set for dividing the IP address intothe network segment and host segment. In subnet mask, the digits specified as“1” (in binary code) determines networkcomponent.Example: The network component andhost component of the device whose IPaddress is 192.168.1.1 when the subnetmask is 255.255.255.0192.168. 1: network component1: host component
TCP/IP (Transmission ControlProtocol/Internet Protocol)A protocol which the personal computerwithin the network uses forcommunication. TCP/IP is used inInternet and is used the most world wide. This LAN card uses TCP/IP forcommunication. In order tocommunicate using TCP/IP, a devicerequires the IP address which works asID number.WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)WEP encrypts data transmit through thewireless LAN to prevent tapping ofinformation. To activate WEP, characters to be used asthe key for encrypting the data beingtransmit using the wireless LAN must bespecified. Input five alphanumericcharacters.Wireless channelIn IEEE802.11b wireless LAN standard,2.4 GHz band is divided into 14channels. To prevent a transmission jam, separate channels can be specified fordifferent wireless networks which areclose to each other. This LAN card canuse channels 1 to 11. In infrastructuremode, a channel specified by the accesspoint is used by all the devices within thenetwork. In ad hoc mode, the channelmust be specified by all the deviceswithin the network.34
