Euro model_END Ergonomic ConsiderationsYou will be using your computer as a portable device in a variety of environments. Whenever possible, you should attempt to take account of the following ergonomic considerations for both stationary and portable environments:❑Position of your computer – Place the computer directly in front of you (1). Keep your forearms horizontal (2), with your wrists in a neutral, comfortable position (3) while using the keyboard, touch pad, or external mouse. Let your upper arms hang naturally at your sides. Take frequent breaks while using your computer. Excessive use of the computer may strain eyes, muscles, or tendons.
16nNBefore Use❑Furniture and posture – Sit in a chair with good back support. Adjust the level of the chair so your feet are flat on the floor. A footrest may make you more comfortable. Sit in a relaxed, upright posture and avoid slouching forward or leaning far backwards.❑Viewing angle of the computer's display – Use the display's tilting feature to find the best position. You can reduce eye strain and muscle fatigue by adjusting the tilt of the display to the proper position. Adjust the brightness level of the display as well.❑Lighting – Choose a location where windows and lights do not cause glare and reflection on the display. Use indirect lighting to avoid bright spots on the display. Proper lighting adds to your comfort and work efficiency. ❑Positioning an external display – When using an external display, set the display at a comfortable viewing distance. Make sure the display screen is at eye level or slightly lower when you are sitting in front of the monitor.

25nNGetting Started✍To disconnect your computer completely from AC power, unplug the AC adapter.Make sure that the AC outlet is easily accessible.If you do not intend to use your computer for a long period of time, place the computer into Hibernate mode. See Using Hibernate Mode (page 105). This power saving mode saves the time of shutting down and resuming. For safety reasons this computer only functions with genuine Sony battery packs designed for this model. If an unauthorized battery pack is installed, the battery will not be charged and the computer will not function.Euro model_ENDGVD model_BGN!For your safety, it is highly recommended that you use genuine Sony rechargeable battery packs and AC adapters that meet the quality assurance standards and supplied by Sony for your VAIO computer. 28nNGetting StartedTo charge the battery pack1Install the battery pack.2Connect the AC adapter to the computer.The charge indicator light turns on while the battery pack is charging. When the battery pack charges close to the maximum charge level you selected with the battery charge functions, the charge indicator turns off. To select your desired maximum charge level, see Using the Battery Charge Functions (page 29).!Charge the battery pack as described in this manual from your first battery charge.✍Keep the battery pack in your computer while it is directly connected to AC power. The battery pack continues to charge while you are using the computer.If the battery charge level falls below 10%, you should either connect the AC adapter to recharge the battery pack or shut down your computer and install a fully charged battery pack.Your computer is supplied with a lithium ion battery pack and can be recharged any time. Charging a partially discharged battery pack does not affect the life of battery.Charge indicator status MeaningLit in orange The battery pack is charging.Blinks along with the green power indicatorThe battery pack is running out of power. 29nNGetting StartedChina model_BGNIRX-4300_BGNBy default, your computer enters Sleep mode automatically after about 30 minutes of inactivity when running on AC power. Press any key to bring it back into Normal mode. When running on battery power, it switches the power saving mode automatically from Sleep mode to Hibernate mode if the computer is not used for a certain period of time. To bring it back from Hibernate mode to Normal mode, press the power button.IRX-4300_ENDChina model_ENDWhile some software applications or peripheral devices are in use, your computer may not enter Hibernate mode even when the remaining battery life is short. To avoid loss of data when using battery power, you should save your data frequently and manually activate a power management mode, such as Sleep or Hibernate.If the battery pack wears out when the computer enters Sleep mode, you will lose all unsaved data. Going back to the previous work state is impossible. To avoid loss of data, you should save your data frequently.When your computer is directly connected to AC power and has a battery pack installed, it uses power from the AC outlet. Using the Battery Charge FunctionsYou can select the battery charging method for your battery pack with the Battery Charge Functions. First, make sure the USB cable is properly connected to the USB port. If you need to secure the connection, wait a few moments for the computer to recognize the drive. If the icon still does not appear, follow these steps:1Close all programs that are accessing the floppy disk drive.2Wait for the indicator light on the floppy disk drive to turn off.3Push the eject button to remove the disk, and disconnect the USB floppy disk drive from your computer.4Reconnect the floppy disk drive by plugging the USB cable into the USB port.5Restart the computer by clicking Start, the arrow next to the Lock button, and Restart. Memory CardWhat should I do if I cannot find any memory card icons in the Computer window?❑The Memory Stick Duo icon and the SD / MMC icon are not present in the Computer window before you insert either of the media. Insert a Memory Stick or a memory card. Both icons will appear in the window. Although the drive letter assignment varies depending on your hardware configuration, the preceding letter is always assigned to the Memory Stick drive.❑When you insert a Memory Stick or a memory card for the first time of the day, it will take some time before the icons appear in the Computer window. What should I do if I cannot use Memory Stick formatted on a VAIO computer on other devices?You may need to reformat your Memory Stick.Formatting Memory Stick erases all data, including music data previously saved on it. Make sure the erasure prevention switch is off.  PeripheralsWhat should I do if I cannot connect a USB device?❑If applicable, check the USB device is turned on and using its own power supply. For example, if you are using a digital camera, check if the battery is charged. If you are using a printer, check if the power cable is connected properly to the AC outlet.❑Try using another USB port on your computer. The driver could be installed to the specific port you used the first time you connected the device.❑See the manual that came with your USB device for more information. You may need to install software before you connect the device.❑Try connecting a simple, low-powered device such as a mouse to test if the port is working at all.❑USB hubs may prevent a device from working because of a power distribution failure.
